Community Arts Program 2014 Summer Concert Series Line Up

JULY 3 - THE FOUR FRESHMEN
To many music enthusiasts, the Four Freshmen need no introduction. Starting as college students in 1948, the young group won fame with its renditions of Graduation Day, Poinciana, Day by Day, and It’s a Blue World. Stan Kenton played a major role in advancing the early career of the Four Freshman, and its unique sound strongly influenced other vocal groups, such as Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, and the Beach Boys. Now, more than 65-years later, the names and faces have changed a few times. But, the harmony and legendary sound of the Four Freshmen continue to fascinate audiences worldwide as it also gives new treatments to the Great American Songbook. This concert will take one through the heart of America and into the holiday with a smile…guaranteed!

JULY 17 - CELINO ROMERO, classical guitarist
Celino Romero, grandson of the famous Celedonio Romero, is recognized by countless fans as the youngest member of the renowned Los Romeros, the Romero Guitar Quartet, where Celino is joined by his father, Celin, Uncle Pepe, and cousin Lito. As a soloist, Celino is no less remarkable, performing in numerous recitals and appearances with such orchestras as the San Francisco Symphony, Houston Symphony, Ottawa Symphony, San Diego Symphony, and many others. Celino has certainly earned his title within “The Royal Family of the Guitar.” As with his Uncle Pepe in last year's Summer Concert Series, the 2014 Summer Concert Series brings another unforgettable night of guitar. Here’s to another purely intimate and astoundingly magical evening!

JULY 31 - JAMES CARTER ORGAN TRIO
An artist long intrigued by contrasts and hybrids, James Carter resists comfortable categorization. Born and raised in Detroit, Carter grew up surrounded by music, soaking up everything from funk and fusion to rock, soul, and various strains of acoustic jazz. Carter’s debut recording, 1993’s JC on the Set, announced the arrival of a superlative new talent equally expressive on alto, tenor, and baritone sax (though he’s added several other horns over the years, most importantly, soprano sax). This 2014 Summer Concert Series evening will take one on a festive jazz feast with all the trimmings, featuring Carter on (many) saxes, Gerard Gibbs on Hammond B3(!), and Leonard King on drums. Concertgoers will groove!

AUGUST 14 - LIVINGSTON TAYLOR
The Community Arts Program 2014 Summer Concert Series closes with an unforgettable arrow to heart. Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at the age of thirteen, beginning a forty-year career that has encompassed performance, songwriting and teaching. His creative output has continued unabated, from top-forty hits I Will Be in Love and I’ll Come Running to I Can Dream of You and Boatman, both recorded by his brother James. Livingston’s musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire of upbeat storytelling and touching ballads within his versatile range of folk, pop, gospel, and jazz. Concertgoers will revel in an intimate evening with a versatile performer who will embrace them…from start to finish!
