There's no fool like...(And Allen Kanovsky ain't fooling around here!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 01/31/15

...an old fool and there's no JAZZophile like a really old JAZZophile. This one did the JAZZ marathon yesterday.

It started at the Miami Wine Exchange (open only 6 months) where they have live JAZZ, Bossa, and BLUES. The musicians were Maryann (vocals) and Michael (guitar). They did employ some rhythm tracks. I normally don't review acts with tracks but Michael had laid these tracks down himself so no engineering tricks were employed. Maryann's voice is well suited for JAZZ/BLUES and Michael's backing complements her stylings. The place is small, 8 seats at the bar and 10 tables for 2. There are hookahs available for use and a very nice wine selection at $6 & $7 a glass. Interesting menu. The duo played just as advertised. Some Bossa/Samba, some JAZZ and some BLUES. They did "Desifinado", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Caravan" and "Summertime" in Bossa time, "Drink Muddy Water", "Stormy Monday", the "oohba" tune with Michael playing 'dumbek',a novelty, "Be My Sugar Daddy" and closed the set with "A Day In the Life of a Fool". I thank Felicity (owner) for dedicating herself to a live music program and take off for "Soykas".

The owner has made presenting live "JAZZ" at his restaurants part of his life work. It is truly commendable. Tonight they had Mike Orta (piano), brother Nicky (bass guitar) and Carlomag(nific)o Araya playing drums. Mike and Nicky's Mom was in the audience and their and my friend Carlos showed up as well. When I sat down, a soft voice sounded over my shoulder. "Can I get you a menu, or something like that?" I turned and said, "Yes, something like that." The voice belonged to the owner's lovely daughter. I told her that one of my first poetic endeavors was titled " or sumthin like dat" written for a fellow inmate named "Cheech". The trio is playing a tune titled "Old Folks". They follow with "You and the Night and the Music". They take turns with the solos and I settle down to 'good listening' with Kathy (the Orta's Mom). They do "Doxy" to a Latin beat and then "Joy" to end the set. The 2nd set turns out to be one of those moments we spend our time, listening to music for. It opened with "Autumn Leaves". The audience, filled with chattering diners, stilled to listen. Mike is brilliant. Nicky won't be left behind. Carlomagno keeps them in line trading 4's with each. They follow with a composition whose title starts with "Para ???????-I didn't catch the rest. The tune changes rhythms and time signatures several times in its course. Latin, ballad, swing, are all employed. Carlomagn(ific)o shows why I call him that. Next was "Skylark". Carlo uses his brushes and all the dynamics of drumming. Carlos has requested "Just In Time". The trio does it up-tempo, jumping it. Nicky 'shows off' and then they trade 8's all around. Everybody loves "Georgia" but no one will ever duplicate Mike's solo last night. Breathtaking would be the only word to describe it. The next tune was "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" and romance returns to the room.

Talking about romance, Mike and the lovely Luz Marina Salazar will be at The Fish House on St. Valentines Day.

Things don't stay calm for long. "Jitterbug Waltz". I don't know if it's Mike's first sip of wine in over a year that's making him play like he is but, man oh man oh man. Sibling rivalry brings Nicky to incredible heights in return. All three of them should be placed "under arrest" for violation of normal play. They have us all shakin' to the rhythm of "One Note Samba" to end the set.

I'm off to Le Chat Noir for an Israeli import Nadav Remez (guitar). With Nadav are David Leon (alto sax), Jamie Ousley (bass), Tal Cohen (piano) and Michael Piolet on drums. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the titles of the tunes played but did get the message. The harmonics were definitely Middle Eastern. You could hear 'temple calls' and synagogue chants in the chord structures and rhythms. Nadav and David were playing beautiful solos as well as some dynamic unison work. The songs included one that Nadav had written for his Grandmother shortly before her passing. Another was a traditional melody played on the eve of the Sabbath. The mix of today's JAZZ and the mystique of the Middle East was intriguing. David's Mom and Dad were in the audience and enjoyed the presentation. David and Nadav had met last year at a Conference For Creative Music held in Canada last year. They prove to be a formidable force in today's JAZZ world.

