Cuban Jazz Pianist Harold López-Nussa's Trio at Jacksonville's Ritz Theatre May 7, 2017

Havana JAZZ!

Sunday, May 7, 2017 ~ 7:30pm
829 N. Davis St.
Jacksonville, FL 32202

The Ritz Theatre and Museum is proud to welcome Cuban musician, Harold López-Nussa on Sunday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Havana based composer and pianist Harold López-Nussa is a musician whose musical voice is now being heard around the world. El Viaje (The Journey), López-Nussa’s recent debut release on Mack Avenue Records, visits many genres of music and travels smoothly between Harold’s classical, native and jazz inspirations. Soon after release, the album reached No. 1 on iTunes Jazz Chart and No. 2 on Amazon’s Jazz Chart.

The recording features The Harold López-Nussa Trio with younger brother Ruy López-Nussa on drums and percussion, himself a star in the distinguished López-Nussa Family of renowned Cuban musicians. Recent performances at The Montreux, Monterey, Montreal and Tokyo Jazz Festivals; The Kennedy Center; and The San Francisco Jazz Center have fortified Harold’s reputation as a profound musician of rising stature who has fully integrated his classical training and love of the jazz continuum with his Cuban roots and soul.

Winner of the 2015 Downbeat Readers Poll and 2016 Downbeat Critics Poll for Baritone Saxophonist of the Year, Gary Smulyan is recognized as the major voice on the baritone saxophone. His playing is marked by an aggressive rhythmic sense, an intelligent and creative harmonic approach -- and perhaps most importantly – a strong and incisive wit. Smulyan carries on the rich tradition of the jazz organ quartet, first explored by jazz heavyweights such as Fats Waller and Count Basie in the 1920s, with his own jazz organ quartet featuring jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein, organist Mike LeDonne and drummer Joe Farnsworth.

Willie Jones III (WJ3) Jazz Sextet
With an unparalleled style of rhythmic expression, Willie Jones III is one of the world's leading jazz drummers. Jones brings together five of his gifted, world-renowned friends to form an all-star jazz sextet....WJ3 All-Stars.

Tenor saxophonist, Jeff Rupert has been a featured soloist on dozens of recordings with artists like Maynard Ferguson, Sam Rivers, Mel Tormé, Diane Schuur and Benny Carter.  He has performed at festivals and venues around the world. The Rupert Group blends jazz excellence with the vocal mastery of 22 year-old jazz singing phenom and runner up in the 2015 prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition, Veronica Swift, along with piano accompaniment from highly acclaimed, Richard Drexler. Marty Morell on drums and Ben Kramer on bass round out the group.

The Bill Cunliffe Trio
Jazz pianist, composer and Grammy-winning arranger Bill Cunliffe is known for his swinging and lyrical pianism.  He performs around the world as a leader and sideman as well as a soloist with symphony orchestras.  In the Bill Cunliffe Trio, Cunliffe teams with bassist, Martin Wind, and drummer, Tim Horner, to create a piano-driven exposé of some of the most popular Jazz music today.
