May 10, 2012
Two Shows: 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

The Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra
Plays the Music of
Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn
Featuring violinist Glenn Basham

Glenn Basham (violin and harmonica)
Lew Del Gatto (tenor saxophone)
Dan Miller (trumpet)
Jerry Stawski (piano)
Mike Harvey (drums)
and Kevin Mauldin (bass)

Duke Ellington stands alongside Louis Armstrong as the most important figure in the history of jazz music. As a composer, pianist and bandleader for over fifty years (1924-1974) he was without peer. The Duke Ellington Orchestra had the perfect blend of blues and swing with Ellington's sophisticated arrangements showcasing the incredible masters who were featured in his band: Bubber Miley, Ben Webster, Jimmy Blanton, Johnny Hodges, Rex Stewart, Jimmy Hamilton, Cootie Williams, Paul Gonsalves, Clark Terry, Lawrence Brown and Harry Carney. Ellington is acknowledged as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century and just by looking at a small sampling of his work (many co-written with partner Billy Strayhorn) one sees jazz history unfold before him (Take the A Train, Black and Tan Fantasy, Mood Indigo, Satin Doll, Caravan, Don't Get Around Much Anymore, Do Nothing 'til You Hear From Me, In A Sentimental Mood, Sophisticated Lady, In A Mellotone).

Violinist Glenn Basham possesses a magnificent tone, dazzling technique and brilliant musicianship which allows him to create joyous, soaring improvisations. Glenn is a dynamic soloist who will bring his own highly personal artistry to his interpretation of Ellington's music. He has a B.M. degree from the North Carolina School of the Arts and an M.M. degree from Indiana University and is the concertmaster of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been a member of the artist faculty at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami since 1992.  He also serves as the first violinist in the Bergonzi String Quartet, which is the quartet-in-residence at the Frost School of Music. Basham, a native of Washington D.C., previously played with the Detroit Symphony under Antal Dorati and was a member of the Chester String Quartet.

UPCOMING PERFORMANCE

June 7, 2012
Two Shows: 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

The Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra
Plays the Music of Count Basie

Featuring saxophonist Lew Del Gatto

Glenn Basham (violin and harmonica)
Lew Del Gatto (tenor saxophone)
 Dan Miller (trumpet)
Jerry Stawski (piano)
Mike Harvey (drums)
and Paul Shewchuk (bass)

The Count Basie Orchestra was the most swinging band in the history of jazz. The band exemplified the 'Kansas City Sound': raw, energetic and blues-based. It was a unique combination of Basie's elegant piano style, exciting arrangements (One O'Clock Jump, Moten Swing, April In Paris) and a swinging rhythm section driving world class soloists. The tenor saxophone soloists who defined the Count Basie sound read like a history of the instrument: Lester Young, Herschel Evans, Chu Berry, Don Byas, Wardell Grey, Illinois Jacquet, Lucky Thompson, Paul Quinichette, Billy Mitchell, Lockjaw Davis, Frank Foster, Frank Wess and Jimmy Forrest.

Saxophonist Lew Del Gatto has a big, beautiful, warm sound and swinging style that places him firmly in the tradition of the great Basie tenor men. Lew has been a dynamic figure in the music scene for over 40 years. His versatility and knowledgeable comprehension of musical art-form was the basis for a stellar career. He has been involved with jingles, films, jazz and television. He was a saxophonist with the Saturday Night Live band from 1975-2005. He has recorded for such artists as Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, Harry Connick Jr and the Brecker Brothers. Lew has appeared with many giants in the music world, including Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Liza Minelli, Buddy Rich, Herbie Hancock, Phil Woods and the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra.

I really don't know what to make of this, as I only hear people crying poor...poor funding, poor attendance, poor support...and here is a %10 increase over past year?

PRESS RELEASE RECEIVED TODAY:

Sarasota, FL: The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall has just completed one of the most successful seasons in the theater’s forty-two year history, surpassing last season’s sales. This year’s sales were $6,207,790 and 108,737 tickets sold, while last year’s sales were $5,559,227 and 99,946 tickets sold. This amount consists of Van Wezel presented Main Stage performances only, and does not take into account local companies, event rentals, and Van Wezel Schooltime performances.