I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"

There are sections of society...(And Allen Kanovsky crosses all those sections!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 01/29/15

...that consider double dipping chips as 'gauche'. If  politicians do it, it's absolutely corrupt. JAZZophiles, like me, do it at every opportunity. I'm talking about catching two different performances, at two separate locations, at different times of the day.

Early afternoon in Coral Gables for the Miami JAZZ Co-op weekly 'JAZZ In The Gables' concert and in the evening Danny Burgers Showcase in Ft. Lauderdale. I did catch a brief nap in between. The concert------The lovely Dr. Lisanne Lyons, accompanied by John Hart on guitar & Tom Williams playing bass. Simple, concise and absolutely wonderful. The program opened with John & Tom playing "Days Of Wine & Roses" immediately catching the audiences attention. Lisanne, tall, blond and beautiful is dressed for the weather. Black leather jacket, boots and all. She opens with "You'd Be So Nice To come Home To". the operative line being "You'd be so nice by the fire"  . There is a chill in the air but we are all warmed by the performance. Tom and John's hands are somewhat affected by the weather but their solos provide the necessary 'heat' to keep the circulation going. Lisanne scats a chorus or two and you can't help being impressed by her range. She does "In The Still Of The Night" in bossa rhythm and audience members are leaning forward to catch every note. Next was "I Thought About You" with Tom & John doing extended and super solos. Lisanne's scat portion displays a creative understanding of melodic and rhythmic lines. She knows JAZZ. The set ends with "You'd Be So Easy To Love". I look at her. Listen to her and think "How true!"------Ms. Dr. Lyons is engaged. He is a great guy.
The 2nd set has the duo doing a bopper and has us all T'n and C'n. Lisanne takes the mic to do "One Note Samba" Scat lines abounding. She is making people dance in their seats . No! That is not what is commonly called a "chair dance". One of my all-time favorites, from way back 'when' is "All Of Me". Lisanne swings it and includes her own JAZZ'd up lyrics. Tom does some stuff on bass that is close to unbelievable. A very tender "Nearness Of You" tells us all what love is all about. When Dr. Lyons does "The Way You Look tonight" she takes the opportunity to display the dynamics of her vocalization and her deep understanding of the JAZZ idiom. They close with "Stardust". Lovely. None of the audience wants to leave but the curtain has come down on this afternoons wonderful performance..
I am starving. (not unusual for fat guys). I am fain to admit it but Taco Bell has some good(was going to say great but good is more like it)stuff for a buck. I spend 3 and stuff my "fach". Home for that nap.

Monday night a bunch of us helped Maria Rivas celebrate a G-d Blessed birthday at the Miami JAZZ Co-ops Rent Party at the Open Stage. I believe in the Lord and I believe in birthdays, having celebrated a few myself. Last night we continued this celebration of His 'gift of Life' with Maria's appearance with Danny Burger (the brushmeister) again with Brian Murphy on the piano and adding Nicky Orta on bass. My friends(snowbirds) Michael and Joseph have finally made it to Fl. and have some family with them. BJB's is packed. The usual suspects (sans Babette still in recovery) pack the house.

