To be or not to be...(Allen Kanovsky, AKA The Bard of 33rd, contemplates...)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 12/09/14

...critical!!!!

Those of you who have taken the time to read my reviews know that I am not a critic. I have never written a negative review. I do so because of my firm belief that listening to music is subjective rather than objective. I also believe that the way you listen and the way JAZZ musicians play, is reflective of their mood at the moment. There is no denying that I was not buoyant last night.

The featured artist at the MJC Rent Party at the Open Stage was Brazilian vocalist Roxana Amed. The band had Rudolfo Zuniga (drums), Tim Jago (guitar), Josh Allen (bass) and Mark Small (reeds). Ms. Amed has great range and sensitivity. Each of the instrumentalists are superb and talented musicians. Individually their solo performances were brilliant. Unforunately, the program itself was --- what's the proper adjective? >>> Vapid? Dull? Either would be appropriate. For the first time in my life I left a musical presentation before the end of the first set.

During the week-end my dear friend and great dance partner, Denise Shuster, lost her Mother. Many of you who read this have seen her name dozens of times. I'm sure you join me in extending our sincere condolences.

Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
