Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series Announced

View as web page.
Starry, Starry Nights!
World-Renowned Jazz & Classical Musicians
Gather in Coral Gables, Florida for the
32nd Community Arts Program (CAP)
Summer Concert Series!

Community Arts Program (CAP)
Summer Concert Series marks its 32nd Season,
at Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ,
with a Spectacular Summer Concert Series Line-up.

www.CommunityArtsProgram.org

This summer, June 8 through August 17, in a quiet Miami neighborhood within the historic Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ’s intimate, Spanish-revival style setting, concertgoers will have the unique opportunity to be awed and entertained by some of the music industry’s most talented and revered classical and jazz figures. These artists will perform and delight audiences at the Community Arts Program (CAP) 2017 Summer Concert Series!

The Community Arts Program Summer Concert Series has entertained more than 64,000 people since it began in 1985. The Series has grown into a time-honored tradition and, more recently, part of a Community Arts Program that provides music education to children in its Conservatory for the Arts. “The Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series is a rare opportunity to hear world-renowned artists in the intimate and beautiful Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ,” says Shelton G. Berg, University of Miami Dean of the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music. “The CAP Conservatory for the Arts provides high-quality music education to children, many of whom would otherwise be denied access to the wonder of music and the beauty of the artistic spirit.”

We are very excited to again present a diverse and world-class line up of artists,” says Mark Hart, Executive & Artistic Director of the Community Arts Program. “It’s an honor to welcome concertgoers locally, from across the state, and as far away as Europe; and rewarding to see the growth of our music education program for kids! In all, we’ve come to provide exceptional cultural- and educationally-enriching experiences for more than 3,000 children and adults each year!”

Community Arts Program (CAP) 2017
Summer Concert Series Line-Up

June 8 - MELISSA ALDANA QUARTET

The award-winning Community Arts Program (CAP) 2017 Summer Concert Series (32nd season) begins 8:00 p.m. next Thursday, June 8 with the first female instrumentalist and the first South American ever to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition, tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana. Melissa is also a recipient of the Martin E. Segal Award from Jazz at Lincoln Center and a two-time recipient of the Altazor Award, Chile’s highly prestigious national arts prize. With her Quartet—Aldana, saxophone; Sam Harris, piano; Pablo Menares, bass; and Craig Weinrib, drums—and a program that includes the music of jazz sax legends, Melissa is sure to kick off the CAP 2017 Summer Concert Series with a roar! The evening will open with the CAP Miami Jazz Institute ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble! Tickets are $35-$50 in advance at 305.448.7421, ext. 153 or www.CommunityArtsProgram.org.

June 22 - AMIT PELED
Israeli cellist Amit Peled is acclaimed as one of the most exciting instrumentalists on the concert stage today, and he charmed the CAP Summer Concert Series audience two years ago. Back by popular demand, Amit Peled performs with pianist Noreen Polera in a program that features the Cello Sonatas of Johannes Brahms, almost indisputably the most important cello sonatas from the second half of the nineteenth century. JUST IN! Amit Peled will perform this exciting recital on Pablo Casals’ exact cello, a Goffriler ca. 1733, personally handed to him by Casals' widow, Mrs. Marta Casals Istomin. This promises to be an incomparable evening of music.

July 6 - TONY DESARE
Critically acclaimed singer and pianist Tony DeSare has played jazz clubs, Las Vegas, Carnegie Hall, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and appeared on the CBS Early Show, NPR, A Prairie Home Companion, and the Today Show, to name a few. With three top ten Billboard jazz albums under his belt, Tony continues to bring his fresh take to old-school class. This is a sensational holiday concert not to miss: an enchanting evening of American jazz standards and classics.

July 20 - CHRIS THOMAS KING
New Orleans’ Grammy Award-winning musician and actor Chris Thomas King is one of the world’s most influential artists, and has changed the way we think about blues. He is also known for his role as itinerant bluesman Tommy Johnson in the George Clooney film O Brother, Where Art Thou? Chris has sold more than 10 million records in this country, and is the leading blues guitarist of his generation. With guitar in hand, Chris Thomas King creates a passage from the folk blues revival of the ’60s and reinvigorates the blues as a living African-American art. This is to be an unforgettable evening!

AUGUST 3 - TONY MONACO TRIO
If one hasn’t yet heard Tony Monaco play the hottest B-3 around, they are in for a treat! In 2000, Joey DeFrancesco produced Tony’s debut recording, Burnin’ Grooves, and an international success was born, secured by eight more releases and tours around the globe. In a rousing evening with guitarist Tim Jago and drummer David Chiverton, Tony’s Hammond B-3 virtuosity on jazz standards absolutely promises to raise the roof… and raise concertgoers out of their seats!

