Red White & Blues Festival in Delray Beach Florida Schedule Change Announced

From Boston's on the Beach's Management:
Ladies and Gents...

with very deep regrets, I will be unable to use the stage at the new Sandbar. We are still operating under a temporary CO, and that doesn't allow live entertainment. We thought we would be good to go in time for the Festival, but unfortunately, that's not going to happen.

We have done the best we can in re arranging some of the acts, but  have had to  cancel the following bands for this event:

IKO-IKO, SELWYN BIRCHWOOD,THE SHAKERS, JCB BLUES BAND, JOEL ZOSS TRIO, THE FLEETWOODS, THE NOUVEAUX HONKIES, AND ERNIE SOUTHERN..

We are making every effort to work with these acts to make it up to them, and look forward to working with them in the very near future...

I am attaching a revised schedule, please use as needed...and again, I am so sorry this had to work out this way...

thanks for all you do for us..

Sunshine Jazz Organization Presents SUNSHINE JAZZ at THE CALEB Featuring “Von Henry Express” Sunday July 8, 2012

Close your eyes and you’ll be taken back to the days when the royal ladies of jazz and blues – Ella, Sarah, Bessie and Billie – created the memorable recordings and performances that defined an entire era of music and American culture. The Sunshine Jazz Organization is proud to present multi-talented vocalist, Lavongia “Von” Henry, joined by her fabulous band mates as the Von Henry Express, on Sunday July 8th for the next installment of Sunshine Jazz at The Caleb, the SJO’s long running concert series.

Though relatively new on the performance scene, the South Florida native is blessed with abundant raw talent and has wisely spent the last ten years listening, learning and hanging out in the right places and with the right folks, including S. Florida Jazz Hall of Famer, Mel Dancy. She won rave reviews in the excellent play “Bessie’s Back in Town” (written and produced by Miamian, Barry Edelson), featured in the lead role as legendary Bessie Smith. An uncanny double, critics reported Von as “swinging brilliantly from raucous to weary blues, to old standards, to gospel and jazz”.

Von Henry Express features her frequent accompanist, veteran jazz guitarist-educator, Neil Bacher ( Ira Sullivan, Dolph and Tony Castellano, Stan Getz, Alice Day), and on July 8th will be joined by superb Miami musicians – bassist-educator Rick Doll (Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Red Rodney) and drummer Neil Rogers (Manfred Mann, Ronnie Scott’s house band).

Join China Valles and The SJO for another wonderful afternoon in celebration of South Florida’s amazing jazz talent. Sunday, July 8th, from 4:00pm-7:00pm at the Joseph Caleb Auditorium. Tickets $15.00 General Admission, Advance, Seniors & SJO Members; $10.00 groups of 10, and Students with ID; $20.00 at Door. Info: SJO (305)693-2594; Sunjazzorg@aol.com; Caleb Box Office (305)636-2350. Joseph Caleb Auditorium
5400 NW 22nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33142
.

The Sunshine Jazz Organization celebrates 25 years of Jazz Services!
SJO programs are produced with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

Smooth Jazz saxophonist Hulon releases “After Hours”

Florida’s own
releases second CD
features new jazz radio single,
“Sticky Trickuation”

JAZZ SAXOPHONIST HULON RELEASES SECOND CD  “AFTER HOURS”
FEATURES NEW RADIO SINGLE, “Sticky Trickuation
The urban jazz styling of Hulon has returned with his newest album, After Hours, which was released earlier this year  and is available on iTunes and Hulon’s website (www.hulon.com).

After the success of his debut album, First Impressions, Hulon’s newest album, After Hours, has combined passion and confidence creating Hulon’s best tracks to date. Hulon’s debut album spent 15 weeks on the Billboard Jazz Chart, peaking at #25, and featured the single “Sax on the Beach” which reached #16 on the Smooth Jazz.com Top 50 Indie Chart, and was featured on the noted jazz website AllAboutJazz.com, in addition to receiving national and international airplay at terrestrial and online radio.
The new 11 track set includes a vocal and instrumental version of the 1977 Heatwave classic “Always and Forever” and eight originals penned by Kashiwa that play to Hulon’s strengths as a soulful balladeer and a grooving R&B/funk player, with a few dashes of cool and swinging traditional jazz in the mix. Highlights include the sensual late night romance “You’re Beautiful,” the whimsical mid tempo light funk tune “Takin’ My Time,” the tropical chill of “Sticky Trickuation,” the sly, Pink Panther-esque “Speak Easy” (featuring shuffling drum, bass and finger snap rhythm) and the high octane horn-driven jam and first single from the new release, “Do You Feel Me.”

Hulon has collaborated once again with mentor, composer, producer and fellow saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa.   World renowned for his years with The Rippingtons, The Sax Pack and numerous hit solo albums over the past 20 years, Kashiwa again brought in some of contemporary jazz’s most powerful and dynamic players to take Hulon’s musical game on the new collection to the next level including Dave Hooper (drums), Allen Hinds (guitar), Melvin Davis (bass) and Bill Heller (keyboards) all of whom have played key roles on First Impressions.

Yet there’s lot more to Hulon’s dynamic emergence onto the urban jazz scene than simple chart stats and the support of some of the genre’s best players. At its heart, it’s the story of a musical dream long deferred and unique connections between the spiritual and emotional healing power of music and the physical healing that Dr. Hulon E. Crayton does as a rheumatologist and founder of The Arthritis and Infusion Center, which specializes in the treatment of Rheumatological diseases as well as sports related injuries. The title of one of the tracks on After Hours, the tropical flavored groove tune, “Second Opinion” is a playful ode to his longtime profession.

