Monday Night Jazz, February 25

The Monday Night Jazz Series at USF continues in February with a return visit by composer MARK TAYLOR, a Guest Faculty Artist this semester, leading the USF Jazz Ensemble. Acclaimed trumpeter MARVIN STAMM, who like Taylor spent his early years with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, will be featured soloist. This evening of big band jazz takes place in the USF Concert Hall at 7:30 on February 25, presented by the USF School of Music and the Tampa Jazz Club.

Mark Taylor had a remarkable career with the US Army Band (Pershing’s Own) and the Army Blues, where he was Chief Arranger for 24 years. Prior to the Army, he wrote for Stan Kenton, who recorded many of his pieces and gave him his start in music publishing. Taylor has become one of the most highly published jazz composers, influencing thousands of young musicians along the way. He has recently released ‘To the Edge,’ with his Washington, D.C.-based big band.
Marvin Stamm’s roots also include Kenton, with whom he recorded five albums, before working with Woody Herman, Frank Sinatra, and Benny Goodman, and many years as one of the most sought-after New York studio musicians. In addition to a busy touring schedule, Stamm maintains an active involvement in jazz education as mentor and clinician.

Members of the USF Jazz Ensemble, the premiere jazz orchestra at USF, look forward to welcoming you to their performance with these two outstanding veterans of big band jazz!
