A party by any other name...

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 4/21/13

is a party. A Gala is another matter. A gala is a super party, just like the one last night at Arts Garage in Delray Beach. They were celebrating 2 events. Their 2nd anniversary and the good news about being able to maintain their residence at the location. Folks "dressed up", fabulous food, wines and music, music, music.

The food and service was donated by all the best local restaurants including--Papas Tapas--Solita--Buddha Sky Bar--The Olive Taste--Brule--Crepes By the Sea--Deck 84--75 Main--Union--3d & 3d--City Oysters and Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza. During the cocktail hour two seniors from Atlantic High Schools music program entertained the guests. Zoe Fromer (18) sang accompanied by Andrew Forman (17) on guitar. Zoe will continue her education in the JAZZ program at UM. Andrew is off to The Apple to attend the New School. Congratulations to both. While people were being seated, Giani Bianchini played piano and sang all the old songs. Giani  leads the Piano Department at Arts Garage school. Food, food, and more food. Tempting finger foods, pastas, meatballs, duck confit, shrimp in couscous, crepes. I am not a gourmet. I am a "chazer". Translated from Yiddish that means a person who has a tendency to overeat. In plain English a "pig".

I partook of a few items and then continued with a few more and then a few more. I did say something about the freely poured wines. Suddenly marching through the doors, "The Bad Apples". A tuba led the way followed by 2 trombones, alto sax and drums. They wended their way to the stage and played some "Dixieland" numbers, including "Down By the Riverside". The featured band for the night was "Little Jake and the Soul Searchers". They play a rocking style BLUES and it didn't take long for the guests to get up and dance. The band has been together for over 3 years and has had only one change in that time. Schelvin Robinson(trumpet) joined them 6 months ago. Little Jake has been performing since he was 5 and played his first professional job at 12 with B.B. King at Robert's Show Lounge in Chicago. His favorite lyric "If loving is wrong, I don't want to be right."

During the break a young lady (7) playing banjo, sang a song, "I Belong With You" Her name is Maya Cumar and she delighted us all. Little Jake did "Who's Makin' Love", a song recorded by Johnnie Taylor in 1968, and drummer, Hal Saylor did
Willie Dixon's "300 Pounds of Heavenly Joy". I danced a couple with my buddy Bette.

It was growing late. They still were playing music and still serving food. That is the difference between a party and a GALA. If I were you I would mark my calendar with a "save the date" for next year. Thanks to all the volunteers, staff and board members for providing a "Night To Remember".

Arts Garage has to raise 2.5 "large" and I mean capital "L" in the next 2 and a half years. It is a major undertaking and only we, you and I and all music lovers can make it happen. Let the folks at Arts Garage know that you want to help!