Soulfonic - Chicago Blues & Memphis Soul at Blue Tuesday #186 - Photos and vids of Florida Blues

Congratz to the Miami Heat for going 3 of 4 last night, and thanks to them for making it relatively short game so heads could turn back to stage at Boston's on the Beach to focus on what really matters...music. Billy Seward's new group, Soulfonic, has been out all over Florida recently and this was the first night I caught up with them for a full evening. The band plays a great mix of the blues and truly has one foot in Chicago and the other in Memphis. Their slow-burners, guitar leads, and a bunch of horn-backed bumpin' tunes are definitely not stuck in rut, and the each player moves from one to the other in easy transition. All this, mixed with Boston's well controlled sound, the fine people that were there, the great service and food & bev, made for one of the most relaxing nights of music I have had in awhile, and lot closer to the zone where the music can sink in and be enjoyed in total. Thanks to all for letting this happen! Here are some pics and vid clips for  you. Please note I only do clips, not full songs, because the intent here is give you a peek into the scene and motivate you to get out and be part of it...we need you.

Al, on the move...whilst tappin'-n-clappin' to jazz and blues

Submitted by Al Kanovsky, 6/15/12

Wednesday 6/13
It seems like every time I'm tappin' my feet and clappin' my hands it's 'cause there's a bandstand of MJC founders blowing. BJB's /Danny Burgers showcase featured Joe Donato. Now I don't want to boast and I am not ashamed to tell folks how old I really am, but I have heard musicians from all over the world play a wide variety of instruments of every kind. Joe gave me a whole new slant on rhythm instruments when he started playing a Poinsettia Seed Pod. Ira Sullivan plays lots of horns and some tropical rhythm stuff. Rick Harris plays anything he can get his hands on. Bluesmen Darrel Raines and Patrick Farinas do the same, but Poinsettia Seed Pod????---I couldn't believe my eyes---or ears. Along with Danny on drums we heard Matt Bonelli on bass and Brian Murphy at the piano---all founders and all fun. Adding to the great band, Joe had David Leon (sax) as a guest artist. David has just graduated H.S. and will continue his musical ed at the Frost School. Try to get a listen to this young and very talented young man.

Monday 6/11
Happy Birthday to Turk Mauro. and what a birthday party it was. Joining Turk was Danny Burger (drums), Billy Marcus (keys), Nicky Orta (bass guitar), Martin Hand (guitar). I had written Turk a birthday poem kidding him about "singing". My words did not discourage him one bit and he "sang" his way merrily into his 69th year. Lots of Turk's fans were there and I must admit he didn't let any of us down---Turk and I are committed to the tenet that clean living does not necessarily lead to long life. We all raise our glasses and wish him "Many Happy Returns". Turk is the Monday night feature at BJB's.
Sunday6/10
Flo and I are a bi-municipal couple. Meaning we travel back and forth from here to NY on a fairly regular basis. Our kids and grandchildren live in the metropolitan area and Flo's job is based there. It gives us a chance to get around the Apple in nothin'flat and 4/4 time. This Sunday we enjoyed JAZZ, but separately. Flo was in NY and went to an event at The Allen Room/Jazz at Lincoln Center. It was titled "Sweet & Low Down Family Matinee". The series of concerts is part of a musical education program for youngsters which is hosted by Michael Feinstein.

The afternoon featured New York's Michael Feinstein, our own Nicole Henry and the worlds Billy Strich. The band included Tedd Firth(music director/piano) Andy Farber(reeds) Tom Kennedy(bass) and Mark Mclean(drums). The program went from Gershwin to Sondheim including Feinstein doing a Grouch Marx song "Lydia Tattoo Lady". Nicole singing like she owned the town did "Night and Day", "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Time After Time" and others. The audience was applauding and shouting "Wow". There were also instructive talks by the artists and Michael encouraged the audience, including the kids, to dance or clap their hands to the music.  Flo said she would hate to lose Nicole at our favorite haunts in Florida but a room like this, is where Nicole belongs.  Glass that is four stories high, with the NY skyline as a backdrop.

1318 miles south of where Flo was, I attended the South Florida JAZZ Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Concert at the Caleb Center. The event was co-sponsored by the Sunshine JAZZ Organization. The setting may not have been as palatial as NY, but the JAZZ was just as enjoyable. Dolph Castellano and Mike Chioda made up the "house" band along with a drummer whose name I did not get. (I am sorry)The program was centered around "The Billy Marcus Quartet". The quartet in its entirety was being inducted into The Hall of Fame. Billy Marcus(piano) Eric Allison(woodwinds/vocals) Don Mosley(bass) and Gary Duchaine(drums). They hadn't played together for thirty years. Talk about a toe tappin', hand clappin' experience. The jam session was something else as well. Mel Dancy, Alice Day, Brenda Alford, a slight thing with a big voice Clarissa and Melton Mustafa. All of us know of Melton’s health problems. Here he was Sunday. Looking good (kona hura) and blowing as if Gabriel was on his shoulder. When Alice, Brenda and Melton concluded with "Amazing Grace" tears ran down my cheeks and my faith in the power of prayer was reaffirmed. The real Tracy Fields acted as MC. She is a great supporter of the JAZZ we all love so Whenever and if ever you get the chance to visit the "City" make sure you make arrangements to hear the JAZZ that they offer in this magnificent setting.
