The good vibe...(Isn't hard to find when Allen Kanovsky is around!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 03/31/14

...from my Saturday night with Jimmy Belize and Nancy continued through Sunday. Anthony Corrado, who plays more instruments than the number of states that have east coast shorelines had Guiseppe Pucci on drums, Paul Banman at the keys and sitting in on guitar, Bob Ullman. This was at Blue Jeans BLUES and my buddy Bill was already there and on his 3 or 4th vodka martini (with olives). I arrived in time to catch Anthony playing acoustic to the tune "Walking On Water". Anthony picks up the trumpet to play "Byebye Blackbird". I have to admit his horn playing has improved --- practice, practice, practice. Bill requested "Yardbird Suite". After Anthony explains how difficult 'be-bop' is to play he picks up the tenor and does it effortlessly. A soulful "Georgia" is next followed by "A Train/C Jam" swing. My dance partner Denise is in the house so naturally --- and we do not leave the floor when the band does a slow BLUES. Mike Michaels usually plays drums but tonight opts to sit in on guitar. They close the 'early show' with "Caravan" giving Guiseppe the usual drummers chance on this tune.

An old pal from Detroit, Ron Anonymous, has returned and with him is our mutual friend Ms. Gheeti. Martine and Jacques, my favorite dance couple are in the house. Denise leaves to go to a birthday party but promises to return. Mitch Goldstein (Hammond w/ Leslie Box), Danny Burger (drums) and Tony Nicolossi (guitar/vocals) will be the rhythm section for Miss Reeeeeta Wilbern. The band opens with a lively BLUES tune which gives me the opportunity to ask Rita to dance. I am 82, a couple of inches taller than 5ft2, carrying about 320 ounces more than I should. Ms. Wilbern is my exact opposite and not only in color. She is probably an inch or so from 6 feet tall. Her weight is appropriate to her size. Her bustline is equivalent to my waist size and is probably 4 decades younger. We look great together. Rita has the habit of calling me her "weekend man". I share that title with 50 or 60 other guys. But I am the only one who wrote a BLUES lyric to the fact----it follows----

Weekend Man
Allen Kanovsky 3/20/13
all rights reserved
I'm your weekend man, I know just what to do.
I am your weekend man, know just what to do
        My weekend hours are devoted
              to always pleasing you .

I won't call on Monday--Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday too
Won't call on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday too
Cocktail hour on Friday is
when I'll talk to you.

Cocktails, dinner, dancing after ten.
Cocktails, dinner and dancing after ten
               It's 2 A.M. when we head home
                           You know what happens then!!!!!

Tony brings bop back to town with "Night In Tunisia". Rita takes the stage to sing the BLUES. Martine and Jacques are on the floor and they are a treat to watch. He is very creative and she is adept at following his moves. My airline attendant friend, Jackie Deering,  has arrived --- with another guy --- Larry. I would have been jealous except that I look younger, better and know that my dancing feet will win the day. Rita sings "My Baby Just Cares For Me". Swing tempo, and my perfect chance to have Jackie join me on the floor to 'show-off' a little. Bill's friend, 'the other Denise' has arrived and when Rita sings "The First One To Say Goodbye" they get up to dance. Miss Rita does this song with no emotion held back. Her soul is revealed with every note she sings. "Unchain My Heart" and Larry has escorted Jackie to the dance floor. I say, unabashedly, "No Contest". She sings "Fever" with sexy vibrance and then she and Tony do "The Thrill Is Gone". Tony does Boz Scaggs' "Low Down". The 'other Denise' joins Martine and Jacques on the floor for a little funk dancing. Mary Allison, Danny Burger's daughter is in the audience and paying close attention to her Dad's playing.

The 2d set starts with Clarence (the OPINIONATED) at the Hammond. We had a heated discussion about "what is JAZZ" just the other night. The tune they played was "On Broadway". If you had been there to hear Clarence play you would need no further definition. His use of the instrument with all its dynamic elements and his imaginative creativity would be all you needed to know about 'what JAZZ is'. Thank you, Clarence.

Jackie and Larry are leaving --- I don't know if it's Jackie having an early flight in the morning or Larry fading in the night. Does that sound like a jealous man? As Jackie leaves, Denise returns to lift my spirits and other things. They play "Rainy Night In Georgia". Denise and I along with Martine and Jacques put on a display of classic & nouveau. BLUES and soul. That's what Rita is all about. "Rock Me Baby", "You Made Me Leave My Happy Home", "I Love My Man", "At Last" and to conclude the set, "Without A Love of My Own".

Rita invites me up to read my "Weekend Man" lyric. I am flatterd.

