In the past year, she has toured 11 different countries and as a Berklee College of Music grad, she commands a stage with the old soul presence of a veteran punctuated by the vibrancy of a young woman under 30. Her debut album “Heart Soul & Saxophone” was declared “magnificent” on Dan Aykroyd’s blues radio show winning her accolades as the Best of 2014 Blues Breaker. Her 2017 sophomore release, Meeting My Shadow, has garnered many prestigious awards and honors, including 2018 Blues Music Award (BMA) nominations for Instrumentalist-Horn Player of the Year and Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year.

Saturday, December 1, 2018 ~ 8pm
Nick Schnebelen
Nick Schnebelen has quickly built a reputation as killer lead guitar player and impassioned vocalist. As founding member of the award winning popular family band Trampled Under Foot ( TUF), Nick has traveled the world playing festivals such as Notodden, Montreal, and as fan favorites on the annual Legendary Blues Cruise. Today Nick performs with his own band, as does his sister Danielle Nicole and brother Chris. The siblings still perform a few re-union shows as Trampled Under Foot. Now, Nick Schnebelen continues to tour world-wide, bringing his raw blues energy guitar and vocals, backed by a hot rock n blues band.

Friday, January 11, 2019 ~ 8pm
Jarekus Singleton
At just 30 years old, Jarekus Singleton is a musical trailblazer with a bold vision for the future of the blues. Springing from the same Mississippi soil as Charley Patton, Muddy Waters and B.B. King, Singleton’s cutting-edge sound—equally rooted in rap, rock and blues traditions—is all his own. He melds hip-hop wordplay, rock energy and R&B grooves with contemporary and traditional blues, turning audiences of all ages into devoted fans. With his untamed guitar licks and strong, soulful voice effortlessly moving from ferocious and funky to slow and steamy to smoking hot, Singleton is a fresh, electrifying bluesman bursting at the seams with talent.

Saturday, February 2, 2019 ~ 8pm
Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials
In Chicago, a city overflowing with unrivaled blues talent, world-renowned Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials have been standing tall for almost 30 years. The band’s big sound, fueled by Lil’ Ed’s gloriously rollicking slide work and deep blues string bending, along with his rough-edged, soulful vocals, is as real and hard-hitting as Chicago blues gets. The Chicago Sun-Times says, “Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials are the hottest purveyors of bottleneck boogie to come out of Chicago since Hound Dog Taylor.” Lil’ Ed Williams comes to the blues naturally. His uncle, Chicago slide guitar king and master songwriter J.B. Hutto, taught him how to feel, not just play the blues. Nine albums and thousands of performances later, Lil’ Ed is now universally hailed as a giant of the genre. Lil' Ed and The Blues Imperials—bassist (and Ed’s half-brother) James “Pookie” Young, guitarist Mike Garrett and drummer Kelly Littleton—have remained together for nearly 30 years (an extraordinary feat for any group), the band fueling Ed’s songs with their rock-solid, road-tested, telepathic musicianship. The Big Sound Of Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials is the musically electrifying, emotionally intense and downright fun new album from the band Guitar Player calls “a snarling boogie-blues machine...they blow down the walls.” The CD features Lil’ Ed’s incendiary playing and playful, passionate singing, with the ragged-but-right Blues Imperials cooking like mad alongside him. Produced by Williams and Alligator president Bruce Iglauer, it is a tour-de-force of authentic, deeply rooted Chicago blues. Williams wrote or co-wrote all but two of album’s 14 songs, the other gems written by Uncle J.B.

Friday, March 22, 2019 ~ 8pm
CeCe Teneal & Soul Kamotion
Critics and fans have called CeCe Teneal “a musical force to be reckoned with”, and her achievements in the industry over the past decade are certainly testament to that view. A country girl blessed with a powerful voice that is filled with soul and resonance, CeCe began as a cover artist and is now planning to captivate the globe by performing her own original music that aligns with a blues/soul/funk soundtrack. Born in Osteen, just outside of Orlando, Florida, CeCe never envisioned herself as a performer. Having inherited her voice from her mother, she was handed a microphone in the family church at the age of six and stunned people with her chillingly beautiful vocals. At first keeping her talent within the walls of her home, CeCe quickly felt something bigger beginning to emerge. God had a different plan from what she had first imagined, and after singing at venues throughout her region, her career skyrocketed when she was selected as the lead singer for B.B. King’s Blues Club in Orlando in 2007. CeCe succeeded in transforming B.B. King’s into the most frequented live music venue in Orlando, and in 2011 she released her debut blues album, “Train from Osteen”, performing to sold out crowds and eventually being dubbed the “Voice of Neo-Blues.”

