Love for one another...(...and the love music, finds Allen Kanovsky once again in the right place!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 06/29/15

...brought a whole bunch of BLUES musician to a recently opened BLUES club in Ft. Lauderdale.

It was a fund-raiser for WKPXFM(88.5) personality, Dar and her long-running Sunday Blues with Dar program. I think every BLUES artist from the Keys to Jacksonville was there. I must have hugged and cheek kissed 50, mebbe 60 luverly gals. Must have shook hands with the same number of guys. Hugged a couple of them too.(names will remain unmentioned). Loads of civilians (BLUESiacs) were there as well including me, Charlie Boyer and Kathy Kniffen. If I were to name those in attendance who I know by name it would take until early in 2016. As you can see in some of Charlie's pix the "joint was jumping". ( SEE FACEBOOK PHOTO ALBUM AT:  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10205418069865935.1073742052.1075458403&type=1&l=a641cf91df).

Did not hear a note of any of the music played 'cause of the crowd and the sub-standard sound system that keeps the music inside the wide-open doors. Had a great time anyway partially because Charlie picked up my tab but mostly because of the warm hearts that were there to support the BLUES.

Headed east to 33 St. and Eric & the JAZZers. I was happy to listen to a change of playlist. Be-bop ruled the night with the 2 first tunes being "Billie's Bounce" and "Dizzy Atmosphere". There was a new drummer, Jose Duque. Anthony Corrado sat in on the openers playing alto. Yamin Mustafa (trumpet), Ken Burkhart (keys) and Cornelius (Juju) Johnson (reeds) completed the band.

Vocalist Claire Petric was invited to the stage. She is a well known 'country' singer. She put her reputation aside and did a little bit of R&B with "Sunny". Displayed her BLUES chops with "Let the Good Times Roll" and totally blew me away with her very imaginative "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" with Yamin supplying background. Yvette Norwood-Tiger, the bands regular vocalist would do Ellington's "In A Mellow Tune" and "April In Paris". Ken continues his quoting hysteria adding a little "Jumping With Symphony Sid".

The band opened the 2nd set with Invitation and I got the chance to dance with a new friend, Gabbie. Back to be-bop with Monk's "Well You Needn't" I started to get the idea that his might be a JAZZ band after all. Yami, Juju and Ken all delivering creative solos. JoEll a young trombonist joins in on "C Aura" a Lee Morgan composition. Yvette does "Lullaby of Birdland" and "Nature Boy". My pal, Matt Calderon is in the audience with his girlfriend and is invited to sit in. They do any drummer's dream tune "Cherokee". Eric is slack-jawed at Matt's flawless performance. They play "Watermelon Man" and Yvette closed the set with "The More I See You.

The evening ended with a tune that as a 16 year old I sang 3 times a night, 6 days a week for 5 months. The tunes title was "Don't Get Around Much Anymore". My drummer, Earl Schiff(R>I>P>) called it "Mister Saturday Dance".

Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"

Cadet Hotel in South Beach hosts media night for summer music event announcement

This past week Jazz & Blues Florida received an invitation to venture to South Beach and attend a small soiree for the introduction to the media for a new summer jazz series to be held at The Cadet Hotel.  We spiffed up with the appropriate sartorial correctness and headed south!

It seems I haven't been to South Beach in quite some time, and across the MacArthur Causeway in longer! Wow...big changes along the way. Much different from the monthly visits at 3am to deliver the hard copies of Hot House Florida to places that no longer exist! Will The Cadet fill this void? We hope so!

The Hotel Manager, Ms. Giulia Loiacono, was there to greet us and get us settled with beverages and some tasty treats while Antulio Mora lead his trio through some Latin Jazz (Antulio - grand piano, Miguel Gomez - upright bass, and Charlie Santiago on percussion). The concert is (and will be) held in the lobby which although 'intimate' is a good match for the resident 36-seat fine dining restaurant, Pied a Terre, and the 'feel' of this historic Art Deco hotel.  On a historical note, The Cadet (built in 1941) was recruited and served its country by housing United States Air Force Cadets from 1941–1949. Appropriately stylish, the dashing commander of the West Point Cadets housed at the hotel was none other than Captain Clark Gable!

Dr. Vilma Biaggi, the owner and inspiration for the continuation of the property being stylish and pertinent to the cultural community of Florida, is also the impresario of the soon-coming summer jazz series and has drawn for the wealth of talent in Southeast Florida to create a 4-day event that will leave any aficionado sated, in the manner of music, food and comfort!

Please enjoy the photos below, which in no way do the property justice, and you will find the series information at the bottom with links for more information.

THE light in the dark!

The Scene - Classic!
Hard to discern, but this is the historical marker regarding Clark Gable's command of the West Point Cadets.
The lobby bar, appointed properly with pretty women and excellent service.

A wonderful space to settle into and relax, surrounded by the hustle of SoBe.

Thank you for the introduction and the music!

Wild mushroom, salmon trio and avocado treats in accompaniment of an excellent wine with live jazz and excellent company. Nice. Miami Beach Nice....

There is an accompanying dinner being offered for the jazz evenings...

Just walking up to the door, you know you are in for special dining treat!

Antulio Mora Trio providing the soundtrack the evening and returning to participate in the series.

Dr. Biaggi and GM Loiacono flanked by tonight's artists and Leo Quintero who will open the series on July 9th.

One of the outside dining/sitting spaces!

Yes, I can imagine participating in an EXCELLENT party in this tropical garden!

And, here is the information on the series!