The theater was delighted to open this year with brand new seats, supported in part by a grant from the Selby Foundation, and pleased to be the first performing arts venue in Sarasota to offer a Hearing Loop, generously sponsored by Sertoma Sarasota. Season highlights included Sarasota debuts of Dolly Parton whose performance was underscored with multiple standing ovations and a presentation of a key to the city by Mayor Atwell, and two phenomenal sellout performances of Jerry Seinfeld. Triumphant return sellouts  or near sellouts included RAIN, Tim Conway, Willie Nelson, Cats, Moody Blues, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, B.B. King, Fiddler on the Roof , and new shows including Straight No Chaser, Celtic Thunder, Masters of Illusion, ABBA The Concert and Mandy Patinkin & Patti LuPone, among many others which helped to round out the successful season.  2011-2012 ended on a high note with two back-to-back sellouts of Chicago the band and Yanni.

Van Wezel Executive Director, Mary Bensel said, “It was simply a phenomenal year for us all. I have so many memories, starting with the multi-talented Dolly Parton, Audra McDonald who went directly from enchanting our audience to Broadway to star in Porgy and Bess, the Alvin Ailey company’s exquisite dancing, and  Diana Krall—who came to us from performing on the Grammy’s with Paul McCartney. Frankly, I could go on and on. Our season was so magical and our audience so gracious-- it is a joy to welcome these world –class performers to Sarasota. Our education program, which is dear to the staff’s heart, also thrived this year, and we look forward to our Friday Fest free concert series on the Bay Front, this summer. None of this would be possible without our audience, staff, subscribers, volunteers, sponsors, City family and the Van Wezel Foundation.”

Jeffrey S. Willey of the Smokin' Torps checks in on the state of the blues in Florida

The Torp Report
Blues Entertainment News
 __________________________________________________________________________

Hey Blues Fans!

For anyone that missed the recent OBBS membership & CD release event you truly missed one of the best blues bands in all of the state of Florida.  Doug Deming & the Jewel Tones w/ Madison Slim simply tore it up!

The economy must truly suck based on the low turn out at this and many other blues events.  Hate to say it, but traditional live blues perfromance is quickly becoming something of the past in central Florida and as part time promotor it's next to impossible to put a positive spin on "things" and even more difficult to put together a profitable or break even business plan for producing such events.  Simply put...I'm retiring from the blues promotion business for a while and concentrating more on performing.  Please go out and support Zaida her Zshowz efforts as she's bringing some great shows to town.

Speaking of performing...

Friday night brings the Torps back to McCall's Tavern at the Villages in Lady Lake right in the same building as the bowling alley.  One of my personal favorite venues which always turns out to be a great time.  Steve Holt will be playing baritone & tenor saxophone.

Keep checking our website for more info.

That's all for now, but remember to get up off the couch and go out and support some live blues music!

Blues Regards,

The Smokin' Torpedoes

short, sweet, and hot w/ allen kanovsky

Submitted by Al Kanovsky, 4/25/12
When I say those three words, short, sweet and, hot, I am not talking about my high school sweetheart. What I am describing is a guy who is featured on tenor sax with the Bobby Nathan Band. The rest of the guys are not chopped liver either. Muggy Doo(B3) Andy G(drums) Steve B(bass guitar)Bobby Nathan(guitar/vocals) out front. Doug Treen is the reed man. Doug's blowing is reminiscent of the early days of honkers and bar walkers.

Guys like Jimmy Forrest, Cozy Eggleston and Paul Bascomb. Exciting and fun to listen to. Having this band backing your solos does no harm but inspires Doug to play his best. The  "Open Mic Tuesday Jam" at Fish Tales  brings out the best blues artists South Florida has. This week we had the pleasure of listening to, Sistah Mary Beth(blues vocals) and Patrick Fiones(guitar-B3-and anything else he could get his hands on). There were lots of others. I am sorry I didn't get all the names. I will try harder next time. Let me conclude with; this is no ordinary "open mic". Everyone who gets up on that stage can really PLAY!!!!

music makes the world go 'round w/ allen kanovsky

Submitted by Al Kanovsky, 4/24/12

Talk about going around town in nothin' flat. Flo and I have been on what seems to have been a road trip. But well worth the miles in exchange for the sounds. Wednesday night Nicole Henry returned from her tour of Russia to appear at BJB's. As tired as she must have been from the long flight earlier that day, she put on a fabulous frock and sang her heart out for an appreciative CROWD. The rhythm section was the band she played her first JAZZ gigs with in the not so long ago. Danny Burger (drums)Mike Orta(piano) and Paul Shewchuk(bass). Thursday, almost right around the corner at Kitchen 305(Newport Hotel) Maria Rivas also returning from Europe played with a great quartet including Jamie Ousley(bass). Friday we bounced around from here and there including Satchmo  and ending up with Ike Woods Revue at BJB. Saturday, we joined Rick & Fran Katz for a concert at the Miami-Dade Cultural Center. This is a must go to venue. The theater holds 900 and is architecturally magnificent. Superior acoustics and sound system make the listening experience even better. The Turtle Island String Quartet were performing a tribute to the music of John Coltrane. What music lover could miss it?

