Jazz & Blues Florida August 2016 Issue Posted - Florida's Premier Guide to Live Jazz & Blues in Clubs, Concerts & Festivals

Another hot, hot month of
cool blues and jazz near you!
And a peek into the season!

The August issue of Jazz & Blues Florida has been posted at www.JazzBluesFlorida.com as your guide to the best in live jazz and blues across Florida. This month's features, all of which cover artists performing in Florida this month, are: Kim Reteguiz, Allen-Lamun Band, Wendy Rich, Markey Blue, Kellie Rucker, Eric Steckel, Betty Fox, Phill Fest, Tal Cohen, Peter and Will Anderson, Isaac Byrd Jr., Pamela Williams and Lyle Lovett.

Along with the features, we are presenting a major new jazz & blues festival that will be taking place in Tallahassee, the return of The New Smyrna Beach Jazz Festival (a Jazz & Blues FAVORITE!), and northern festivals that far away from any possibility of hurricane landfall. And the 2016-17 season is starting to unfold with the announcement of Gold Coast Jazz Society's 7-month series. As always, the music and good times are out there. Us use to find out where and when, then go get yourself some!

Please visit our pages often, and share. Repeat.

Best!
Charlie

The Allegheny Jazz Party’s history goes all the way back to Conneaut Lake and the 1st Annual Conneaut Lake Jazz Festival in 1982.  Jazz promoter Joe Boughton from Meadville, PA, was the owner of the JUMP record label.  He had a long roster of top- notch artists, both new and established, and brought them all together once a year for a weekend of traditional jazz.  Joe’s focus was on the great jazz tunes, whether well known or seldom played.  He programmed his roster of musicians in large ensembles and small groups, and insisted that everyone stick to traditional, straight ahead performances of the best music.

Over the years, his jazz party and the other performances he produced in Meadville grew in popularity.  Once the hotel at Conneaut Lake was no longer in use, the party moved to the Athenaeum Hotel in Chautauqua, NY in 1997.  Joe’s Allegheny Jazz Society produced the party, known as Jazz at Chautauqua, until his death in 2010, playing to sold out audiences year after year.

During Joe’s last years, Nancy Hancock Griffith, a musician and lawyer from Cleveland, Ohio and a huge fan of the party, started helping Joe with the logistics, especially booking the musicians and assisting with the program.  At Joe’s death, the Chautauqua Institution took over Jazz at Chautauqua as part of their off season programming, and hired Nancy as its music director.

Nancy is a native Clevelander and has been involved in music and the arts all her life.  She plays piano and woodwinds, and has an undergraduate degree in voice from Concordia University in Ann Arbor.  After music school, Nancy followed in her father’s footsteps and attended law school at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, graduating summa cum laude, Order of the Coif.  She practiced corporate law for several years before joining the fundraising staff of The Cleveland Orchestra, where she served as Director of Planned Gift and Endowment Fundraising.  After Nancy left the Orchestra, she began her own firm in Cleveland, BauerGriffith, LLC, representing a wide variety of nonprofit organizations, including some of Cleveland’s largest and most influential arts organizations.

After the 2013 party, the 16th Annual Jazz at Chautauqua, the Chautauqua Institution made some changes to its off season priorities, and Jazz at Chautauqua found itself without a home.  Unwilling to let Joe Boughton’s legacy fade away, Nancy and her mother, Kathy Hancock, decided to move the party to Cleveland, Ohio.  Same great party, same musicians, but a different location for the Annual Allegheny Jazz Party.

For fans of the old Jazz at Chautauqua, there will be a few changes to the weekend, but very little difference in what will happen on stage.  Nancy and Kathy remain committed to continuing Joe Boughton’s tradition of great tunes, played by the country’s best traditional jazz artists in a setting that allows musicians and attendees to mingle and talk about their favorite kind of music.

We’re very excited for the prospects for the party, and hope to attract new friends and supporters in our new home, as well as staying in touch with all of the patrons who made this party so successful for so many years.

This year’s Cleveland Classic Jazz Party is at the InterContinental Hotel and Conference Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and runs from September 15 through 18, 2016.  We will have 29 musicians who will perform in various combinations on one stage in a cabaret setting.   More information on the party as well as the Allegheny Jazz Society is available on our website at www.alleghenyjazz.org or call 216-956-0886.  Those in tune with social media can also visit us on FACEBOOK at Allegheny Jazz Party.

WHY VISIT CUBA?

Its Music:

The music of Cuba, including its instruments, performance and dance, comprises a large set of unique traditions influenced mostly by west African and European (especially Spanish) music. Due to the syncretic nature of most of its genres, Cuban music is often considered one of the richest and most influential regional music of the world. Since the 19th century Cuban music has been hugely popular and influential throughout the world. It has been perhaps the most popular form of regional music since the introduction of recording technology. Cuban music has contributed to the development of a wide variety of genre and musical styles around the globe, most notably in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa.

Its Culture:

"To be cultured is the only way to be free." José Martí

For a small country, Cuba has a very large soul. It's all owing to a culture which is rich, vibrant and immensely varied. At the island's heart are the Cubans, brought here by the trade winds from all corners of the earth to forge a new people. Amerindian Taino, Spanish, African, French, Asian and English ways of life took root in Cuba, but in the mixing of the cultures became something new and utterly distinct. The search for the essence of Cuba is perhaps what drives the vital cultural tradition here.

Its People:

Cuba's nearly 12 million people are mostly Spanish and Africans who came to the island over the past 500 years. About 65 percent of Cubans consider themselves as white or descendants of Spanish colonial settlers and other immigrants. Around 10 percent of the population is black, 20 percent mulatto (a mixture of European and African) and 1 percent Chinese who were brought in as laborers in the mid-1800s as the slave trade from Africa disappeared. One thing that sets Cubans apart from other Caribbean peoples is their work ethic. Of all Latin American people Cubans are by far the hardest working and are known for their business acumen and entrepreneurial skills. However, the Cuban people are unique in that they combine a strong work ethic with the ability to enjoy themselves like other Latins.

In order to enable you to experience Cuban society, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the Cuban music, cuisine and culture while coming home to the safety of your cruise ship accommodations.

THE  CRUISE SHIP
MV Adonia

The modern 704-passenger Adonia, your home for the seven days of your journey, is a small adventure in itself. In addition to nourishing your hunger to make a difference, your voyage will also nourish your body with thoughtfully prepared, Cuban-inspired meals that include a variety of vegetarian options. There's a pool, a gym, a games deck, even a full-sized library. And, of course, there's the infinite mystery of the wide, wide sea around you. So your spirit gets a bit of extra nourishment too. But, beyond its built-in amenities, what matters most about the Adonia  is its size. It's small enough to let you get genuinely acquainted with your fellow travelers: the people who share your desire for meaningful human connection. And, for our adventurers, that's the most important amenity of all.
