The award-winning Frost Concert Jazz Band is renowned for its outstanding musicianship, inspired performances, soloists, and well-crafted original arrangements. Under the direction of Dr. John Daversa, the large jazz ensemble continues its storied history into a new era. The ensemble has won countless Downbeat Student Music Awards throughout its history, including “Outstanding Performance” and “Best Graduate Large Ensemble”. Most recently, Frost CJB was awarded 1st place in the College Big Band Division at the 2014 and 2016 Next Generation Jazz Festivals and subsequently invited to perform at Monterey Jazz Festival in Monterey, CA. December 2017, Frost CJB is partnering with ArtistShare/BFM Jazz to release the album Europa, featuring large jazz ensemble works influenced by European composers. The band has numerous tours, recordings and prestigious collaborations to its credit. Recent guest artists include: Ignacio Berroa, David Binney, Terence Blanchard, Ronnie Cuber, Jon Faddis, Alan Ferber, Jimmy Heath, Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Vince Mendoza, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Maria Schneider.

The Frost School of Music’s John Daversa, who believes changing immigration policy is more important than winning awards, shared his deeply personal and timely message on music’s biggest stage when his ode to dreamers garnered three Grammy Awards.

Featuring 53 talented, young, undocumented immigrants from 17 countries who now live in immigration limbo, Daversa’s “American Dreamers: Voices of Hope, Music of Freedom,” won in every category for which it was nominated: Best Large Jazz Ensemble, Best Instrumental Arrangement (on “Stars and Stripes Forever”) and Best Improvised Jazz Solo (on “Don’t Fence Me In”).

The chair of the Department of Studio Music and Jazz, Daversa was inspired to use music to humanize the stories—and showcase the talents—of so-called dreamers after the Trump administration’s 2017 decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program that allowed about 800,000 young adults brought to the U.S. by undocumented parents to remain in the only country most know as home.

On each of his three trips to the Grammy stage, Daversa—a composer, arranger, master trumpeter, and big band leader—made sure to share stories of some of the “amazing, courageous human beings” who appear on the American Dreamers CD, and were sitting in the audience.

At the age of twelve, Renee Olstead signed to Warner Brothers Records and completed two albums produced by 16-time Grammy winning producer David Foster. Renee has appeared and performed her music on The Today Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Oprah Winfrey Show. She's performed at the "Live 8" concert in Berlin along with other performers such as Paul McCartney, Madonna and Sting and completed extensive international touring. Renee's debut album received a Grammy nomination for Best Arrangement "Summertime" and a Golden Globe nod for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture "Christmas in Love". Renee has also received many honors for her philanthropic efforts, such as the Big Brothers Big Sisters "Rising Star Award", PETA2's "Sexiest Celeb Vegetarian", and PETA's Libby Award.
