Jazz history, stories, photographs and recipes from The Jazz Corner, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

From Lydia Inglett Publishing

The Jazz Corner on Hilton Head Island is recognized as one of the top music venues in the world today. A new hardcover book, The Jazz Corner Story shines a spotlight on this stylish musical club and comes with two live music discs inside. It benefits future musicians, as the proceeds go to the Junior Jazz Foundation to provide instruments and music lessons to promising young people.

Since 1999, The Jazz Corner has attracted music-loving audiences seven nights a week with its great live performances and mouth-watering menu. The club’s owners, noted jazz figure Bob Masteller (the son of hot jazz band leader Harold F. Masteller), and his wife, Lois, wanted to do their parts to discover and nurture future performers. In 2004, they formed the Junior Jazz Foundation, an independent fund-raising organization that purchases instruments and music lessons, and brings professional musicians to teach at Jazz Camps. Not only do these kids discover and strengthen their talents and skills, but jazz itself is enjoyed and preserved for future generations.

Without one legendary figure, The Jazz Corner, and popular music in general, would never have found its true place in our hearts. Back around 1910, a poor, skinny New Orleans kid named Daniel Louis Armstrong was given the gifts of a cornet and music lessons by the Colored Waifs Home. Satchmo’s talents sent songs such as “Dinah,” “Hello Dolly, and of course, “Wonderful World” soaring to the top of the charts. And, Satchmo’s rags-to-riches life experiences actually served in part as the inspiration for the Junior Jazz Foundation.

The Jazz Corner Story takes readers on a historical journey of American jazz, from its humble pre-Civil War origins through the 20th Century. Along the way, the genre’s many stylistic siblings, including Ragtime, the Blues, Big Band, Swing, Bebop and Rock ’n’ Roll, add to this rich cultural stew. Throughout, the book provides iconic photographs of Satchmo and other legends, such as Scott Joplin, Bix Biederbeck, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat “King” Cole, and Frank Sinatra. The author has also focused on today’s great Jazz Corner performers, including stories and images of all the bandleaders and their sidemen.

The Jazz Corner receives its due, with memorable tales and photographs of the great visiting musicians who’ve performed in the club. For discerning diners, this book features a menu’s worth of the club’s authentic Southern recipes, including appetizers, entrees and desserts. And to further entice readers, this book comes complete with two live jazz music discs recorded at The Jazz Corner containing a variety of top name bands.

The Jazz Corner Story, including the two live music discs, retails for  $35.00, and you can pick it up at The Jazz Corner located in Wexford shopping Center, Hwy. 278, Hilton Head, or order it online at www.starbooks.biz or www.amazon.com today. Great music, delicious recipes, descriptive stories, incredible photos and all to benefit a wonderful American foundation – now you can take The Jazz Corner experience home with you!
