Johnny O'Neal Returns to Miami for Solo Jazz Piano Concert

TIGERTAIL presents
JOHNNY O’NEAL
SOLO PIANO CONCERT

"One of the best kept secrets in New York, Johnny O'Neal sings like Joe Williams and plays piano like Art Tatum ... He can rock a room like a rocker, serenade it like a classic crooner, or swing it like he's on a playground." – Bluenote Jazz Festival program notes

Johnny O'Neal is an American neo-bop jazz pianist and vocalist. His playing ranges from technically virtuosic stride to tender ballad interpretations. Though unique in style, he is influenced by many jazz elders, including Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum. After moving from his hometown of Detroit to Alabama and then to New York City, he performed with Clark Terry in 1981 and landed a regular job at the Blue Note, accompanying such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, Nancy Wilson, Lionel Hampton, Anita O'Day, Russell Malone, Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell. He was a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers for two years from 1982-1983 and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985. Largely self-taught, he doesn't read music, but Johnny has a repertoire of about 1,500 songs stored in his memory. On the recommendation of Oscar Peterson, O'Neal portrayed Art Tatum in the 2004 movie Ray, convincingly recreating Tatum's sound on the song "Yesterdays".

Johnny loves playing solo, and loves playing in South Florida. In the past decade, he has graced the stages of the now-defunct Van Dyke Cafe and Arturo Sandoval's Jazz Club, and sailed on the Jazz Cruise in 2007.

"I'm totally in the moment; I have no set list," he told a reporter at Smalls Jazz Club in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. "I never know what I'm going to play until I get onstage."

Tigertail will present a full season of music, dance and spoken word events to mark its 35th year of cultural work in Miami. In its 35 years, Tigertail has commissioned and presented more than 500 artists in dance, music, theater, film and video, as well as the visual and literary arts. The 35th season will begin with two jazz concerts. It will climax in the month April with the second FLA-FRA Florida/France festival. The Tigertail's teen spoken word team, WordSpeak, will close the season. (See the full schedule, with venues and times at the end of this press release.)

The season will begin on October 11 with a solo concert by neo-bop jazz pianist and vocalist Johnny O'Neal. O'Neal's playing ranges from the technically virtuosic to tender ballad interpretations. Though unique in style, he is influenced by many jazz elders, including Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum and was a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Largely self-taught, Johnny has a repertoire of over 1,500 songs. On the recommendation of Oscar Peterson, O'Neal portrayed Art Tatum in the 2004 movie Ray, convincingly recreating Tatum's sound on the song "Yesterdays".

European chamber jazz comes to the stage on October 25. Dutch trumpeter Eric Vloeimans' latest project, Oliver's Cinema is a trio with an unusual instrumental combination. Vloeimans is considered to be one of the finest and most versatile trumpet players in Europe. Charismatic accordionist Tuur Florizoone explores the instrument's full expressive range. Classically trained cellist Jörg Brinkmann has played in pop bands, theater orchestras and chamber music ensembles. Together, their repertoire veers among jazz, classical, pop and film music. They come to Miami directly from a gig at New York's Blue Note.

Just two weeks later on November 8, Tigertail's annual fundraising party takes on the theme of Beauty and the Beast. Guests will enter through the Miami-Dade County Auditorium's rear loading dock and enjoy food, drink, entertainment, a silent visual art auction curated by Kristen Thiele and a final hour of dancing.

As it has for many years, Tigertail's WordSpeak teen spoken word team will launch their annual book of poems on the first Friday following Christmas, December 26, at Books & Books in Coral Gables. The seven teens will perform the poems that were praised by their peers at the Brave New Voices festival in Philadelphia this past July.

In its second year, ScreenDance Miami will take place from January 22 to 25. The festival highlights Miami-based choreographers, movers and filmmakers who are working with dance on camera. ScreenDance Miami is comprised of screenings, panel discussions, workshops and site-specific installations.

In February, two residencies by noted spoken word artists will benefit teens in Miami-Dade County high schools with workshops, performances and spoken word slams. From February 1 to 6, Andrea Assaf will head up SpeakOut, Tigertail's LGBTQ spoken word program. Then from February 22 to 27, the WordSpeak program will be led by George Yamazawa. Each of these artists will perform at The Betsy Hotel, where they will be in residence in the hotel's Writer's Room – Assaf on February 6, Yamazawa on the 27th.
On February 12 and 13, Carlota Pradera's Bare Bones will return to the stage. Audiences and critics raved about the premiere of this piece in June, 2014. Due to a sell-out at the Sandbox Theater at Miami Theater Center, many were turned away on the last night of that run. Now Miami dance audiences can all experience this powerful piece in the larger, yet intimate, setting of the On.Stage Black Box at Miami-Dade County Auditorium.

Tigertail's FLA-FRA Florida-France festival takes off on the first of April and runs for the entire month. A community-wide fête of concerts, films, poetry reading events and five-minute pop-up Culture Clicks happening throughout Miami at theaters and unexpected locations, FLA-FRA embraces the French spirit of joie de vivre. This is the 2nd year of Tigertail's venture into new work from France and beyond. Each day at sunrise, In Search for Sunrise: France will involve a different person, who will be filmed for five minutes while contemplating the significant French-born artist of their choice. FLA-FRA will include two music and one dance concerts.

On April 11, The Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band plays an all-acoustic concert. This trio continues a Cajun French tradition of Acadian music as genuine as can be found in the 21st century. Marc Savoy (accordion, vocals), wife Ann (guitar, frequent lead vocals), and Michael Doucet of BeauSoleil (fiddle, vocals) comprise the band, which has been performing and recording together since 1977.

Gypsy jazz – known as jazz manouche in France – performed by guitar prodigy Adrien Moignard, comes to the On.Stage Black Box on April 17 and 18. At only 29, Moignard has become the leading guitarist of "le Jazz Hot" tradition, which began with Django Reinhardt in the 1930's. With flawless technique, he has become the hottest performer in Paris' jazz manouche clubs and DjangoFest events throughout the world. He will be accompanied by NYC-based bassist Sam Anning.

FLA-FRA will close with dance from France. On April 24 and 25, Ivory Coast-born dancer/choreographer Nadia Beugré will perform her Quartiers Libres. Within an immersive and interactive visual and aural design, Beugré battles the stifling confines of the stage, oppressive sound, seas of plastic water bottles and an endless, tangled microphone cable. In this world willing to bury her, Beugré's powerful and passionate quest for freedom unfolds, her body and spirit irrevocably changed by the struggle.

Tigertail's 35th season ends with several public readings by the teens from Tigertail's WordSpeak team, who will be heading off to the Brave New Voices spoken word festival next July.
All events taking place at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium On.Stage Black Box will be preceded by an hour of food, drink and fun. Audience members may arrive at 8pm for each event, and the concerts begin at 9pm.
