April 13, 2013: Jazz Project, 8pm

Ed Calle

Saxophonist Ed Calle is one of the most sought-after instrumentalists in the business. Known for his versatility, Calle easily shifts between bebop, contemporary and Latin jazz, and pop. He appears on Grammy-award-winning albums by Frank Sinatra, Vicky Carr, Arturo Sandoval, and Jon Secada, as well as on numerous television and motion picture soundtracks. He also has recorded and performed around the world with such artists as Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, Michael Bolton, Bobby Caldwell, and Rhianna. Among his many solo recordings, Ed Calle Plays Santana garnered a Latin Grammy Award nomination in 2005. His latest release In the Zone features original compositions and jazz standards and earned a Latin Grammy nomination.  Now he returns to Arts Garage for a performance that promises to pack a punch and appeal to fans of various genres.

Join us at our 2nd annual fundraising Gala where we reflect on the past, celebrate the present and anticipate our future! Sip cocktails and sample delicacies from some of Delray’s finest restaurants, and enjoy the authentic old-school soul and blues eight-piece band featuring Detroit recording stars Little Jake Mitchell and the Soul Searchers and an energetic, creative parade of special guest performers reflecting the vast array of performing arts that have enriched the South Florida urbanscape since the Arts Garage opened its doors.  All funds raised will benefit the educational initiatives, which allow us to reach out to this and the next generation of artists and the innovative programming you’ve come to expect from what Palm Beach Illustrated has called “the most diverse and avant-garde art incubator in the County.”

Dan Miller & Lew Del Gatto

Dan Miller built his reputation touring and recording with Harry Connick Jr., Wynton Marsalis and Maynard Ferguson, working as a jazz trumpet player in NYC since 1991. He brings together a tremendous group of musicians he’s worked with through the years including NYC bassist Ben Wolfe (Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall), tenor saxophonist Lew Del Gatto, pianist Doug Bickel (Arturo Sandoval), guitarist Dan Heck and drummer Ron Hefner for a hard swinging evening of the music of Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie and the critically acclaimed compositions of Ben Wolfe.  Miller teams up with saxophonist Lew Del Gatto who spent over two decades (1975 – 2005) on the stage of Saturday Night Live as part of the SNL band. The duo’s fat, brassy sound is complemented by the dulcet be-bop tones of bassist Ben Wolfe, who has played alongside Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr., and Diana Krall.

DOLPH COSTELLANO

Considered one of the top jazz pianists in South Florida, Castellano is prominent in the context of an ensemble while creating his unique magic on the piano. He has performed with a who’s who of local and international jazz stars, including Woody Herman, Sam Donahue, Jimmy Dorsey, Art Moony, Ralph Marterie, Charlie Spivak and Cy Zentner. He also worked and recorded with Ira Sullivan, Pete Minger, Chubby and Duffy Jackson, and played with Dizzy Gillespie on his 60th birthday, also worked with Lou Donaldson, Donald Byrd and many others. He was also pianist in residence for the Boca and Palm Beach Pops Symphonic Orchestras.

May 11, 2013: Jazz Project, 8pm

Oriente

Fusing Cuban roots with New Orleans-style jazz, Caribbean and Brazilian influences and conceived by Cuban-born guitarist/composer Eddy Balzola, the group’s signature sound features funky guitar, driven tumbaos, blazing harmonic brass, and explosive Afro-Latin percussion.  Tired of touring with reggae, Latin, and show bands, Balzola wanted to create a group that celebrated a sound all its own. He joined the talents of Stuart King (trumpet/percussion), William Paredes (trombone), Yoel Del Sol (multi-percussion), Pepe Aparicio (bass) and Orlando Machado (drums/percussion) and created an inimitable sound that rouses audiences and leaves them toe tapping and begging for more.

May 18, 2013: Garage Blues, 8pm

Doug Deming & Dennis Gruenling

Eastside Detroit native Doug Deming, now hailing from Florida’s Gulf Coast, has garnered widespread attention for his deft guitar work and notable writing. Paired with premier harp man and touring partner Dennis Gruenling, and backed by the new Jewel Tones line-up of Andrew Gohman on upright and Fender bass, and Devin Neel on drums, the group has garnered recognition as one of the premiere blues acts in the country.

Tiempo Libre

“Simply put, the orchestra’s modern take on Afro-Cuban roots blended with Latin jazz is second to none.” Miami New Times

The seven members of Tiempo Libre met as teenagers at one of Cuba’s premier conservatories, where they mastered the critical skills necessary to play classic Cuban music. During a time in Cuba when listening to American music was forbidden, the boys crowded around a homemade radio and listened to the beats of Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. After emigrating to the United States, the men formed Tiempo Libre, a band that celebrates the best of Latin and American music. Since their inception, they have garnered three Grammy nominations, the first for their debut album Bach in Havana, which melds classical tunes by Johann Sebastian Bach with the soul-stirring rhythms of salsa, merengue, and cha-cha. The group has since been nominated for two more Grammy awards, and has toured and performed extensively, including a performance on the ABC television hit Dancing with the Stars. Tiempo Libre is the picture of musical innovation, and is one of the hottest young bands in both Latin and contemporary American music today.
