3 Cohens (Anat, Avishai and Yuval) Sextet

"To the ranks of the Heaths of Philadelphia, the Joneses of Detroit and the Marsalises of New Orleans, fans can now add The 3 Cohens of Tel Aviv."
— All About Jazz

The best jazz groups are made up of kindred spirits, but the rare family band has something more – an intuitive feel for each other that goes beyond words and gestures into a kind of telepathy. The 3 Cohens are that sort of uncommon collective, a trio of siblings from Tel Aviv, Israel – saxophonist/clarinetist Anat, trumpeter Avishai, and soprano saxophonist Yuval – whose sense of improvisational interplay is both uncannily fluent and wonderfully, infectiously warm. Along with performing on stages the world over, the 3 Cohens record together on Anzic Records, the most recent being the acclaimed Family that features the three Israeli horn players in league with swinging New Yorkers who are their touring rhyt hm section: pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. Family underscores the fact that even with the individual careers each of the Cohens pursues to increasing international success, there is something special about the music the three make together. "We can talk without talking," says Anat, the middle child. "Often, we don't even have to look at each other onstage. We have such history together that we feel each other through the music."

Yuval, Anat and Avishai Cohen grew up in Tel Aviv under the same roof and attended the same schools, with the common environment helping to shape close musical tastes, approaches and ideas. The three studied classical music at the esteemed Thelma Yellin High School for the Arts, and the Jaffa Music Conservatory. While their backgrounds included some symphonic orchestral playing, it was jazz that soon captured their imaginations.. Through the World Scholarship Tour, each of the Cohens attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Post-graduation the trio formed a family sextet while concurrently forming their own bands and playing in a plethora of bands and guesting on albums.

Acclaim for 3 Cohens Sextet was immediate. According to All About Jazz, "What gives 3 Cohens a certain edge is the simpatico they share, extending beyond merely being siblings; it involves all three sharing the common bond of music from an early age, and the kind of comfort level and intuition that can only come from playing together for many years. The result is a front line that finds pleasure in the subtlest nuances. While there are hints of their ethnic heritage, this music is clearly rooted in contemporary post-bop… Throughout, a joyfulness pervades these performances." The New York Times enthused over the group's "family sound" and "intuitive counterpoint" before pointing out the players' individual qualities: "Anat has emerged as one of the best clarinet players in jazz, with a warm and singing tone; Avishai can play bebop and ballad lines and outer-limit trumpet sounds with tireless fluency; and Yuval has a full and relaxed sound on soprano."

Fred Hersch Trio
A superior soloist, accompanist and interpreter of ballads, Fred Hersch began to play the piano at age four and composed and improvised by seven. Following graduation from the New England Conservatory in 1977, the Cincinnati native moved to New York and worked as a sideman with the likes of Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Jane Ira Bloom and formed a long-term working relationship with Janis Siegel, while also leading his own groups. He has been amazingly prolific and largely unsung creator of beautiful compositions and reconstructions. His live solo album Alone at the Vanguard received two Grammy nominations in 2011.

It is helpful to understand that “hollow body” refers to a guitar construction! The band features two guitarists - the other being the redoubtable Mike Stern - who were Gary Burton protégés and also played in 1980s iterations of the Miles Davis band, giving both bona fide fusion credentials. Scofield, or “Sco,” as he is universally known, has influenced jazz since the late 70’s and is still going strong. Sco is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post- bop jazz, funk-edged electronica, and even R & B. He is comfortable in several idioms and blurs the lines at will creating a distinctive musical style and personality.

May 11, 2013 – 8:00 PM
A supreme trumpeter and flugelhornist, Tom Harrell creates a seemingly endless flow of bubbling, intricate ideas conveyed with an almost serene delivery. Neither aggressively avant-garde, nor riveted in the past, Tom Harrell’s music simply celebrates sonic beauty for its own sake. Praised for his pure melodic brilliance, he is widely recognized as one of the most creative and uncompromising jazz instrumentalists and composers of our time. For over four decades, close to 300 recordings, and numerous accolades, Tom manages to stay fresh. His quintet has shown remarkable continuity and cohesion. It is a great band.

June 8, 2013 – 8:00 PM
There are no obvious parallels in the music industry. Chicago native Kurt Elling is the greatest male jazz singer – or just jazz singer – of our time. In a career spanning 16 years, Elling has risen to international prominence as a jazz artist and creative singer. An intellectual superman, he is a master of “vocalese” and scatting. Remarkably, each of his nine albums was nominated for a Grammy® Award and Dedicated to You won in 2010. He is a perennial critics poll-winner and his quartet tours the world, performing to critical acclaim in Europe, Asia, CanadaIsrael, and Australia. This will be Mr. Elling’s fifth performance for South Florida JAZZ.