The last set starts with a very pretty Carmen Medino being invited up to sing. She opens with "The Shadow of Your Smile' and then a lovely "Besame Mucho". Rita joins her for "You Make Me Feel Brand New". You want to clap and tap and shake your booty --- well listen to Rita and the band do "Mustang Sally" oooweee,

'ride Sally ride'. Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Pride and Joy" done in shuffle time and swinging into "Don't Tell Your Mama" then riding it out all the way "Superstition."

As I leave my mind is filled with "the sound of music" my legs are throbbing with the feel of the rhythms and my hearts says "Thank you Lord for the blessings you have bestowed upon me".

Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"

Rusty Wright Band tapped for Blues Hall of Fame® - Coming to Florida soon!

Sadson Music recording artist The Rusty Wright Band was inducted March 19, 2014 into the Blues Hall of Fame® e-museum as a Master Blues Band.
Left to right: Robert Manzitti, Dennis Bellinger, Laurie LaCross-Wright, Marc Friedman, Rusty Wright
The Rusty Wright Band (who will be touring Florida June, 2014) is comprised of guitarists Rusty Wright and Laurie LaCross-Wright of Burton, Michigan, bassist Dennis Bellinger of Flint, Michigan, keyboardist Robert Manzitti of Southgate, Michigan, and Marc Friedman, of West Bloomfield Twp., Michigan.

The Rusty Wright Band has earned international recognition for their distinctive "bluescentric" sound and live shows, which have been described as “an energized blues storm.” The band will be headlining a number of festivals across the country this summer and they will also be sharing billing at other events with artists like Charlie Musselwhite, Buddy Guy and Robert Randolph. The group has just begun to record their fifth album and a European tour is in the works for late autumn.

“The Rusty Wright Band is a wonderfully satisfying, high-energy, rocking, original music show band,” said  Michigan Blues Hall Of Fame Ambassador Claudette Harrell-Manning, welcoming the group as the organization’s newest inductees. An official induction celebration honoring a full slate of inductees will take place later this spring in Detroit.

“We appreciate this honor,” said Rusty Wright.  “It is a very nice feeling to have your music and your efforts acknowledged by your peers. As a fellow performer and recording artist, Claudette understands the challenges, trials and triumphs of this business and for all the years we’ve known her she has been genuine in encouraging and supporting the blues musicians she crosses paths with. She’s an ideal blues ambassador.” Known in blues circles as “Sweet Claudette,” Harrell Manning is also a 2013 Blues Hall of Fame Master Blues Artist inductee.
Rusty Wright's musical sensibilities are firmly entrenched in the realm of contemporary rock-tinged blues yet his impeccable guitar work also hints of iconic blues legends like the late Freddy King, demonstrating a style honed by time while still embodying the exuberance and playfulness of a fearless youngster. Rather than regenerating the old, deep grooves that have become ruts, Wright and his terrific band moves the music along nicely in the 21st century, tapping into the muse and spirit of the classic Southern blues rock bands to deliver an adrenalized fusing of Texas and Chicago-style blues and swing, spiced with a pinch or two of Southern rock, and delivered with just the right amount of Detroit swagger.

The band's fourth album, This, That & the Other Thing received a Blues 411 Jimi Award for Best Contemporary Release of 2013 and the album was also nominated for three WYCE Jammies - Album of the Year, Best Blues/Soul Album and Listener's Choice Award for Best Regional Album.

Their albums have reached Top 10 on the Billboard regional chart, Top 5 on Relix Magazine's Jam Band chart, Top 150 on the Americana Music Association chart, #21 on the Living Blues Chart, and numerous appearances on the iTunes, Amazon, and Roots Music Report charts. Their music has reached listeners in more than 100 countries and their latest album has been added to more than 70,000 digital jukeboxes across North America.

The virtual Hall of Fame® is divided into three major categories: Legendary Blues Artists;  Master BluesArtists/Master Blues Bands; and Great Blues Artists/Great Blues Bands. As a newly-minted “Master Blues Band” The Rusty Wright Band joins the company of notable blues artists like Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout, Tommy Castro, Bobby Rush, Jonny Lang, Other Michigan Blues artists who have been inducted into the BHOF as Master Blues Artists include Bobby Murray, Larry McCray, RJ Spangler, James Cloyd Jr, Howard Glazer, Sir Mack Rice and Johnny Bassett.

Established in 1999, The Blues Hall of Fame e-Museum is a free and open international organization centered around the belief that recognizing worthy Blues Artists should be open, transparent and conducted by other Blues artists, fans, and the general public. The organization’s mission is to present and preserve the past, present and future history of Blues music, a unique American heritage art form, by inducting, promoting and honoring Legendary Blues Artists, Master Blues Artists, and the Great Local Blues Artists of the world. www.blueshalloffame.com
