When a master musician...(Allen Kanovsky gets in touch with his Latin side at BaCA with Sammy Figueroa.)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 04/30/15

...surrounds himself with other masters, you are gonna hear some masterful stuff. It happened last night at a BaCA event at their gallery in Pompano Beach. Complimentary snacks, wine and great Latin JAZZ. Congero Sammy Figueroa led a sextet that totally captivated the audience. Brian Potts (vibes), Chino Nunez (timbalero), Antulio Mora (keyboard), Augustin Conti (bass) and incredible on bongos was (I completely missed his name but he is pictured below). The program ran from bop to bossa---Tito Puente, Carlos Jobim, Cal Tjader and Dizzy Gillespie hits. Each and every solo inspired them to greater musical heights. Clave permeated the room and I couldn't keep my seat and most enjoyed my salsa moments with party planner Annette Munoz.
I was a "mambonik" in the late 40's, early 50's dancing every Wednesday night at the Palladium in N.Y. I am infused with the overlaying patterns of rhythm. Sammy is mostly self-taught but adhering to the lessons learned by studying. Antulio was having such a ball that 2 or 3 times allowed himself 2 chorus solos.Layer congas, timbales and bongos over melodic patterns by Brian and Antulio and you are truly in a wonderland. Hope I can hear this group again soon.

Too early for bed and it's Nicky Orta's birthday---which one? Who knows? Better yet, who cares? Maybe wife Debbie or his Mom or his kids. I don't. I don't think his brother Mike or Danny Burger care either. In any case Debbie Orta was Danny Burger's featured guest artist. Nicky celebrated his birthday playing bass, Mike at the piano and Danny behind the snare, tom-toms, hi-hat, cymbals and bass drum. Debbie did the vocals. I walked in catching the last notes of "Willow Weep For Me" Memories of June Christy and the Kenton band. An up-tempo "Down With Love" continued my faded memories. Nancy and Jimmy Belize had a seat waiting for me. Denise was waiting anxiously for a dance partner. I accommodated her----several times. Debbie has expanded her repertoire to include many of the JAZZ hits of bygone days. She does them justice. We sang Happy Birthday to Nicky and were treated to a variety of B.D. cakes. All good. More folks than usual stayed for all 3 sets and a good time was had by all.

Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