Truth be told it will take a little time for me to become comfortable with the voicing of a traditional classical string quartet playing "the Trane" charts.

On the way home, after all it was only around 11P.M., we stopped at Gamaroffs on
Federal Highway
to catch the last set of Anthony Corrado and Lourdes. A bunch of folks hanging out late, clappin' their hands and tappin' their toes.

Thank the Lord for Sunday. Sleep late and then music, music, music.   First to Fish Tale for Patrick Fiornes and some blues. Then to BJBs for Barbara Van, Mike Orta and Linc Lacky and their Sunday Jam. We scooted up to Commercial, where a German restaurant we like had set up temporary service, for dinner. Back to BJBs for the American debut performance of Nanami Marikawa. The room was abound with many well known South Florida JAZZ stars. Wendy Pedersen and her guitarist husband, Lisanne Lyons, Rick Harris, SAMM, MJCs Rick Katz. All of the aforementioned (except Rick Katz, thankfully)gracefully took the stage during the 2d set. Ms. Marikawa captured the audience with her very first song. Her rhythmic sense and proficiency at bending melodic lines made for an astounding performance. Please excuse the superlatives but they are all well deserved. Nanami was surrounded by all the talent you could fit on that small stage. Carlomag(nific)o Araya(drums), DOCTOR Jamie Ousley(bass) and Jim Gasior "Jimmy the Jammer G" on piano. Wendy, Lisanne, Rick and SAMM helped make the evening an exceptional night of hand clappin' and toe tappin'. Flo and I are taking Monday off to sharpen our ear drums for the rest of the week. Don't forget the tribute to Benny Goodman with Peplowski and the South Florida Jazz Orchestra coming up soon. Get your tickets early.

Blues legend Lucky Peterson headlines Bikini Blues Bash April 28, 2012 in Treasure Island, FL

Bikinis, Blues, & You

HEADLINERS

Lucky & Tamara Peterson
Sarasota Slim
Little Jake Mitchell and the Soul Searchers
Betty Fox and the Dirty Bastards
Charlie Morris
Paul Anthony Band

Lucky Peterson, one of the preeminent blues performers of the last half century, heads the impressive lineup for Treasure Island’s inaugural Bikini Blues Bash, presented by the City of Treasure Island Parks & Recreation Department, the Beach Beacon, Suncoast Surf Shop and the Suncoast Blues Society. The 10-hour blues bash happens Saturday, April 28, 2012, on the Treasure Island beach at 104th & Gulf Boulevard, Treasure Island, Florida, beginning at noon.

A child prodigy in the seventies, Lucky Peterson made his name through his electrifying live performances in the 80’s and 90’s, and is now a true blues veteran. St. Petersburg’s Sarasota Slim, having worked and toured with Lucky back in the day, backs up Lucky Peterson featuring Tamara Peterson, with his band at 7pm.

The Bikini Blues Bash goes old-school at 5:30pm with Little Jake Mitchell and the Soul Searchers, an authentic soul and blues eight-piece band out of Gainesville, Florida. Little Jake grew up in Tampa, and as a teenager sang in traveling road shows that included the likes of B.B. King, Sam Cooke and James Brown.

Tampa’s Betty Fox & the Dirty Bastards blow the roof off every important venue they play - good thing they’re outdoors at the Bash. But soul is what it’s all about, and over the band’s solid, salty backbeats, between Josh Nelms’ articulate guitar solos, Ms. Fox proves her melodious mettle when she often casts aside the microphone and sings to us anyway, easily felt and heard over the full power of her band mates. She’s that good. They play at 3pm. Treasure Island’s Charlie Morris has been kicking around the Florida Bluescoast longer than he cares to admit, but he knows how to pick a guitar and make it sing, with a down-home rock ‘n’ roll blues quality to his wryly original songs. Charlie takes the stage at 1:15pm, after an opening set at noon from Gulfport’s favorite bluesmiths, the Paul Anthony Band.

And those bikinis we speak of? You might see a few at the stand-up paddleboard demonstration from the Suncoast Surf Shop around 4:30, or at the free high-energy Zumba® fitness demonstration on the beach. Throughout the festival grounds, enjoy tasty seafood, barbeque, island cuisine, and other culinary treats. Festival vendors also include arts & crafts. Beer and wine are also available.