I have brought Maria a birthday gift of some of Flo's jewelry. It is all costume and not custom. Flo,may she Rest In Peace, knew it was how it looked rather than how it was priced. Maria selected a pair of earrings to wear this night. She and Flo were good friends. Maria opens with "Our Love Is Here To Stay". She swings and scats as Brian brings it to greater and greater heights. As I have said before, performers have a penchant for doing "Lush Life" when I am in the house. Tonight, Maria dedicates it "to me".  Nicky delivers a moving bass solo, enhancing the mood of the tune. I recognize the next one but can't recall the title. It is a bop riff with no lyric and therefore no clue. Maria does straight scatonics and Danny, Brian and Nicky catch-up and hang on. OOOOWEEEE BABY! It is a burner. Maria takes a short break as the trio does an instrumental. Maria returns with "Autumn Leaves" in French, Spanish and Portuguese. Both Brian and Nicky are brilliant on this one. There are all kinds of lyrics fo "Night In Tunisia". Maria's version is in Spanish and it is hot, hot, hot. Brian does one of his, almost expected, 5* solos. Danny will not be outdone and 'blows' the kit up. Only Maria can get awat with doing "Funny Valentine" the way she does. Funky, and I mean FUNKY. Lots of scat and plenty of rhythm provided by the section. I am introduced to Ignacio Izcaray, a South American composer, who has written a song, in English, for Maria which will be presented at Maria's next perfromance with Danny Burger. Paying tribute to Jobim, Maria opens the 2nd set with the lovely ballad "Poco, Poco" Romantic as only Latins have been known to be. She follows with "Girl From Ipanema" A true Samba beat which intensifies and increases in tempo until Maria scats it out at an incredible speed of tongue. There is no way to follow that except for the Yiddish swing tune "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen". It is done in moderate 'lindy' time. Brian does a little 'rag' some 'stride' and even a little 'Ellington'. Nicky's solo has everyone clapping in time. Maria dos "I Got Rhythm" up tempo, with lots of scat lines. Brian and nicky keep pace and Danny is doing his thing with brushes. I must have said it one hundred times before but no one does "Besame Mucho" like Maria. It is fun. It is tragic. It tells of love. It tells of heartbreak. Maria invites me up to dance with her, off-stage. It is a thrill. The trio does one and then Maria returns with two tender songs, "We'll Be Together Again" and "All The things You Are". She and I have spoken about how someday we will all be together again in His house. When they return  Maria does her inimitable "Summertime"  She follows with dedicating "My Romance" to Flo & I, Debbie & Nicky and all those who have had true ROMANCE in their lives. Nicky's solo shows he knows what it is.  Her "Rte 66" is unusual, to say the least. I have invented the word 'scatatronic' to describe it. She has had such a good time that when she wants to do "Night and Day" she starts with the opening lines of "One Note Samba". Hey listen, there are no mistakes in JAZZ. They transpose, change keys and go right into "Night". She laughs, the trio laughs, most n the audience didn't know what really happened. What confused Maria was the Samba rhythm the trio had started with. They trade 8's to take the song out. Maria closes the show with singing an emotional "Jinjee", verse and all. During one of the breaks Maria sketched a self-portrait on my notepad. ----see below.

How do you get a...(Around like Allen Kanovsky? Drive, drive, drive!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 01/26/15

..nice Jewish boy into a church on Sunday? Easy. Present a live JAZZ program. If you want him to be on time have musicians like Joe and Kathleen Donato, Brian Murphy, Jamie Ousley, John Yarling and Randall Dollahon. It happens once a month at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Miami from January thru April. Joe informed the audience that they would be playing "pop". That is the popular music of the 30's and 40's composed by the most creative of the writers of the time. He started the program with Jerome Kern's "Dearly Beloved". Brian played the intro and then they all took a turn at soloing. They ended the tune by each trading 8s with John. I don't know how but Brian seems to nudge certain tunes toward Latin rhythms. He did it on this one. Continuing with Kern, Joe invites his wife, Kathleen, to the mic to sing "Long Ago and Far Away". One of the lyric lines goes "and now that dream is here beside me". What a lovely thought. Joe mentions that Danny Thomas once remarked that Kathleen was better than Joe. No doubt about it. Especially in the vocal Department. Enjoying the performance with me are buddy Bill and our pal Louise. Also Joe's best friend Joel Kruger and Rick Katz(Miami JAZZ Co-op). Joel was the 'shidach' maker. Introducing Joe to Rick resulting in the birth of the Miami JAZZ Co-op. Next, in chronological order is Irving Berlin. The song was originally written for one of Irving's publishers girl friends and was titled "I'll Be Loving You, Mona". Mona eventually became "Always" and an all time classic. Joe is playing his bent soprano and delivers as tender a solo as I've ever heard. Brian and Jamie reflect his mood. Kathleen returns to do "I'm Putting All My Eggs In One Basket". Berlin wrote it in 1932 in the early years of the 'swing era' and Brian knows how to 'swing it'. Now we come to George Gershwin and Kathleen does a great job on "Someone To Watch Over Me" making you believe every word. Daniell McCloud is in the audience and Joe invites him up to do "Somebody Loves Me". JAZZ,JAZZ,JAZZ. You can't leave out Richard Rodgers and they do "Blue Moon". Brian introduces the tune in a slow ballad time. John utilizes mallets for dramatic rolls and cymbal work.

