Tampa Jazz Club - Celebrating 60 Years of "Kind of Blue" January 13, 2019

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF “KIND OF BLUE”

The Miles Davis Classic, Performed by an
All-Star Band, January 13 in Ybor City

It’s a celebration of a true jazz masterpiece, “Kind of Blue,” performed by all-star Florida musicians, at the next Tampa Jazz Club concert on Sunday, January 13, at 3:00 in the Mainstage Theatre at HCC/Ybor City. 2019 will mark the 60th anniversary of the Miles Davis classic, one of the most influential of all albums and one that has held a unique place in the hearts of jazz listeners since it was first heard in 1959. These Sunday afternoon concerts are part of HCC’s Visual & Performing Arts Series.

The Kind of Blue Tribute Band includes JAMES SUGGS, trumpet; JACK WILKINS, tenor saxophone; VALERIE GILLESPIE, alto saxophone; PER DANIELSSON, piano; MARK NEUENSCHWANDER, bass; and WALT HUBBARD, drums. All are favorites of Tampa Jazz Club audiences, though appearing for the first time together as a sextet. (And as it happens, each of the band’s three horn players has done a tribute at the Mainstage Theater in past years to the artist they represent from the original Kind of Blue: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Cannonball Adderley.) In addition to the iconic tunes ‘So What’ and ‘All Blues,’ listeners can expect other gems played by Miles’ band in that era, including ‘Milestones’ and ‘Straight, No Chaser.’

Though it influenced generations, no other record sounds quite like what Miles and his band gave the world in 1959. Come and celebrate the timeless appeal of Kind of Blue with this remarkable sextet, in the lovely and intimate Mainstage Theatre.