AUGUST 17 - LOS ANGELES GUITAR QUARTET (LAGQ)
The CAP 2017 Summer Concert Series concludes with one of the most multifaceted groups in any genre: the Grammy Award-winning LAGQ. Comprised of four uniquely gifted and accomplished musicians, the LAGQ consistently plays to sold-out houses around the world. They break new ground with their inventive, critically acclaimed transcriptions, from concert masterworks to contemporary and world-music realms. In a program that spans Latin, African, Far East, Irish, folk, European and American classics, concertgoers will be transported around the globe in a breathtaking concert experience!

A feel-good, fire-breathin’ freight train of the blues, Gabe
Stillman & The Billtown Giants is a musical force to be
reckoned with ... winning over audiences at every
show with dynamic performances that showcase the
band’s musical prowess, depth of artistic passion, and
pure joy of playing ‘the blues.’ While the electrifying
trio’s sound is unmistakably rooted in American Blues,
the band draws deeply from the influences of soul, R&B,
funk, and New Orleans jazz & blues music, performing
both original songs and well-chosen ‘cover songs’ that
pay respectful homage to the true giants of the blues in
the band’s own inimitable way. But these giants always
leave mighty big footprints where ever they roam.

Florida born, now NYC resident, Dana Fuchs is a
phenomenon, a singer, songwriter, musician,
whose mesmerizing voice and presence, has led critics to
compare her to Rock Legends from Janis to Jagger. Fittingly,
she appeared in the off-Broadway production “Love, Janis.”
The multi-talented singer songwriter stars in one of the most
talked-about cult films, “Across The Universe,” where she
has a major presence both in the film, and on the soundtrack.
Perhaps Stereophile Magazine said it best, “Imagine a
sultry, more emotive Janis Joplin, backed by a higher
energy version of the late 60s Rolling Stones… Rock n’ Roll
doesn’t get any better.” Dana is currently on a world tour
in support of her highly acclaimed new CD “Broken
Down Acoustic Sessions”.

Lauren Mitchell & Annie Mack in Concert In Fort Pierce Florida, presented by Bluebird Productions

If you have to sing the blues,
why not do it in good company?
And why not take a
double dose with
Lauren & Annie?

Friday, May 19, 2017 ~ 8pm
The Sunrise Theatre
Black Box
117 S Second Street
Ft. Pierce, FL 34950
sunrisetheatre.com  (772)461-4775

Lauren Mitchell, the Florida based soul singer, who has been compared to Etta James by Josh Sklair (Etta's former music director), will be performing alongside the dynamic Annie Mack, who hails from Rochester, Minnesota on Friday, May 19th at the Sunrise Theater Black Box Cabaret. The show will start at 8:00pm.

Lauren's new album, “Desire”, produced by Grammy Winner Tony Braunagel (Bonnie Raitt, Taj Majal, Robert Cray), was just released to the public on March 31, and is climbing the charts. In the last few weeks “Desire” came in at #1 on The Roots Music Report Soul/Blues Chart, has spent two months on the Living Blues Chart, and has remained in the top 40 overall on the Blues RMR Chart. "Desire" has been said to be "The way blues should be sung today" (Wasser-Prawda, Germany), and Lauren's vocals have been hailed as "enough to cause thunder and lightning from the skies" (Bentley's Bandstand).  Lauren was also the Suncoast Blues Society's 2014 IBC winner and performed at the Women in Blues Showcase in Memphis the same year

... which is where fate would connect these two female vocalists ...

When the two met in January 2014, Annie Mack had just released her debut album "Baptized in the Blues" which received a Blues Blast nomination among other accolades. "Baptized in the Blues" is described by Annie as "her life story" and "something [she] had to write before going on to anything else".  A mix of blues, soul, and gospel, "Baptized in the Blues" tells that story beautifully. Most recently, Annie has released a new EP "Tell it Like it Is",  in the UK to great fanfare ... the corresponding album is in it's final stages and will be released overseas and in the US this coming Fall.

With her high energy backing band, and her full-throttle all-or-nothing live performance, Lauren Mitchell will rock the house with her original concoctions of blues and soul. Joined by Annie Mack with her compelling songwriting, the electricity and charisma will be through the roof! This is definitely a show you will not want to miss!
