Beachtone Jazz Festival at the Adrienne Arsht Center Saturday, June 15, 2019 Presents Top Jazz, Latin Jazz and Brazilian Artists

BEACHTONE JAZZ FESTIVAL:
THE ULTIMATE JAZZ
EXPERIENCE
Uniting the top Jazz, Latin Jazz
and Brazilian artists of our time!

ELIANE ELIAS
YAMANDU COSTA
SAMMY FIGUEROA
w/ special guests
Chico Pinheiro & Mirella Costa

The Beachtone Jazz Festival celebrates its Miami debut on June 15th 2019 with one of the most prestigious musical events of the year at Miami’s premier concert venue, the Knight Concert Hall at the Adrienne Arsht Center.  The Beachtone Festival is presenting three of the music world’s most exciting artists: multiple GRAMMY® winner Brazilian jazz artist Eliane Elias, the fabulous guitar virtuoso Yamandu Costa and double GRAMMY® nominee and legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa with two very special guests: GRAMMY® winning Brazilian guitarist Chico Pinheiro and LATIN GRAMMY® Cultural Foundation Award winner Brazilian singer Mirella Costa. This unprecedented roster captures the essence of Miami’s cultural medley while presenting world-class international artists.

Brazilian pianist/vocalist Eliane Elias is known for her distinctive and immediately recognizable musical style which blends her Brazilian roots and her sensuous, alluring voice with her virtuosic piano playing.  This multiple GRAMMY® Award winning artist has sold over 2.2 million albums during the span of her career and has over 30 million digital streams on Spotify alone.  In addition to her nine Grammy nominations her album “Made In Brazil” won the Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album, followed by ‘Dance of Time” which won a Latin Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album.  Her next album, a set of romantic classics recorded in Brazil and at London’s Abbey Road, is due for release in September 2019.

The incredible guitar virtuoso Yamandu Costa is generally considered to be today’s foremost player of the Brazilian seven-stringed guitar.   Although he is rooted in the Brazilian guitar tradition his music knows no borders and integrates everything from tango to jazz to classical.  Alone on the stage, he invokes an ecstatic audience response with his spectacular, awe-inspiring musicianship.  Well-known to Brazilian audiences, he has toured throughout the world, playing in over fifty countries, with a growing fame in the United States as audiences begin to discover this phenomenal Brazilian artist.

Miami audiences need no introduction to multiple GRAMMY® nominated percussionist Sammy Figueroa.  After a long and successful career as a sideman in New York, playing with everyone from Miles Davis to Mariah Carey to David Bowie, Sammy moved to South Florida and discovered a wealth of great musicians from all over the world.  Forming his own band, the Latin Jazz Explosion, Sammy never looked back.  Sammy and the Explosion have received two GRAMMY® nominations for Best Latin Jazz Album and have toured throughout the world.  Along with his Venezuelan musical directors Silvano Monasterios and Gabriel Vivas, Sammy’s shows display awe-inspiring virtuosity and musical excitement.  Joining Sammy will be acclaimed Brazilian jazz guitarist and GRAMMY® winner Chico Pinheiro and young Brazilian singer, Mirella Costa, winner of the LATIN GRAMMY®Cultural Foundation Award and a recent graduate from Berklee School of Music.

The Beachtone Jazz Festival is the inspiration of Fernando Cutait, a Sao Paolo-based producer with a deep love of jazz.   A musician himself and a graduate of Berklee School of Music, he says “It’s been my dream to present a jazz festival in Miami for over six years.  One day I woke up and said to myself that the time has come.” Cutait is planning to create a base in Miami, with the Beachtone Festival just  the first of many productions.

The Beachtone Jazz Festival welcomes music lovers and jazz fans of all ages to enjoy this unprecedented musical experience!  Ticket prices range from $55 to $135 and can be found at the Arsht Center box office or the Arsht Center’s website.

The Knight Concert Hall at the Arsht Center offers premium seating, dining options, a full bar, valet parking, ADA accessible accommodations and convenient digital ticketing on their website.

SJO’s monthly concert series at Miami Shores Country Club welcomes back popular Latin Jazz band ORIENTE! Led by Cuban band leader, guitarist and songwriter Eddy Balzola, ORIENTE's syncopated rhythms are spicy and colorful while enhancing ORIENTE's creative signature style ~ tropical yet bluesy and soulful, drenched with melody and harmony. ORIENTE debuted in 1993 in New Orleans’ French Quarter at the famed Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro. Those audiences connected deeply with the band’s original Afro-Cuban roots, Jazz and Blues style, and they were invited back to the club and city many times over the years. Although the group has gone through slight stylistic changes over the years as members and instrumentation evolve, Balzola's multi-cultural roots are always prevalent. ORIENTE has played from Key West and the Southwest U.S. to the Caribbean and Europe. Some highlights include appearing at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, New Orleans and JVC Jazz Fest., and D.O.D. tours. The band has also been featured on the PBS International Travel show “Music Voyager” which is seen worldwide, and on the Food Network “Live with Chef Bobby Flay”. They've been recording their 6th record planned for release this summer, but Balzola says some of the new music may be ready to showcase on the 26th. The concert will include recording and band mates Yoel Del Sol (percussion), Dony Felix (bass), Rey Monroig (drums), plus special guest Jesse Jones, Jr. on sax and flute. There will also be appearances by Yamin Mustafa on trumpet, and newcomer Livan M. sharing vocals, creating opportunities for lots of musical surprises!

