Jazz Society of Palm Beach Presents Shelly Berg Trio in Inaugural Dinner Concert Sunday March 5, 2017

An Affair
to Remember

Inaugural Concert  of the
Jazz Society of Palm Beach

The All Music Guide says “Shelly Berg is one of the finest pianists around in the early 21st century playing modern mainstream jazz.” His CD, Blackbird, recorded with the Shelly Berg Trio on the Concord Records label, reached #1 in US jazz radio and garnered Record of the Year and Artist of the Year nominations (Jazzweek, 2005). His subsequent solo CD Shelly Berg: The Nearness of You (Arbors) and a two-piano album with Dick Hyman Meeting of Minds (Victoria) were both critically acclaimed. A Steinway piano artist, Shelly Berg recently performed live and recorded his own Jazz Variations on “Rhapsody in Blue” and other Gershwin selections with the Shelly Berg Trio and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. He performed and arranged for Arturo Sandoval's Grammy Award winning Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You) and Latin Grammy winning A Time for Love (Concord) and has appeared on several NPR radio broadcasts for Jim Cullum's Riverwalk Jazz series.

Gary Burton & Makoto Ozone Presented by South Florida JAZZ March 4, 2017

View as web page.
Virtuosi -
A Farewell Concert

Saturday, March 4, 2017 ~ 8 PM

Rose & Alfred Miniaci
Performing Arts Center
(Nova Southeastern University campus in Davie)
3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd,
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33314

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, presents the renowned Gary Burton / Makoto Ozone on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 8 PM. The concert takes place at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Tickets are $40 ($10 for students under age 25 with valid I.D.) and can be purchased from Ticketmaster either online via southfloridajazz.org or by calling 954-462-0222.

Vibraphonist Gary Burton  is well known to South Florida JAZZ audiences, serving as the organization’s artistic advisor, while also playing notable duo performances with  pianists Chick Corea and Makoto Ozone, as well as with his band. Gary is the most important vibraphonist of the modern era. Largely self-taught, he has been a major innovator on his instrument having mastered a much-copied four-mallet technique. His accomplishments are widely noticed with 22 nominations resulting in seven Grammy Awards. He has been voted Best Vibraphonist in innumerable trade publications. In 2016 he was awarded a Fellowship by the NEA as a Jazz Master.
Makoto Ozone (o-zo-nee) was born into a musical family in Kobe, Japan and began to play rogan at age two. At twelve, inspired by Oscar Peterson, he switched to piano. While classically trained, he strove to become a jazz pianist and met Gary Burton whenhe came to Berklee School of Muicis in Boston to study in 1980. He played a solo concert in Carnegie Hall in 1983, the samae year that he joined Gary's band. He stayed in the US until 1989, returnig to Japan where he continued  his jazz career and also hosted a TV show. In recent years, Makoto has been performing works from the classical repertoire with major orchestras to rave reviews - a very rare acceptance of a jazz musician. He remains a serious jazz player, as this concert will confirm.

In 2013, in commemoration of the  30th  anniversary of their debut together, Makoto toured with Gary in Japan for a month. They have now collaborated memorably for over 33 years.

Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County
Board of Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.

Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes - Special Announcement for Mt. Dora Show 2/28! Play with Johnny!

The Godfather of "the New Jersey Sound," Southside Johnny is again touring across the continent!

In a business where success is defined as getting a second single and longevity measured in nanoseconds, simply surviving for thirty-plus years is a rare accomplishment. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes have not only survived, they have flourished: more than thirty albums, several EPs and a box set; thousands of live performances around the globe; a legion of dedicated and enthusiastic fans; dozens of classic songs; and a release named by Rolling Stone one of the “top 100 albums of the 70s and 80s.” Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes emerged from the New Jersey shore scene in 1974, and though they carried over a significant influence from Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, the Jukes evolved as more of a white R&B horn band in the Memphis Stax Records tradition. The band is well known for high-energy shows and no-hold barred songs, including I Don’t Wanna Go Home, Havin’ A Party, The Fever, Talk To Me, Trapped Again and This Time It’s For Real. Still tinged with the exuberant rhythm and blues feel that is the Jukes’ trademark, and loaded with the driving sound of the legendary Jukes horn section, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes continue to expound their signature Jersey Shore sound - all for the sheer joy of it!

FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS BOCA Starts Next Week! Tickets Still Available for Marsalis, Mendes Concerts

11TH ANNUAL
FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS BOCA

UNVEILS EXTRAORDINARY PROGRAM
OF ARTISTS AND AUTHORS

MARCH 2 – 12, 2017
Festival Celebrates Music in Film, Youth Prodigies
and Talent From Around the World

Festivalof the Arts BOCA returns to the Mizner Park Amphitheater and the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center, presented by Schmidt Family Centre for the Arts, March 2 – 12, 2017, with a diverse and exciting line-up to celebrate its 11th installation.

“We are so excited to present the 2017 Festival of the Arts BOCA season and we think the audience will be too,” said Charlie Siemon, co-founder and co-producer. “We have stars from all over the world, from Brazil to Indonesia to Mexico and the United States, and famous music from the most beloved films and opera, by the world’s greatest composers.  And three of the headliners have a combined age of 45!”

“Our Authors & Ideas Program is extremely varied, exploring areas of politics, the arts, science and fiction,” added Siemon.

On Friday, March 3 at 7 p.m., the Festival will welcome Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis joining The Symphonia, Boca Raton conducted by Constantine Kitsopoulos, in a program that will include music by John Williams from Catch Me if You Can, Star Wars and Harry Potter.

On Saturday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m., the Festival will feature the most popular opera of all time, La Bohème, in a semi-staged version (in Italian with English supertitles), with The Symphonia and Kitsopoulos and a stellar cast of young singers. Billed as “Opera for the 99 Percent”, La Bohème will be an experience everyone can afford, with tickets starting at $9.99.

On Sunday, March 5 at 7 p.m., 13-year old Indonesian jazz piano prodigy, JoeyAlexander, who wowed Festival-goers last season, returns to Mizner Park Amphitheater in a double bill with 13-year old Mexican classical pianist Daniela Liebman.  Accompanied by The Symphonia and Constantine Kitsopoulos, the two teen prodigies will perform a program including Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and new symphonic arrangements of Joey Alexander’s music.

A big surprise is in store for the concert Friday, March 10 at 7:30pm: the romantic Violin Concerto in G Minor by Bruch will be performed by a world-renowned Mystery Violinist, whose name will be revealed in January.  Completing the program with The Symphonia and  Maestro Kitsopoulos will be Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with wunderkind Daniel Hsu, who performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra this past summer.

The Festival’s last performance will take place on Sunday, March 12 at 7 p.m. with three-time Grammy Award winning Sergio Mendes & Brasil 2017 in an exclusive South Florida appearance.  Widely recognized as one of the most successful Brazilian artists of all time, Sergio Mendes will bring his favorite hits including “Mas Que Nada” to Boca Raton, closing the Festival on a dynamic note.

The Author & Ideas Program welcomes Jennifer Egan, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Visit from the Good Squad; Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor for The New Yorker; Jon Meacham, presidential historian, Pulitzer Prize winner and contributing editor at Time magazine; and Brian Greene, author of The Elegant Universe, theoretical physicist and entertaining communicator of cutting-edge scientific concepts.

Tickets for the 11th Annual Festival of the Arts BOCA range from $9.99 to $125 per person and will be available starting November 1, 2016 at www.festivalboca.org or by calling (866) 571-ARTS (866-571-2787).  Multi-event and full Festival packages are also available.
The 11th Annual Festival of the Arts Boca, South Florida’s premiere literary and performing arts Festival, returns to the Mizner Park Amphitheater and the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center presented by the Schmidt Family Centre for the Arts March 2 – 12, 2017.  A world-class, multi-day cultural arts event, the Festival of the Arts BOCA brings the most sought after jazz artists, classical performers, and authors to South Florida while simultaneously cultivating the stars of tomorrow.  For program details and ticket information visit: www.festivalboca.org.
