Florida Jazz Drummer Announces Novel Release

It's not just about jazz music and musicians.
It's a fantasy told from the point of view of the space
that reacts to the vibrations of sound that takes place
within it.
The reader will have to employ imagination and accept
the premise from a metaphysical standpoint that
THIS JAZZ ROOM communicates away from what is normal
and perceptible senses. It is the personification of the space.
It is cerainly captivated by the vibrations of the music in the space,
in addition to various tangible and abstract realities that are also
present there.

Available at Kindle:
http://www.amazon.com/THIS-JAZZ-ROOM-ebook/dp/B009XUVCLE/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1351736551&sr=1-1&keywords=This+jazz+room

Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ & Blues goes PRO!

Zephyrhills Annual Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ & Blues
Now a Florida State Championship BBQ Contest

Zephyrhills, FL (October 29, 2012)The Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce Signature Event - Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ & Blues festival – has experienced three consecutive years of growth and positive returns to the local community. Going in to the 3rd Annual event held last Saturday, organizers received a formal proclamation from Florida State Representative and Speaker Designee Will Weatherford declaring BBQ & Blues a State Championship Barbecue Contest.

There are only approximately 20 BBQ contests in the State of Florida – including Kansas City BBQ Society and Florida BBQ Association sanctioned contests – that carry this distinction. The news brought smiles to the weary faces of organizers who had battled rain showers and gusty winds during venue prep Thursday and Friday. The news was received with cheers from cook-off teams at Friday night’s Team Meeting. Pros in for the weekend’s competition knew the ante had just been upped. The Grand Champion of a State Championship BBQ contest receives a draw for the granddaddy contest of them all – the Jack Daniels World Championships held in Lynchburg, TN, and this year’s Pro division contest was now a qualifier for the draw.

“This is a huge boost for us and we are humbled and grateful to Florida House Speaker Designee Will Weatherford for supporting our community,” said executive director Vonnie Mikkelsen. The good news couldn’t have come at a better time. “We have such an overwhelming number of community partners, supporters, and volunteers that help make this event happen. It was only a little over two years ago that we were talking about just a “little” idea.  This tribute is for all of those who have believed in us from the beginning. I am so thrilled to put this in their hand!”

Participation and attendance at this year’s event brought in an estimated 5,000 people, and another 20% increase in overall participation over last year.

Proceeds from the event benefit services selected local youth and education programs and a number of community services and programs sponsored by the chamber.

Results from Saturday’s Competition:
PROFESSIONAL DIVISION
GRAND CHAMPION: Swamp Boys (Winter Haven, FL)
RESERVE CHAMPION: Big Papa’s Country Kitchen (Naples, FL)
BACKYARD DIVISION
GRAND CHAMPION: Bettern Store Bot (Bushnell, FL)
Bahr’s Smokin’ Butts (Zephyrhills, FL) was selected “The People’s Choice” for all around favorite team.
For a complete list of contest results, contact the chamber office:
(813) 782-1913 or news@zephyrhillschamber.org

The Zephyrhills 3rd Annual Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ and Blues Fest is brought to you by the Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce in Partnership with The Tampa Tribune/TBO.com/News Channel 8 and Nestle Waters/Zephyrhills Natural Spring Water as well as a number of fine community-minded businesses.
The Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based association of businesses, organizations and individuals working together to preserve and continually enhance the quality of life in the community of Zephyrhills and surrounding area of East Pasco County. And All That Jazz by Allen Kanovsky

And All That JAZZ,  written by Allen Kanovsky and recited live,
Jazzonian Youth event 10/27/2012

I've been hanging out, listening to JAZZ since way back in the day.
In hip joints, clip joints and even get a grip joints.
Coast to coast, even abroad.
Europe, Asia, Central and Sur America.
They share a commonality where ever they may be
The acoustics suck, the bartenders should be driving trucks.
The only thing that keeps you coming back is the music,
and All That JAZZ

Talk "Dixie, "Swing", "Blues", "Bop" and "Fusion"
Saxophones, Trombones, Trumpets, Pianos Bass, Drums and Guitars
Duos, Trios and sometimes Quartets, Quintets, Sextets, Septets and even Octets
and All That JAZZ

Open that door, blindfolded, I mean worldwide, and you will be able to find the bar,
or tables or the men's room. They look alike and most of the time they smell alike.
You're not there for the ambiance. You're there for the music
and All That JAZZ

There's an exotic tone to a soprano sax, an almost sexy tone to the tenors and
trumpets jumping in with alacrity. The rhythm section, piano, bass, drums and guitar
sometimes match your heartbeat.

Where did it start? Who started it? When? Why?
No one cares, except historians. All of us are here for the music
and All That Jazz.

Pick one from column A - regardless of which you pick, you are always a winner w/ Al Kanovsky's recommendations

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 10/27/12

I actually feel good about certain dilemmas. Especially when it comes to choices of who am I going to listen to on a given night. Friday night proved tha JAZZ is alive and well in South Florida. Miami had the Nice/Miami JAZZ Festival and Boca Rotan had Melton Mustafa's CD release party at Art's Garage. Rick Katz opted for Miami, I chose Boca.

If you like to hear your JAZZ undisturbed by idle chatter, then the Garage is a good choice. There is an admission charge, with your choice of seating. The audience is generally mixed as far as age is concerned but leaning somewhat to the mature(meaning as old as my  kids). They are also "hip", remaining silent while there is music, applauding at the appropriate times and appreciative of the JAZZ genres from Dixie to Boogie Woogie, swing, be-bop and as illustrated Friday night a bit of avant-garde.

Melton looked and sounded great, although a little unhappy about his choice of mouthpieces for this evening. He fronted a band that was diverse, when it comes to age, as it possibly could be, ranging from Dolf Castellano(piano) age???? to Sean Divito(tenor sax) 18. Chad Bernstein(trombone) late 20's(a guess), Leon Foster-Thomas, a famed steel pan artist but playing drums tonight---probably near 40, Curtis Lundy(bass) mid-30s and Melton(trumpet),ageless. His brother Jesse Jones Jr. helped out a bit on alto and scat vocals. I don't know which is the eldest and won't ask because I'll never get the truth from either one.

The program consisted of mainly Melton's original compositions and charts. There were a couple of standards thrown in--ByeBye Blackbird, an impassioned avant-garde version of "Summertime" and also some popular be-bop riffs. My choice proved itself to be a good one. I was happy to see Melton looking (although a bit bushier) and sounding like Melton again.

Charlie Boyers party at BJB's Sunday afternoon 4-7 and most important MJC's Rent Party at the Stage Monday 8PM. As my kids would say---"Be there or be square"  Tappin' and Clappin' and missing her.