Saturday, April 20, 2019 ~ 8pm
Ed Calle
2015 Latin Grammy Award Winner for Best Instrumental Album and 5X Grammy nominee - Dr. Ed Calle. Around the globe, Calle is a renowned musician, composer, orchestrator, scholar, professor, and leader. Throughout his legendary career, Calle has become one of the most recorded saxophonists in history appearing on more than 1,200 albums, almost 9,000 singles, and countless television and movie soundtracks with artists ranging from Frank Sinatra and Celia Cruz to Sylvester Stallone and Andy Garcia.

“Based on the musical vocabulary and innovations of its forebears, jazz is always evolving and we have put this season together to feature a dazzling array of modern jazz in all its iterations,” said South Florida JAZZ President Ronald B. Weber, M.D.  “From veteran stars, such as Randy Brecker and John Scofield, to established, but still rising stars Donny McCaslin and Stefon Harris and international sensation Lionel Loueke, our 2019 season is a snapshot of where jazz is today and the artists that are creating its future.”

“We are excited to present the evolution of the “South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall” concert series and to welcome these acclaimed artists to our stage,” said Dr. Dan Barnard, associate dean of cultural affairs and director of Bailey Hall.

Here are brief sketches of the artists that will appear in
2019’s South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall:

Friday, January 18, 2019 ~ 8pm
RANDY BRECKER QUINTET
Jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker was born in Philadelphia to a musical family that included his brother Michael, a remarkably influential tenor saxophone innovator. until his death from leukemia in 2007, that stunned the jazz world. The brothers had created individually successful careers, but they shared a very special bond, often working together from 1975 on, as the Brecker Brothers Band, which garnered five GRAMMY Awards with their final two recordings. Randy is a supremely gifted player who adds a solid dimension to every musical situation and configuration. He is most comfortable in his own band, a hard-swinging quintet with Randy’s wife, Ada Rovatti, sharing the frontline. The group often gives more than a nod to the treasured Brecker Brothers.

Saturday, February 16, 2019 ~ 8pm
DONNY McCASLIN QUARTET
Three-time GRAMMY® nominee Donny McCaslin is the leading saxophonist, composer, and musical pioneer of his generation, receiving wide commercial and critical acclaim in jazz, and even rock and electronica circles alike. McCaslin attended Berklee College of Music, where in his senior year he would join NEA Jazz Master Gary Burton’s quintet. Moving to New York in 1991, he quickly made a name for himself as a first-call soloist and touring musician. Named “one of the hottest jazz tickets in the world” for 2017-18, the Donny McCaslin Group has performed over 80 shows on 5 continents each of the past two seasons in support of his hit recording, Beyond Now. He has a GRAMMY® for his appearance on David Bowie’s “Black Star” album.

Saturday, March 16, 2019 ~ 8pm
JOHN SCOFIELD QUARTET
John Scofield is one of the most influential and innovative guitarists of his generation. He has spent the last 40+ years blazing a trail through the post-fusion wilderness, bringing his singular voice to a variety of different projects. His hallmark is his masterful improvising, and his music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk-edged jazz, and R&B. The Gary Burton and Miles Davis stints were pivotal in his career. Along the way he has garnered nine nominations and three GRAMMY Awards. Scofield has led his own bands with a variety of flavors, including jam bands. He arrives in South Florida with a straightahead jazz configuration of piano, bass and joined-at-the-hip drummer Bill Stewart.

