Veronica Swift
w/ Jeff Rupert on Sax
Jazz singer Veronica O’Brien (stage name Veronica Swift) is a seasoned pro with 2 CDs as a leader (and a number as a sideman), festival appearances and headlining performances at major clubs around the country. In the summer of 2010 and 2011 Veronica was selected through a nationwide audition, as the first singer to be part of the Telluride Jazz All-Star Band and performed at the Telluride Jazz Festival in Colorado. She is one of 45 singers selected to participate in the Virginia Governors School for the Performing. Her style is unique and interesting as she presents her voice in a mature laid-back, easy swinging jazz style a la Peggy Lee. She’s capable of fast swing as well as slow ballads and can tackle some of the most complicated music in jazz vocal repertory, including Annie Ross’ “Twisted”, Jon Hendricks’ “Four”, and other numbers made famous by Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. Veronica headlined at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Jazz at Lincoln Center in NYC, Blues Alley in Washington, DC and with her parents at the Jazz Standard in NYC as well as numerous festivals and clubs around the country. In the spring of 2011 Veronica was the featured singer at the premier of trumpeter John D’Earth’s symphony “Ephemera” at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville, Virginia and perfomred with the 2012 Grammy Jazz Choir, appearing in concerts and recorded in the L.A. area Feb 3-13, 2012.  Veronica is the recipient of a full scholarship from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music where she studies Jazz And Studio Voice.  She also recieved the LeRoi Moore Scholorship from Albemarle H.S. (LeRoi was a member of the Dave Matthews Band before his untimely death and attended AHS).  She also spends the majority of her time working on her electronic music and production outside of her school studies.

Louis Sedell Hayes was born May 31, 1937 in Detroit Michigan. He was always surrounded by music, actually first starting with the piano, before his father gave him a set of drums at age 10. A cousin noticed his talent, took him under his wing and made sure that his approach to the instrument would serve him well. And well it did, for after developing his skills in the fertile musical ground of Detroit in the 1950's with the likes of Yusef Lateef, Kenny Burrell, Doug Watkins and others, Louis found himself at the tender age of 18 in New York as a member of the great Horace Silver Quintet. His first recording with Horace, the classic Six Pieces of Silver would introduce him to the jazz world as a new force to be acknowledged.

Louis Hayes with Oscar Peterson on piano and bassist Sam Jones.
Hayes and Jones became known as the "dynamic duo" rhythm section.
Louis continued to enhance his reputation with Horace from 1956 until 1959 when he joined Cannonball Adderley where he propelled the quintet to joyous musical heights and timeless recordings through 1965. He joined piano master Oscar Peterson from 1965-67 during which time he and bassist Sam Jones became known as the "dynamic duo", recognized as the most powerful rhythm duo in jazz. Louis would rejoin Oscar in 1971 for a year.

For the next decade or more he became leader or co-leader of a series of electrifying groups which included musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Barron, Junior Cooke, Woody Shaw and Dexter Gordon. Louis also spent several years touring with McCoy Tyner. The Louis Hayes Group with Herald Mabern and Frank Strozier culminated four years of artistry with the album; Variety is the Spice which received five stars, truly an accomplishment during a period when his style of hard driving, "bebop" was less preferred. He continuously traveled throughout the United States, Europe and Japan making musical history wherever he performed.

Louis has played and recorded with jazz greats such as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, J J Johnson, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Wes Montgomery, Joe Henderson, Cedar Walton, George Benson as well as Ravi Shankar, John Lee Hooker and others.

He has had numerous honors and awards, here is just a sampling:
  • The Down Beat New Star Award - 1961
  • State Of Louisiana Special Recognition Award -1986
  • State Of Michigan Special Tribute 1996
  • The Society of the Culturally Concerned Appreciation Award - 1996
  • The Greater Jamaican Development Corp. In Appreciation of - 1996
  • Spirit Of Detroit Award -2004
  • Life Time Achievement Award From Bakers Keyboard Lounge - 2004
  • United States House Of Representatives Special Tribute - 2004
Recent engagements of note would include The Kennedy Center for the Arts, The JVC Jazz Festival, The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and the Chivas Jazz Festival in Brazil.  His current endeavors primarily involve the leadership of The Cannonball Legacy Band, which pays tribute to the gifted art form of that heritage and The Jazz Communicators which is Louis' desire to continue bringing exciting musical alternatives to audiences around the world.

Brenda attended the Univ. of Miami as a jazz vocal performance major, and her compositions have been performed by the award-winning U of M Jazz Vocal Ensemble, directed by Larry Lapin.  Her own recordings include “Brenda Alford Live at Morgan State,” “Last Night In Baltimore,” and “My Favorite Things” - recorded live at the Old Dillard Museum with The Othello Molineaux Quartet, and she’s performed in two movies - Jon Waters’ “Hairspray” and Barry Levinson’s “Avalon”. About the Little Jake
& The Soul Searchers

Little Jake Mitchell is an authentic blues child prodigy and R&B singer who works as hard today as he did in his appearances at the Apollo Theater; as hard as he did on tour as "Mr. Excitement" with R&B immortals James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, and Bobby Blue Bland, or at the Pensacola Blues Festival, when B. B. King encouraged him to stay in show business.

Little Jake & The Soul Searchers—that's what you get when you combine Jake with The Silver-Sonic Horns and a powerful rhythm section. The band recalls authentic R&B stagecraft in support of a classic repertoire of soulful songs. Depending on the venue, Jake and the band treat audiences to sights and sounds seldom seen or heard since the golden age of R&B: opening singers, Tran “The Piano Man” Whitley and drummer, Hal "Halag8r" Saylor; a dynamic, audience-walking lead singer; a strolling horn section; a full-time emcee/announcer, Kenny "The Conductor" Eunice; and one of the funkiest rhythm sections around. The band's roots are deep, featuring sidemen who worked with Ike and Tina Turner, Billy Joe Royal, Ernie K Doe, Hues Corporation, and other R&B and rock pioneers.

The Silver-Sonic Horns, originally organized as The Blacklash Horns by Charlie Blade, trace their heritage back to 1969 when initially formed as the horn section for one of Florida's R&B pioneer band, Weston Prim & Blacklash: Blade on saxes, and long-time collaborator Brian 'T-Bone' Stevens on trombone. They are joined by Doug 'Skywalker' Meyers on trumpet. Classic R&B section-horn energy, funky improvisation by the whole horn section, a great appearance, and a topnotch sound system make The Silver-Sonic Horns an integral part of the Jake Mitchell experience.

The rhythm section features keyboardist and vocalist, Tran Whitley, holding forth on the real deal—a vintage Hammond B3 organ that anchors the band. Tran is joined by seasoned guitarist / backup vocalist, Charles Henry, who can play it funky, and does. On Fender bass, with years of experience beginning with Billy Joe Royal's road band, Allen McCollum keeps the bass line bumping and jumping. Providing energetic pulse and punctuation, and featured as an opening vocalist in every show: Hal Saylor on drums.

Little Jake Mitchell is one of Florida's great native-son ambassadors in rhythm and blues music. Little Jake & The Soul Searchers deliver authentic style and classic repertoire at every performance.