All-day Bikini Blues Bash parking directly on the beach is $10. Parking entrance is at 112th &
Gulf Boulevard
, across the street from the Waffle House. Info at 727-547-4575 ext. 237 and at www.mytreasureisland.org.

Jazz & Blues Florida Internet Radio - In Europe? Around the world?

Attn: Florida jazz recording artists:

I have been approached by the leading internet jazz station/platform in Europe to present a show based on artists that I feel are worthy of representing the jazz scene here in Florida. I would need to present 24 tracks each month in a mix of new and old recordings.

Although there are many distribution platforms out there on the web, and probably many more that used to be out there that failed, this one has the quality, substance and presence to make it worth looking into much deeper. This is of course a non-income producing undertaking – mostly an expense of time, but it is being considered due to the potential exposure for Jazz & Blues Florida and the Florida scene overall.

What I need to know from you is if you would be willing to participate by providing the music that would become potential program content.  I can’t commit to the programming without knowing that I will have the content to create the show around.

Would you contribute your music?  Please let me know your thoughts on this, as I am relying heavily on this poll to determine if I should allocate the resources to go this route at this time. Please leave a comment below.

If you DID NOT receive an email message to visit this blog, please email me at Charlie@JazzBluesFlorida.com to make sure we are connected and you stay in the loop on this and other Florida music matters.

As a closing note, I can tell you that the world is already interested in what is going on here in Florida.  Our web sites have visitors from over 100 countries each year (over 50 MONTHLY!) and our email list reaches every continent, except Antarctica.

Thanks!

The non-profit organization Waves For Change Alliance, Inc., will be hosting its inaugural benefit concert, Ocean of Light And Sound, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Miami for the beneficiary Margo Gignac and her family on April 30, 2012 commencing at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7p.m.).
Ocean of Light and Sound will be the inaugural benefit concert to raise funds for the rehabilitation of Margo, a 21 year old ballet dancer who was involved in a devastating car accident in December 2010 that left her a quadriplegic.  Her single mother was forced to quit her full-time job to become Margo’s caretaker, while also raising her two other children. They do not have the means to continue to fund Margo's rehabilitation, which all the experts agree is necessary within the first two years from the injury for optimum recovery.  Everyone at Waves For Change Alliance, along with recording artists, singer songwriters, film makers and other members of the arts community have come together in a short period of time to volunteer their services and talents towards the Ocean of Light and Sound concert to assist with Margo's rehabilitation.
Ocean of Light and Sound will feature many of South Florida’s finest performing talent, including co-founder Laurence Elder as the musical director, Nicole Henry, Wendy Pedersen, Jamie Ousley, Carlomagno Araya, and Mike Orta, as well as special guest appearances by internationally acclaimed guest stars.  The event will be catered by gourmet food truck vendors and other sponsors.  Tickets range from $55.00 to $225.00 and can be ordered online at http://www.wavesfca.org/.  The concert will be broadcasted world-wide through live stream video.  All proceeds from the concert will go towards the rehabilitation of Margo.
Waves For Change Alliance was created through a series of events that started with the desire to help Margo.  The founders, Esperanza Segarra and Laurence Elder, joined together to help a fellow member of their community and performer in the arts that was in need.  Thereafter, Esperanza, who is also an attorney, decided that the most efficient way to help, while also fulfilling a lifetime commitment and dream, was to form a nonprofit organization.  The result was Waves For Change Alliance.  The organization “is based on the concepts of global community and “paying it forward,” where people come together from around the world to raise funds through the collaboration of the arts community” said the co-founder and president, Esperanza.  The events presented by Waves For Change Alliance are “for the benefit of one cause that will continue to create waves of positive change that transcend all boundaries.”
Other close friends committed to the mission of Waves For Change Alliance quickly joined the organization.  The directors, officers and volunteers of Waves For Change Alliance have united to raise awareness and assistance in positively changing our global community.  The organization is composed of a volunteer network of individuals that reside in different regions of the world, including France, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Iran, and the United States, from an array of backgrounds in all fields of work with a focus and love for the arts.  Though their backgrounds in life vary, it was a common goal and life-time commitment that brought them together.  Ocean of Light and Sound is the first of many more collaborations for a cause presented by Waves For Change Alliance.
For more information about Waves For Change Alliance, the Ocean of Light and Sound benefit concert, or Margo Gignac, please visit http://www.wavesfca.org/.  You may also contact Esperanza Segarra by email at Esperanza.Segarra@wavesfca.org., or phone at (305) 794-0816.
