Richie Cole “Alto Madness” is a living legend! Richie started playing alto saxophone
when he was ten. His professional career began in 1969 when he joined the Buddy
Rich Big Band. And after stints with the Lionel Hampton Big Band and the Doc
Severinsen Big Band, Cole formed his own quintet and toured worldwide, doing
a great deal to popularize bebop and his own “Alto Madness” style in the 70’s
and early 80’s. Cole has performed and recorded with the great vocalese artists
and notably performed at the Village Vanguard and Carnegie Hall as well
as giving a command performance for the Queen of England. Cole has recorded
over 50 albums and CDs, including his top hit album “Hollywood Madness”
(1979 Muse Records) and his tribute album to Leonard Bernstein, “Richie Cole
Plays West Side Story” (1997 Music Masters Jazz). A prolific composer, Cole
also finds time to arrange for full big bands, symphony orchestras and
frequent performances at jazz festivals worldwide. Moreover, he enjoys
sharing his love of music with younger generations and is active recording,
touring and presenting university master classes.

We are so very excited to meet each of you as we

Tampa Jazz Club Opens Florida's Jazz Society Season w/ THOMAS CARABASI’S NEW STANDARDS QUINTET August 26, 2018!

This Sunday!

TAMPA JAZZ CLUB OPENS NEW SEASON WITH THE "NEW STANDARDS QUINTET"

Thomas Carabasi’s band is a
Bay Area All-Star Ensemble

The Tampa Jazz Club is proud to announce the opening concert of a new season at The Mainstage Theatre, at HCC/Ybor City, featuring THOMAS CARABASI’S NEW STANDARDS QUINTET. This exciting band takes the stage on Sunday, August 26, at 3:00 pm.

Thomas Carabasi is a dynamic drummer and bandleader who has shared the stage with many leading jazz artists, including working closely with legendary pianists Manfredo Fest and Kenny Drew, Jr. (In addition, he is a noted photographer, on the faculty of the Ringling College of Art and Design for more than 25 years.)

The New Standards Quintet plays a mix of jazz classics with a contemporary twist, along with lesser-known material by great Jazz and Brazilian composers (think Mingus, Jobim, and Pharoah Sanders, for starters). And what a stellar lineup! Joining Carabasi in the rhythm section are two members of La Lucha, pianist John O’Leary and bassist Alejandro Arenas; and the band is fronted by Bay Area favorites with a lot of shared history, trumpeter James Suggs and saxophonist Jeremy Carter.

This Quintet, all busy artists with a shared devotion to the new band’s concept, have made a big impression on audiences in St. Petersburg and Sarasota in their original performances. Don’t miss their Tampa debut, and the beginning of a new season of Sunday afternoon jazz in Ybor City!
