Celebrate the Season and JAZZ w/ Alice Day in December in Sunshine Jazz Concert Series in Miami

Sunshine Jazz Concert Series
Presents the
Annual Holiday Jazz Celebration!

Sunday, December 23, 2018 ~ 6-9PM

As we count down the final days of the year, we really have much to be thankful for. We celebrated SJO’s 32nd anniversary, and our monthly Jazz concerts and community presentations have been overflowing with amazing talent and devoted patrons. New members continue to discover the SJO and our attendance continues to grow as promotions and word of mouth spread throughout the region. For this very special occasion we are honored to feature an artist who has been so instrumental to the development and integrity of The Sunshine Jazz Organization -  SJO’s beloved founding board member, Ms. Alice Day!

Affectionately known as “The First Lady”, Alice Day was born in Miami, into the extraordinary musical tradition of gospel. Alice has committed her life to music, drawing inspiration from greats such as Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Mahalia Jackson. She has created her own distinctive style and is acknowledged as one of the finest jazz vocalists performing today.  Jazz Entrepreneur, Frank Spena once said of her, “Alice Day is a Renaissance Woman. She has the ability to mesmerize and captivate an audience with her stage presence.  Whether singing a ballad, or a raucous, belting blues, there ain’t nobody that does it better.” Ms. Day has been honored with numerous awards and is the founder and director of the South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame, in its 10th year.

Our annual holiday celebration will take place in the ballroom at Miami Shores Country Club where Alice Day will be accompanied by her superb “Friends” - pianist Brian Murphy, bassist Sam Chiodo and James Cotmon on drums, as well as appearances by special VIP musical guests TBA!.

Please join us for a festive, fabulous evening of Jazz and good cheer as we end the year in style. Sunday, December 23, 2018, from 6pm-9pm at Miami Shores Country Club, 10000 Biscayne Blvd., Miami Shores, FL 33138. General Admission is $25/SJO Members $20. Become an SJO member or renew at the door and your admission is FREE!  MSCC features a full dinner menu, table service and ample free parking. Reserve your seats at SunJazzOrg@aol.com, (954)554-1800. “Based on the musical vocabulary and innovations of its forebears, jazz is always evolving and we have put this season together to feature a dazzling array of modern jazz in all its iterations,” said South Florida JAZZ President Ronald B. Weber, M.D.  “From veteran stars, such as Randy Brecker and John Scofield, to established, but still rising stars Donny McCaslin and Stefon Harris and international sensation Lionel Loueke, our 2019 season is a snapshot of where jazz is today and the artists that are creating its future.”

“We are excited to present the evolution of the “South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall” concert series and to welcome these acclaimed artists to our stage,” said Dr. Dan Barnard, associate dean of cultural affairs and director of Bailey Hall.

Here are brief sketches of the artists that will appear in
2019’s South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall:

Friday, January 18, 2019 ~ 8pm
RANDY BRECKER QUINTET
Jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker was born in Philadelphia to a musical family that included his brother Michael, a remarkably influential tenor saxophone innovator. until his death from leukemia in 2007, that stunned the jazz world. The brothers had created individually successful careers, but they shared a very special bond, often working together from 1975 on, as the Brecker Brothers Band, which garnered five GRAMMY Awards with their final two recordings. Randy is a supremely gifted player who adds a solid dimension to every musical situation and configuration. He is most comfortable in his own band, a hard-swinging quintet with Randy’s wife, Ada Rovatti, sharing the frontline. The group often gives more than a nod to the treasured Brecker Brothers.

Saturday, February 16, 2019 ~ 8pm
DONNY McCASLIN QUARTET
Three-time GRAMMY® nominee Donny McCaslin is the leading saxophonist, composer, and musical pioneer of his generation, receiving wide commercial and critical acclaim in jazz, and even rock and electronica circles alike. McCaslin attended Berklee College of Music, where in his senior year he would join NEA Jazz Master Gary Burton’s quintet. Moving to New York in 1991, he quickly made a name for himself as a first-call soloist and touring musician. Named “one of the hottest jazz tickets in the world” for 2017-18, the Donny McCaslin Group has performed over 80 shows on 5 continents each of the past two seasons in support of his hit recording, Beyond Now. He has a GRAMMY® for his appearance on David Bowie’s “Black Star” album.