If you do Rodgers can Col Porter be far behind. Joe returns to alto. John is playing with a stick in his left hand and a brush in his right. Brian and Jamie's solos on "I Love You" are as romantic as the tune itself. Porter, among the sophisticated 'pop' composers also wrote "Don't Fence Me In". We almost got through a whole set without Joe(Yussel to me) singing. Not quite lucky enough. He can sell a song and I visualize him in chaps and a ten-gallon hat, riding fence in Oklahoma, singing "Don't Fence Me In". Fortunately it was only a momentary illusion. Kathleen returns to close the set with Harold Arlen's
"Bye,Bye,Baby". The 2nd set will showcase the JAZZ composers. Duke Ellington wrote "Azalea" for Louis Armstrong. It should be played more often. Joe sits at the piano for this one. I didn't know he played. Somehow or other, maybe it's the song, but he sounds better on this one. He steps away fom the keys and puts both the saxes to his lips for "Satin Doll". The lyric was written by Johnny Mercer but Joe doesn't sing it. 'Is there a saying about 'small favors'? They follow with George Shearing's "Lullaby Of Broadway". Joe plays piccolo. John takes a 5* solo. Now Joe quotes Dizzy's statement of "No BLUES, No JAZZ!" and Kathleen returns to do a duet with Joe on "You're My Centerpiece". During Brian's solo he quotes Monk's "Straight No Chaser". Joe does a credible scat and Jamie bops his solo. Cannonball Adderley wrote and the band plays "Things Are Getting Better All the Time". They all take 2 bar breaks and it jumps. Randall not only plays but is a brilliant composer. They do one of his tunes, which for now is titled "4.99". It is a soft ballad and Joe utilizes the soprano and both he and Brian do really nice pieces. Joe wrote one based on the chord changes of Benny Golson's "Along Came Betty". Joe calls his "Cookin' at the JAZZ Coop". It is dedicated to the Miami JAZZ Co-op and it 'cooks'.

I escape the church and head for Martin Hand/ James McCoy Sunday Jam at the Q Bar in Ft. Lauderdale. If you are a JAZZophile don't miss these sessions. If you are a musician, bring your ax and sit-in. I'm in time for some of the first set which included "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off", Wes Montgomery's "Road Song", "Moonlight In Vermont" and "I've Got You Under My Skin". Martin(guitar) and James(bass) share vocals and George Mateo is at the skins. I try not to single out musical performance. It would be an injustice if I didn't say if you're not listening to Martin Hand you are not listening to JAZZ guitar. He lifts James and James lifts him to higher heights of performance. The 2nd set opens with "Invitation" They do it to a Brazilian Carnaval beat and George gets a chance to show off. Denise Shuster (one of my dance partners) joins me at the bar. She is delighted with the appearance and ambience of this new music venue. They do a Clifford Brown composition with solos by Martin and James that keep you listening to every note and chord. Probably one of the best melodies ever written is "Harlem Nocturne". Last night was the night to hear it done and done to perfection. The last set is opened with Jocko Pastorius' "Three Views of a Secret". Jocko's compositions are a constant reminder of his brilliance.R.I.P.

No night of JAZZ is complete without a little Cole Porter and so we get to hear "I Get A Kick Out Of You". They close the evening with a little "Sting". "Fragile" is the tune. It puts Denise in a romantic mood. She kisses me-----on the cheek and says 'Good Night'. So much for romance.

Next week no JAZZ at the Q Bar------Super Bowl!!!!!!!-----Following week, new times. 5PM 'til 9PM. Bring your body and your ax.
