NCFBS - Doing it AGAIN w/
THREE Great Bands in
ONE SHOW!

Friday, March 5, 2019 ~ Doors 6pm, Show 7pm
619 South Main Street
Gainesville, FL 32601

Vanessa Collier is a soulful singer, talented multi-instrumentalist best known for her saxophone playing, a true rising star in the Blues, and good enough to be called “amazing” by the legendary Buddy Guy. She is a five-time Blues Music Award nominee, including two nominations this year, Contemporary Blues Female Artist – (alongside Samantha Fish, Danielle Nicole, Shemekia Copeland, and Beth Hart) and Instrumentalist: Horn.

A 2013 graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, she’s toured nationally and internationally, and received notice for her vocals, searing saxophone, and witty songwriting. Vanessa is blazing a trail, racking up an impressive arsenal of honors, and has already singled herself out as an artist of distinction and one we would all do well to watch.

Midwest Record exclaimed, “This bluesy singing sax player knows how to bring the slinking funk to her captivating, award winning sound that has echoes in young Bonnie Raitt/Maria Muldaur vocal sounds…Killer stuff on every level, this sounds like one of the reasons you first became a music fan. Killer stuff.”

“I love connecting with an audience and feeling their energy and I hope to inspire people to follow their dreams and passions, to find what brings them joy, and then to pursue it doggedly,” Collier said. “I love performing and I love connecting with people. And it’s driven me to what I do now.”

If you haven’t been fortunate enough to meet Vanessa and witness one of her head-turning, fiery, and passionate performances, you should definitely make sure you do.

Little Mike & the Tornadoes is well-known for its flawless, high-energy blues sound, modeled after the great Chicago bands of the ‘50s. Little Mike, is a mean harmonica player who cut his teeth in New York City in the late 1970s and early 1980s, backing up legendary Bluesmen Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, and Jimmy Rogers. Blues Blast magazine called them “old-school Blues delivered the right way by folks who feel it down to the core.”

Inspired by classic and electric Blues, the Gainesville-based Bridget Kelly Band has placed their unique stamp on the Blues genre, with high-energy live performances and a hybrid sound that mixes Texas and Memphis Blues with various southern Blues traditions. The powerful and sultry vocals of singer Bridget Kelly along with the incendiary lead guitar work of Tim Fik forge a signature hybrid sound that combines female urban Blues with riff-driven rockin’ Blues guitar. Also boasting a rock-solid rhythm section, their star continues to shine and rise.

Sunshine Jazz Concert Series March Concert Highlights Jazz Talent of Miami

Sunshine Jazz Concert Series
Presents
The Neil Bacher Quintet

Sunday, March 24, 2019 ~ 6-9PM

March salutes Women around the world and Human Rights and we are pleased to present The Neil Bacher Quintet. Bandleader/Guitarist Bacher will feature South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame Inductee Dolph Castellano on Piano, with Neil’s long-time collaborator Bassist Peter Bockius, newcomer Victor Sanchez on Drums, and vocalist Von Henry!

Miami bred musician, Neil Bacher began playing Jazz guitar professionally at 17. During his career he has accompanied Ira Sullivan, Dolph and Tony Castellano, Stan Getz, Elvin Jones, Bobby Mover, Alice Day, Sandy Patton and many others. He’s toured the world and spent a decade playing and teaching in Europe at which time he performed extensively with bassist Peter Bockius. Bacher returned in 2000 and is currently professor for Jazz Guitar, Jazz Guitar Ensembles, and Jazz Combos at Palm Beach State College, and performs with his own quartet.

Bassist Peter Bockius was born in 1941 in Freiburg Germany and completed his studies at their Classical Conservatory.  Peter looks back at a career as a freelance musician and sideman for a long list of greats including: Archie Shepp, Kenny Wheeler, Benny Golson, Wolfgang Engstfeld, Buddy Tate, Harry Edison, Michal Urbaniak, Birelli Lagrene, Kai Winding and Neil Bacher.

Dolph Castellano was born in Brooklyn, NY and eventually made Fort Lauderdale home. Trained as a classical pianist he soon began to tune his ear to the rhythms and syncopation of the jazz sound. Playing in big bands with Charlie Spivak and Woody Herman, Dolph developed his own memorable, melodic flavor. He’s performed with Jazz stars including: Woody Herman, Jimmy Dorsey, Ira Sullivan, Pete Minger, Chubby & Duffy Jackson, played with Dizzy Gillespie on his 60th birthday, and with Lou Donaldson, Donald Byrd and many others including beloved twin brother, pianist Tony. He was pianist in residence for the "Boca" and Palm Beach Pops Symphonic Orchestras.

Von Henry is a South Florida native who was introduced to music by parents who always had Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald on the phonograph. Always amazed when people compare her to “Sarah” or “Ella”, Von has been singing professionally for 15 years or so, performing around town at Taste of the Grove, Luna Star Café, John Martin’s Irish Pub, and recently with her Jazz Trio at the Betsy Hotel on South Beach.

Victor Luis Sanchez is Miami born and raised. He is currently pursuing his degree at the FIU School of Music and is studying under Master drummer and composer Rodolfo Zuniga. He performs regularly around town.

Join us on Sunday, March 24th from 6:00pm-9:00pm at Miami Shores Country Club, 10000 Biscayne Blvd., Miami Shores, FL 33138. General Admission is $25| SJO Members $20. The critics and cognoscenti agree: jazz guitarist Nate Najar’s virtuosity
exudes a dynamic and truly intoxicating elegance. His artistry evokes
a modern and progressive attitude that perpetuates the legacy of the
great Charlie Byrd. But while Najar’s imaginative playing is steeped in
Byrd’s tradition it nevertheless emulates a collection of other artistic
musical influences, including classical, bebop, fusion, bossa nova and
even post modern, which have all culminated to inspire a player whose
sophisticated and often innovative artistry has placed him in many of
the world’s most prestigious music venues and produced many superb
recordings.
