Pre-Valentine’s Day Concert Features Jazz, Romance & Chocolate February 9, 2018 in Miami Florida

 Valentine’s program of award-winning
singers performing jazz renditions of
romantic songs of the 1920 to 1940’s.
Gerardo Jose Ortega
A group of stellar singers best known for their work in opera, pop and off Broadway will don their jazz personas when step up to the microphone for “Midnight Radio,” a program of timeless classics.

The concert will be held Friday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the United First Methodist Church of Miami.

“I’m a classical singer who grew up in New Orleans and my first musical memory is from the classic jazz set,” says Geraldo José Ortega, the concert’s organizer, who is usually found on the opera and theater stage.  “I’m excited that, after years of planning, everything has fallen into place for a perfect musical evening,” he added.

Ortega, an operatic tenor who voiced the role of Tony in the Miami City Ballet’s recent production of “West Side Story Suite,” is one of the featured singers. The others include Vanessa Gentzschein, Sandra Marante, Jennifer Zamorano, Megan Barrera and Celeste Higgins, all who will be accompanied by the Kindred Souls Quartet.

Marante is a musical theater star who just filmed a role in the CBS-TV series “Bull,” and has performed in several operas and musical revues, including as the leading vocalist in the Stage Door Theatre revue, “Tickling the Ivories.”

Zamorano has graced many opera houses, including the Florida Grand Opera, Miami Music Festival, Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera New Jersey, Vero Beach Opera, and many more.

Barrera was the first prizewinner of the Saint Petersburg Opera Guild Competition and
the Rochester Oratorio Society Classical Idol Competition, and has performed on many opera stages.

Higgins, is a criminal defense lawyer by day and a singer by night, performs in community theaters, blues bands, jazz ensembles, and church choirs, as well as Vinyl Answer, a rock revival band.

Additional performers include singers Rafael Almeida, Nicole Camejo, Kimberlee Cortiella, Rick Jazzed, Ryan Gardner and Charlotte Libov.

The event will also feature a meet-and-greet with the singers at an after-performance chocolate reception.

“Midnight Radio,” an occasional concert featuring music of popular eras, is part of the popular Downtowner Concert Series in Miami.

The United First Methodist Church of Miami is located at 400 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, 33132. Admission is $15 at the door.  For more info, call 786-266-5535 or email gerardojose3@mac.com.

Our Santa Fe River Songwriting Contest Deadline March 1 - Performance Set for March 25, 2018 in Ft. White, Florida

Songwriters can share their musical skills and help raise money for a good cause—the Santa Fe River, springs and aquifer—by participating in the 8th annual Songwriting Contest, being held March 25, 2018. The winner will walk away with a cash prize, and all participants will receive a professional YouTube video of their performance.

The event is part of RiverFest 2018, a series of “explore, learn and play” events sponsored by Our Santa Fe River, Inc. (OSFR), a non-profit organization working to protect the waters in North Florida. The Songwriting Contest is an annual fundraising event that offers music, food, a silent action and an afternoon of fun at Rum 138, located at 2070 Southwest County Road 138 in Fort White, FL.  Rum 138 is home to Jahfew Café and the Springs Gallery which hosts both revolving and permanent exhibits of regional artists and features a collection of acclaimed nature photographer John Moran.

This competition of original songs written about the Santa Fe River brings local and regional songwriters and music lovers from around the state to celebrate and learn about a special spring-fed river. We encourage all songwriters to write a song about the river and share their talents with our community,” said Sharon Yeago, RiverFest event chair. “Through the contest’s history, there have been more than 50 songs written about the Santa Fe River and some musicians have gone on to receive air play and Internet play of their compositions.”

The competition opens January 29th with a call to songwriters who would like to participate. After the March 1st submission deadline, judges will review the compositions, with contest participants being announced by March 16th.  At the Contest on March 25th, three judges will score the songwriters on key areas of composition and performance beginning at 2pm.  Gates open at 1pm and the event is expected end at 7pm.

Some of the contest’s past winners and contestants will be showcased on Sunday, March 18th in the OSFR Songwriters’ Reunion at Music in the Park and the Great Outdoors Restaurant in High Springs.

Contest rules and application are available online at OurSantaFeRiver.org or by emailing Rivefest@oursantaferiver.org.

Bruce Katz Band Returning to Tour Across Florida in February 2018

Get Out for Some
Musical Fun and Sun!

"This man is as good as it gets. One of the greatest
keyboard artists I’ve ever heard."  JOHN HAMMOND

"One of the most respected keyboardists on the
blues circuit."  Wade Tatangelo, HERALD-TRIBUNE

Bruce Katzrenowned Hammond B-3 organist/keyboardist, four-time Blues Music Award nominee and New York Blues Hall of Fame inductee, and his Bruce Katz Band, embark on their 'Soak Up The Sun' Tour, with destinations across the Sunshine State with Florida dates starting February 2, 2018.

While Blues remains a core influence, Katz’s music has more angles and influences, occupying a unique space where blues, "soul-jazz", jam-band rock, and all aspects of Americana Music collide into a style of original music all his own. He is equally comfortable playing Hammond B-3 organ and Piano, encompassing historical styles as well as current ideas.  Bruce has an original sound and style all his own.

In addition to leading the Bruce Katz Band, Katz has performed with the Delbert McClinton Band, Ronnie Earl, Jaimoe's Jasssz Band, and John Hammond, the latter whom he still plays with on occasion. Katz brought his cool 'jam-band' sounds last Summer to, among others, Riverfront Fest, Roots Rhythm & Blues Fest, Big Buggs Island Blues Bash (headliner), and famed BB King's Blues Club in New York City. Katz - a member of the Gregg Allman Band from 2007-2013 - also continues to tour as a member of Les Brers, featuring former members of the Allman Brothers, and was a full-time member of Butch Trucks and the Freight Train, fronted by the legendary ex-Allman Bros. drummer who passed away a year ago January.

"He can play jazz, blues, Bach, anything. Man, he’s a heavy!"  GREGG ALLMAN

"The Bruce Katz Band’s music has the air of unflagging tradition yet it blurs the lines between genres. It is of itself and beyond itself at the same time. It’s like Mozart with a jazz trio playing at Junior’s Juke Joint on a Thursday night."   BLUES BISCUITS

"Bruce Katz and his men gave those present a concert they’ll remember a long time. Vitarello is an outstanding guitarist, with an astonishing technique and a broad creative range."  ROOTSTIME

This popular event features over 15 chili teams, 35 craft beers, and great blues music. This year's Headliner is the Rev. Shawn Amos. He is a Los Angeles based, Chart Topping blues-man ready to turn our festival into a 1960's era Chicago blues club! His foot stomping, harp wailing performance will energize the faithful, and convert the wayward to the Rev's message of booty shakin', deeply joyful blues. It's a show you don't want to miss! “Being a blues singer means having a journey of pain and loss,”
says Shawn Amos. “But the music itself is all about joy,
about finding your way out of the darkness.”

In 2004 Deb started her own band Deb & the Dynamics... 13 years later they are still voted best local band every year and are known as the hardest working band in southwest Florida. Deb surrounds herself with class act musicians and is proud to be a part of the dynamics and to be a dynamic you have to give 100 percent every night and that’s what this band does.
