Jazz Roots at Arsht Center in Miami Opens w/ Superstar Talent Tribute to Leonard Bernstein

LEONARD BERNSTEIN 100 AND BEYOND
 November 9, 2018 at 8 p.m.
Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra celebrate America’s
 greatest cultural superstar.

The 11th anniversary season of JAZZ ROOTS begins with a centennial celebration of America’s greatest and most loved classical music superstar, Leonard Bernstein. A genre-busting genius who composed symphonic, keyboard, musical theater and ballet masterpieces; conducted the world’s greatest orchestras; recorded dozens of best-selling, GRAMMY®-winning albums and nurtured the love of classical music in millions of Americans through his groundbreaking television specials, Bernstein has been honored and celebrated this year by arts organizations, festivals and venues throughout the world. The JAZZ ROOTS concert will feature some of the 20th century’s most iconic music reinterpreted and re-imagined for today. The evening will include performances by Grammy Award winner Jon Secada, vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway, saxophonist Kirk Whalum, The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and others.

With a career spanning over two decades, three GRAMMY® Awards, 20 million albums sold in English and Spanish, and starring roles on Broadway, JON SECADA is one of the first bilingual artists to have international crossover success. With a soulful, romantic voice, he is recognized as an international superstar by both fans and peers alike. Beyond his own hits, Secada is widely recognized for his impeccable producing and songwriting skills, collaborating with Gloria Estefan and creating countless popular songs for superstars such as Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. Secada is also widely recognized for his philanthropic activism, assisting various charitable groups all over the world through his personal organization, Jon Secada Charities, and in 2016 he was named Humanitarian of the Year by The Muhammad Ali Foundation. ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY is one of the leading champions of the great American Songbook, having made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer. Her unique singing style blends jazz and traditional pop, making her a mainstay in concert halls, theaters and jazz clubs as well as in the recording studio, on television, and in film. Callaway is a Platinum Award-winning writer whose songs are featured on seven Barbra Streisand CDs. The only composer to have collaborated with Cole Porter, she has also written songs with Carole King, Rolf Lovland and Barbara Carroll to name a few.

Soulful, passionate, stirring...these are the words most often used to describe the music of KIRK WHALUM. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene, his big, rich tenor saxophone sound is unmistakable. Whalum is the recipient of three Dove Award nominations, an NAACP Image Award nomination and two Stellar Awards - gospel music’s highest honor. A 12-time GRAMMY® nominee, Kirk won his first Grammy in 2011 for Best Gospel Song “It’s What I Do” featuring Lalah Hathaway. For decades he has been an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbra Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and most notably, Whitney Houston. It’s his sax heard on her mega-hit, “I Will Always Love You.”

UM’s Frost School of Music HENRY MANCINI INSTITUTE ORCHESTRA is a highly-acclaimed ensemble comprised of a full orchestra (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion), plus a full jazz band (saxophones, trombones, trumpets), rhythm section instruments (piano, guitar, bass, drums) and world percussion.

Tampa Jazz Club Presents the Sensationally Talented Trumpeter Terell Stafford Nov 5, 2018

Terell Stafford w/
USF Jazz Ensemble I

Sensational Trumpeter TERELL STAFFORD at USF’s Monday Night Jazz, November 5 in USF Concert Hall

The next concert in the USF Monday Night Jazz Series will feature one of today’s premiere players, trumpeter Terell Stafford, with the school’s top-flight jazz orchestra, Jazz Ensemble I, on November 5. Now in its 22nd season, this series is presented in the USF Concert Hall, sponsored by the USF School of Music and the Tampa Jazz Club.

Terell Stafford, originally trained as a classical trumpeter, has been called by the legendary McCoy Tyner “one of the greatest players of our time.” In addition to his own recordings, Stafford has performed in the bands of his mentors including Tyner, Benny Golson, Frank Wess, and many others. And he’s been featured for years as a member of the Clayton Brothers and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, in residence at New York’s Village Vanguard.

Stafford is also a prominent figure in jazz education. A former faculty member at The Julliard School and Jazz at Lincoln Center, he is now Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University.

This concert is the second of five in the series, which began with an outstanding evening of Ellington featuring bassist John Lamb and USF Faculty artists. Three more exciting programs are planned for early 2019, with information and tickets at www.tampajazzclub.com. And the students in Jazz Ensemble I look forward to sharing the stage with one of today’s jazz masters, Terell Stafford, on November 5!

The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, located in West Palm Beach, Florida, is one of the premier performing arts centers in the Southeast with a growing national and international reputation. True to the spirit in which it was created, the Center is expanding programming by initiating projects on local, national and international levels. The world-class Kravis Center opened fully funded, with a total construction cost of $100 million, of which a remarkable $49 million came from private individuals and corporations. The Kravis Center is a success story that provides communities worldwide with an example of a thriving performing arts center and a major community and economic catalyst. Set on 10.6 acres of property at the highest point in the city, the Kravis Center includes four venues -- the 2,195-seat Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. Concert Hall, the flexible 289-seat Rinker Playhouse, the 170-seat Helen K. Persson Hall and the outdoor Michael and Andrew Gosman Amphitheatre with a capacity for 1,400 patrons. The Center’s Cohen Pavilion houses the Weiner Banquet Center, The Picower Foundation Arts Education Center and The Elmore Family Business Center for the Arts, along with a five-level parking garage.

After celebrating our 22nd season the number of events hosted annually has grown to more than 800, with attendance of more than 500,000 patrons. Many regionally based arts organizations call the Kravis Center their home including Miami City Ballet, Palm Beach Opera, and the Palm Beach Pops. During the 2013-2014 season, the Kravis Center itself will present more than 350 performances featuring acclaimed artists from every discipline. Established as a leading force in the social fabric of the community, its many outreach programs are as broad and varied as the community itself. To date, the Center has opened the door to the performing arts for more than 1.7 million school children as well as thousands of economically disadvantaged senior citizens, minorities and community groups.