Saturday, March 16, 2019 ~ 8pm
JOHN SCOFIELD QUARTET
John Scofield is one of the most influential and innovative guitarists of his generation. He has spent the last 40+ years blazing a trail through the post-fusion wilderness, bringing his singular voice to a variety of different projects. His hallmark is his masterful improvising, and his music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk-edged jazz, and R&B. The Gary Burton and Miles Davis stints were pivotal in his career. Along the way he has garnered nine nominations and three GRAMMY Awards. Scofield has led his own bands with a variety of flavors, including jam bands. He arrives in South Florida with a straightahead jazz configuration of piano, bass and joined-at-the-hip drummer Bill Stewart.

Saturday, April 20, 2019 ~ 8pm
Stefon Harris & Blackout
Passionate artistry and astonishing virtuosity have propelled mallet player, Stefon Harris, to the forefront of the invigorated jazz scene. He has been heralded as one of the most important artists in jazz. In addition to his four GRAMMY® nominations, has been named Best Mallet player by the Jazz Journalists Association. He also has fared extremely well in the polls that have been dominated reflexively for so long by now-retired Gary Burton. Educator, musician and entrepreneur, Stefon Harris receive the 2018 Doris Duke Artist Awards. His talent has propelled him for performances around the world. Now with his pet project Blackout, the band that will appear at South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall, we hear what has been percolating in the souls of Stefon and bandmates for more than 14 years. And it is impressive.

Saturday, May 18, 2019 ~ 8pm
KURT ELLING QUINTET
Chicago native Kurt Elling is the greatest male jazz singer – or just jazz singer – of our time. In a career spanning 23 years, Elling has risen to international prominence as a jazz artist and creative singer. An intellectual superman, he is a master of “vocalese” and scatting, having been influenced by singer Mark Murphy, trumpeter Chet Baker, and poet Jack Kerouac. Remarkably, each of his twelve albums was nominated for a GRAMMY® Award and Dedicated to You won in 2010 and a 13th nomination in 2017 for Upward Spiral with Branford Marsalis. He is a perennial critics poll-winner and his quintet tours the world. This will be Mr. Elling’s sixth performance for South Florida JAZZ. His last appearance in South Florida was a collaboration with saxophonist Branford Marsalis with whom he was awarded another GRAMMY® for Upward Spiral. In addition, Kurt, bright, inquisitive and eloquent, is an especially gifted writer, both of lyrics and prose.

Saturday, June 15, 2019 ~ 8pm
“AN EVENING WITH RAUL MIDÓN AND
THE LIONEL LOUEKE TRIO”
The genre-bending icons join forces to present a special night of song and guitar wizardry as they perform sets of original material in an evening that will culminate in an unforgettable jam backed by Loueke's dynamic trio. Raul Midón delivers a signature combination of silky tenor voice and percussive guitar style that is a syncopated, flamenco- and jazz-infused wonder.

From the small West African nation of Benin, Lionel Loueke has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past ten years since he was picked, in 2008 and 2009, as top “Rising Star” guitarist in DownBeat magazine's annual Critics Poll, appearing on Herbie Hancock’s double- GRAMMY-winning album, The Joni Letters. He combines harmonic sophistication, soaring melody and a deep knowledge of African music to create a warm and evocative personal sound.

Funding for South Florida JAZZ is provided in part by grant from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division.

“'Hard To Love' is a  colorful musical tapestry woven by a consummate artist
out of the warp and wool of jazz, soul and blues. Parker's passionate vocals
deliver what might be one of the best albums of the year so far.”
— Henry L. Carrigan, Living Blues
The New Holiday Single Release
What the blues media is saying:

“Joyann Parker presents a package of originals and serves notice that she’s a blues performer to the bone. Bravely risking emotional exposure, this Minneapolis- based singer and multi-instrumentalist shows a penchant for depicting a unique response to the ups and downs of life. The album sweeps through well-titled numbers like “Envy,” “Evil Hearted,” and “Take My Heart And Run.” Parker and company work styles ranging from Chuck Berry and bluesy funk to French Quarter parades and Memphis soul approximations.”
— Frank-John Hadley, DownBeat Magazine

“...Some of the smokiest, smokingest green eyed soul you are going to encounter. Killer stuff throughout.”
— Chris Spector, Midwest Record