Saturday, April 20, 2019 ~ 8pm
Stefon Harris & Blackout
Passionate artistry and astonishing virtuosity have propelled mallet player, Stefon Harris, to the forefront of the invigorated jazz scene. He has been heralded as one of the most important artists in jazz. In addition to his four GRAMMY® nominations, has been named Best Mallet player by the Jazz Journalists Association. He also has fared extremely well in the polls that have been dominated reflexively for so long by now-retired Gary Burton. Educator, musician and entrepreneur, Stefon Harris receive the 2018 Doris Duke Artist Awards. His talent has propelled him for performances around the world. Now with his pet project Blackout, the band that will appear at South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall, we hear what has been percolating in the souls of Stefon and bandmates for more than 14 years. And it is impressive.

Saturday, May 18, 2019 ~ 8pm
KURT ELLING QUINTET
Chicago native Kurt Elling is the greatest male jazz singer – or just jazz singer – of our time. In a career spanning 23 years, Elling has risen to international prominence as a jazz artist and creative singer. An intellectual superman, he is a master of “vocalese” and scatting, having been influenced by singer Mark Murphy, trumpeter Chet Baker, and poet Jack Kerouac. Remarkably, each of his twelve albums was nominated for a GRAMMY® Award and Dedicated to You won in 2010 and a 13th nomination in 2017 for Upward Spiral with Branford Marsalis. He is a perennial critics poll-winner and his quintet tours the world. This will be Mr. Elling’s sixth performance for South Florida JAZZ. His last appearance in South Florida was a collaboration with saxophonist Branford Marsalis with whom he was awarded another GRAMMY® for Upward Spiral. In addition, Kurt, bright, inquisitive and eloquent, is an especially gifted writer, both of lyrics and prose.

Saturday, June 15, 2019 ~ 8pm
“AN EVENING WITH RAUL MIDÓN AND
THE LIONEL LOUEKE TRIO”
The genre-bending icons join forces to present a special night of song and guitar wizardry as they perform sets of original material in an evening that will culminate in an unforgettable jam backed by Loueke's dynamic trio. Raul Midón delivers a signature combination of silky tenor voice and percussive guitar style that is a syncopated, flamenco- and jazz-infused wonder.

From the small West African nation of Benin, Lionel Loueke has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past ten years since he was picked, in 2008 and 2009, as top “Rising Star” guitarist in DownBeat magazine's annual Critics Poll, appearing on Herbie Hancock’s double- GRAMMY-winning album, The Joni Letters. He combines harmonic sophistication, soaring melody and a deep knowledge of African music to create a warm and evocative personal sound.

Funding for South Florida JAZZ is provided in part by grant from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division.

Tampa Jazz Club Presents John Lamb & The USF Faculty Jazz Ensemble in Tribute to Duke Ellington

Coming Soon, Don't Miss it!
View this email in your browser

USF’s Monday Night Jazz Season Opens with

"Duke’s In Town"

Featuring Ellington Bassist JOHN LAMB,
on October 1

The USF School of Music and the Tampa Jazz Club announce the new season of USF’s Monday Night Jazz, a series of performances by prominent jazz artists with USF faculty and student ensembles, presented continuously since 1996. The monthly programs in the USF Concert Hall will begin with an evening of Duke Ellington’s music, featuring the remarkable bassist from the Ellington Orchestra in the 1960s, John Lamb.

Throughout its history, Monday Night Jazz has not only brought top-flight performances to area audiences, but enriched the USF experience with clinics and master classes by the visiting artists. “Our students get to interact with great jazz artists every month,” said USF Jazz Studies Director Jack Wilkins. “At many schools, they don’t have that opportunity.”

The season opener, on October 1, is a celebration of Duke Ellington’s music, featuring JOHN LAMB and the USF FACULTY JAZZ ENSEMBLE. Bassist John Lamb, with a big, soulful sound, perfect time, and a commanding stage presence, is a Bay Area treasure. As Duke Ellington’s bassist, he toured the world and appeared on historic recordings including "The Far East Suite."

He maintains a busy performance schedule after decades as a music educator, and a few years ago traveled to Toronto to record "Conversations – North of the Border," which includes his composition, "Duke’s In Town." Lamb brings a singular insight into the incomparable music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. The USF Faculty Jazz Ensemble features saxophonist JACK WILKINS, trumpeter JAMES SUGGS, trombonist TOM BRANTLEY, pianist CHRIS ROTTMAYER, guitarist LaRue Nickelson and drummer RIC CRAIG.
