Tampa Jazz Club Presents The Valerie Gillespie Quintet 1/11/15 in Ybor City

Tampa Jazz Club and HCC/Ybor Performing Arts Series Present:

The Valerie Gillespie
Quintet

in a Tribute to:
Cannonball and Nat Adderley

The legacy of Cannonball and Nat Adderley will be celebrated on Sunday, January 11 in a concert by the VALERIE GILLESPIE QUINTET, featuring trumpeter JOHN DePAOLA.

The Tampa-born brothers, Cannonball and Nat Adderley, found immense popularity with their soulful sound and were known for hits such as “Jive Samba,” “The Work Song,” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” Their music made a big impression on saxophonist Valerie Gillespie, who says “As soon as I heard Cannonball, I thought ‘that’s me – that’s my sound.’ I love every note of Cannonball.”

The 3:00 pm show will be presented by the Tampa Jazz Club and HCC/Ybor City, part of the Visual & Performing Arts Series, in the Mainstage Theater of the Performing Arts Center on the HCC/Ybor campus, just blocks from where Cannonball and Nat Adderley were born.

Valerie Gillespie and John DePaola, who share roots in Pittsburgh but met on bandstands in Florida, have developed a great on-stage rapport in recent years. “We both love to try new things and have lots of fun on the gigs,” Valerie adds. They’ve also gathered a fine band for the Adderley tribute: the quintet will include pianist JUDI GLOVER, bassist PATRICK BETTISON, and drummer DAVE RUDOLPH.

The Adderley Brothers gave us music filled with virtuosity, high spirits, and deep feeling. Don’t miss this chance to hear some of Florida’s best players honor that tradition, in a beautiful Ybor City theater..