“Joyann Parker is the real deal...a powerful vocalist, an accomplished musician on both guitar and piano, and the writer of songs that hold up over time. This is blues and deep southern soul of the highest order. Joyann Parker is a 21st century blues woman.”
— Bill Wilson, Reflections In Blue

“ (Hard To Love) showcases her as a singing, songwriting, guitar-playing, self-producing, self-aware powerhouse, but the driving force is unquestionably her voice — a formidable instrument she wields with soul and taste.”
— Pasadena Weekly

“There’s some serious singing and musicianship afoot here...She’s got the pipes and comes across honestly and passionately…on firmly planted ground singing the smoldering, slow-burning Stax-like ballads.”
— Jim Hynes, Elmore Magazine

CALENDAR OF EVENTS!

An explosive celebration of melody, rhythm and soul, ORIENTE
was formed in the ‘90s by Cuban guitarist and composer Eddy
Balzola. They debuted at New Orleans’ premier jazz club,
Snug Harbor, to an audience accustomed to very funky,
progressive music and Oriente's hard-driving yet melodic
Afro-Cuban roots innovations hit the spot. That raw and
organic music scene was an inspiration and continues to
influence the band’s soulful sound & style, distinguishing
ORIENTE from any other Latin Jazz group.

The band’s 5 th recording, “Soul En Clave”, was just released
with much critical response. The six selections are a mix of
original compositions and dedications, including the stand-out,
4-part suite titled “ECHOES OF TRANE TRACKS”. The cut
pays homage to Coltrane by opening with a chanting
Afro-Cuban guaguanco, followed by his brilliant and beautiful
composition Naima, flowing into Balzola’s powerful spoken-
word poem, and ending with an Equinox finale.

Meet the Band:
Eddy Balzola | Bandleader, Guitar/Vocals
Dony Felix | Bass
Yoel Del Sol | Percussion
Rey Monroig | Drums
Stuart King | Trumpet

World Renowned R&B and Soul Singer Patti LaBelle in Concert in Ft. Myers Feb 11, 2019

PATTI LABELLE
IN CONCERT IN FORT MYERS
at
Barbara B. Mann
Performing Arts Hall
at FSW!

Patti LaBelle to perform at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW on Monday, February 11 at 7:30PM. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office, online at www.bbmannpah.com or call 239-481-4849. The Fort Myers concert is part of the Bank of America Variety Series.

LaBelle began her career in the early 1960s as lead singer and front woman of the vocal group, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. Following the group's name change to Labelle in the early 1970s, they released the iconic disco song "Lady Marmalade" and the group later became the first African-American vocal group to land the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

After the group split in 1976, LaBelle began a successful solo career, starting with her critically acclaimed debut album, which included the career-defining song, "You Are My Friend". LaBelle became a mainstream solo star in 1984 following the success of the singles, "If Only You Knew", "New Attitude" and "Stir It Up", with the latter two crossing over to pop audiences and becoming radio staples. Less than two years later, in 1986, LaBelle scored with the number-one album, Winner in You and the number-one duet single, "On My Own", with Michael McDonald. LaBelle eventually won a 1992 Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her 1991 album, Burnin', followed by a second Grammy win for the live album, Live! One Night Only.

Her 1990s albums, Burnin', Gems (1994) and Flame (1997), continued her popularity with young R&B audiences throughout the decade. Following the release of two mildly receptive solo albums in the early new millennium, she reunited with her Labelle band mates for the album, Back to Now, followed by a briefly well received promotional tour. LaBelle's success has extended as an actress with a notable role in the film, A Soldier's Story, and in TV shows such as A Different World and American Horror Story: Freak Show. In 1992, LaBelle starred in her own TV sitcom, Out All Night. A decade later, LaBelle hosted her own lifestyle TV show, Living It Up with Patti LaBelle on TV One. In 2015, LaBelle took part in the dance competition, Dancing with the Stars.

In a career that has spanned fifty years, she has sold more than 50 million records worldwide. LaBelle has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame. In 2005, the World Music Awards recognized her years in the music business by awarding her the Legend Award. LaBelle was included in Rolling Stone on their list of 100 Greatest Singers. LaBelle is commonly identified as the "Godmother of Soul". LaBelle is a dramatic soprano and is noted for her vocal power, range and emotive delivery. She also has a cake named "Patti LaBelle's Fancy Cake".
