Celebrating 25 years since their founding, CHUCK OWEN & The JAZZ SURGE will perform at the USF Concert Hall on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 7:30pm. This remarkable 19-piece jazz orchestra, with seven Grammy nominations, will be presented by the USF School of Music and the Tampa Jazz Club in a program that is the culmination of USF’s Inaugural Jazz Alumni Weekend. 

Now designated a Distinguished Professor at USF, Chuck Owen designed the school’s Jazz Studies program, which was soon known internationally for its stellar faculty, accomplished graduates, and outstanding ensembles. In 1995, Owen founded the Jazz Surge, which has played his groundbreaking music through a series of six CD’s, including 2018’s “Whispers on the Wind,” which alone received Grammy nominations in four categories, including Best Large Jazz Ensemble Recording. Over the years, The Jazz Surge has also worked with Chick Corea, Gerald Wilson, Bob Brookmeyer, and many other jazz greats. 

The weekend of March 13-14 will be a reunion for students of the past four decades in the USF jazz program, filled with concerts, jams, and social events. The Jazz Surge concert that will conclude the Alumni Weekend will be the band’s first Tampa appearance since 2017, when they played the same beautiful USF Concert Hall for the International Association of Jazz Composers and Arrangers.