Join us for a great evening of jazz, rhythm & soul! Sunday, May 26th, 6pm-9pm at Miami Shores Country Club, 10000 Biscayne Blvd., Miami Shores, FL 33138. Gen Adm $25 | SJO Members $20. Marty Stokes
"Down On My Knees"
USEPPA Records
By Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro © June 2018

"Down On My Knees" is Marty Stokes' fourth release and the third that we here at Mary4Music have had the pleasure of working with. Also, since Marty is a fellow Floridian, I've also had the pleasure of seeing him and his band perform on many occasions. Florida, being the blues hotbed that it is, has more festivals, clubs, juke joints and tiki bars than one can count, and Marty's pretty much played them all - and more than once at that. Things like that don't happen by accident.

The Marty Stokes Band consists of: Marty on vocals and rhythm, lead, slide and acoustic guitars; Jennifer Mazziotti on saxophone; Daryl Best on bass; and Rick Whiteman on drums. Special guests include: John McLane on B3; Summer Mendez Kilgore on vocals; and JP Soars on guitar and cigar box guitar. "Down On My Knees" contains thirteen tracks of which eleven are Marty Stokes originals.

Being one of my favorite guitar players in the genre, as soon as I read in the credits that JP Soars was featured on "Do You No Harm" I knew it would be one I'd love and would ultimately mention. That said, just like Frazier and Ali, Marty was right there going toe to toe with him.

So if you're going to do a song about a powerful hurricane, it had better have a powerful force behind it. On this absolutely flawless rendition of Albert Castiglia's "Hurricane Blues", Darryl on bass and Rick - with a chest thumpin' drum lead, saw to it that there indeed was. That, along with Jen's fierce sax leads and Marty's frantically paced slide guitar licks, created a sense of urgency.....it was time to batten down the hatches.

For so many reasons, "Stop" (Lonnie Brooks) is my favorite track of the lot. Right off the bat, Marty's slow, scorching, note bending guitar intro immediately told me that this one was going to be some pure, straight up, unadulterated and smokin' slow blues. Then Marty starts belting out some of his best soulful and emotional vocals and just as I'm thinking "whoa", Summer takes over and that angelic voice of hers just stopped me in my tracks. That's when I decided to sit back, put the head phones on, start the song over and just lose myself in it.....three or four times over. Now as good as I just made that all sound, it couldn't have happened without some monster rhythm going on and Darryl, Rick, Jennifer and John were all over that. Off the top of my head, I don't seem to recall how Lonnie's original version of this song went, but I honestly believe I may have just heard the best rendition ever recorded. Those few replays were unquestionably the best 20-25 minutes of music I've heard all week...and maybe even longer.

Inasmuch as the subject on "Whiskey Drinkin' Woman" is obviously a woman intoxicated by whiskey, take it from me, it will be the guitar work on this one that'll intoxicate you. With a very rich bass line pushing it, Marty and JP are killing it. From the plain old rhythm chords - and there's really nothing plain about them at all; to the scorching solo swaps; to the crazy amount of sound JP gets out of that two string cigar box; to Marty's skillful slide; - this is one is all about the guitars.

Like women, men appreciate being told they are loved as well. It doesn't need to be said often but it does need to be said from the heart. Here, listen to how Marty likes to hear it.....

"Tell me that you love me,
and not just like some old friend.
Tell me that you love me baby,
and not just like some old friend.
You don't have to tell me every day,
I just want to hear it 'Every Now And Then.'"

This is another one of my favorite situations where one of the best slow blues songs on the disc is also the longest song on the disc, it's like doubling my listening pleasure. For the better part of seven minutes you'll hear Darryl, Rick and John locked into just the perfect rhythm groove this type of song calls for; Jennifer crushing it on slow, sultry sax leads; and Marty - dare I say on disc's best - putting on a ninety second guitar solo that could hold up against any I've ever heard. Killer stuff!

The disc closes with "Pack Two Bags (Reprise)." It's a minute-and-a-half instrumental continuation of the non-instrumental track with the same title. The song coming to an abrupt end, just as it was peaking, caused my jaw to drop. I was thinking WTF, did my speakers break? If this was Marty's way of leaving the listener wanting more - IT WORKED! It's an all out power trio type thing with Marty, Rick and Darryl lust laying it all out. Phew!

Other tracks on "Down On My Knees" include: "Back Trackin'," the title track "Down On My Knees," "Pack Two Bags," "Pick Up The Phone," "Inside The Bottle," "I Found A Love," and "It Ain't About You."

For a lot more about Marty Stokes, - www.martystokesband.com - is the place to go. Once you do, as always, please tell him his friend the Blewzzman sent you.
