The Duke Ellington Legacy Band
featuring
Edward Ellington

Wednesday Jan 11th, 2012 7:45 pm

Duke Ellington is known as one of the most legendary performers in the jazz world.  Not only an exceptional pianist and band leader, Ellington wrote a large quantity of music for the jazz repertoire.  His music will come to life again as the Duke Ellington Legacy Band performs a variety of the Duke’s music.

The Duke Ellington Legacy, initiated in 2003 by Ellington's grandchildren Edward Kennedy II, and his sister, Gaye Ellington, is dedicated to keeping Ellington's music alive and growing in the 21st century. Featuring top New York City-based musicians, the Ellington Legacy is a imaginative and spiritually enticing group. The Legacy is not a repertoire or ghost band. Pianist/chief arranger Norman Simmons, and saxophonist/arranger/band leader Virginia Mayhew create new interpretations of the music from the Ellington canon, both the familiar and the less-often heard. In addition to the Legacy's fresh take on the music, guitarist Edward Ellington tells stories from his time on the road with his grandfather.
