Graham Wood Drout of IKO IKO fame featured, again, in CITYLINK art article

Check out today's CITYLINK article on Graham!

Fresh Art: Drout
Posted on November 17, 2010 Art, Fresh Art, Local art
by Colleen Dougher

"Anyone who lives in South Florida and follows local music may know that Graham Wood Drout, the lead singer for roots-blues band Iko Iko, is a respected songwriter with a talent for storytelling. But some people may not know that he’s also a visual artist. “I have a degree in fine arts from FIU, and what happened was I met some knuckleheads who played blues at an art department party in Homestead back in ’78,” he explains."

Florida's Bear Creek Music Festival: Partying Like It's 1969 - Great review by Bill Meredith

From JazzTimes

"Bear Creek Music Festival: Partying Like It's 1969
Review of the sprawling funk, jam and jazz fest in Live Oak, Florida on November 10-14, 2010

Sunday was the dessert portion of the fest, as the Brian Stoltz Band (led by the Funky Meters guitarist) brought the Big Easy to an afternoon crowd at Uncle Charlie's Porch Stage. And New York City collective Lettuce, featuring Kininger, Krasno and Neal Evans, closed the Big IV Ampitheater with the historic additional horn section of Parker, Ellis and Wesley.

Already announced for next November's fifth annual Bear Creek is Medeski, Martin & Wood; John Scofield & Piety Street, The Funky Meters, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Lettuce, George Porter Jr., Jon Cleary, Pimps of Showtime, and Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood."

Florida's First Blues Trail Marker to be Presented to Bradfordville Blues Club November 20, 2010 - Bobby Rush Concert to Follow

Welcome to the Mississippi Blues Trail. This is an unforgettable journey into the land that spawned the single most important root source of modern popular music. Whether you're a die-hard blues fan or a casual traveler in search of an interesting trip, you'll find facts you didn't know, places you've never seen, and you'll gain a new appreciation for the area that gave birth to the blues.

Information regarding the upcoming out-of-state marker in Tallahassee, Florida.

This will be the 8th out-of-state marker for the Mississippi Blues Trail and is indeed a milestone for the state of Mississippi and the Mississippi Blues Commission.

The event will take place on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 5:00 PM (marker ceremony will take place with reception following, local entertainment will follow with a performance by Legendary Bluesman, Bobby Rush at 10:00 PM. Online or phone RSVP NECESSARY - Event will sell out!)

Location:

Bradfordville Blues Club
7152 Moses Lane
Tallahassee, FL, 32309
(850) 906-0766
bradfordvilleblues.com

The Mississippi Blues Trail markers tell stories through words and images of bluesmen and women and how the places where they lived and the times in which they existed–and continue to exist–influenced their music. The sites run the gamut from city streets to cotton fields, train depots to cemeteries, and clubs to churches. We have a lot to share, and it's just down the Mississippi Blues Trail.

South Florida JAZZ Season Opens w/ Gala & Chick Corea November 20, 2010

South Florida JAZZ 2010-11 Season Schedule
Highlighted by Chick Corea

South Florida JAZZ, coming off its most successful season, and the principal purveyors of modern jazz in the region since 1991, formally announces its new season schedule. All performances will be held at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd on the Nova Southeastern University campus in Davie. The focus of the organization remains steadfastly on presenting artists of national and international repute under the aegis of Artistic Director Ron Weber and gently guided by the world-acclaimed vibraphonist/educator Gary Burton. The artists who have performed for South Florida JAZZ over the years represent an absolute who’s-who of the jazz world. Weber and Burton think this lineup could be the strongest yet, which is a bold assertion following the outstanding artists of the recently concluded season.

Subscriptions and individual tickets to all concerts can be purchased from the Broward Center box office at 954-462-0222; toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, online at southfloridajazz.org or browardcenter.org.

Christian McBride & Inside Straight
The finest musicians to spring from the world of jazz have had an advantage when it comes to branching into other genres of music. Their mastery of composition, arranging and sight-reading coupled with their flair for improvisation and spontaneous creation make them possibly the most seasoned and adaptable musicians in the art. Grammy Award winner Christian McBride, chameleonic virtuoso of the acoustic and electric bass, stands tall at the top of this clique.

February 12, 2011 – 8:00 p.m.
Brazilian Trio with Guest Artist Vic Juris
Three of Brazil’s finest jazz exports, the dazzling pianist Helio Alves, superb bassist Nilson Matta, and the iconic drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, comprise this amazing trio. This is serious jazz by veteran masters of the American and Brazilian idioms. They are joined by frequent a collaborator, New York guitarist Vic Juris, well known in modern jazz circles.

March 12, 2011 – 8:00 p.m.
We Four: Celebrating John Coltrane
We Four is a new band of veteran New York jazz players, all of whom feel a special connection to John Coltrane. The band is composed of tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson, pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Jimmy Cobb. The repertoire will be a jazz lover’s delight from that hard-swinging era when so many standards and bluesy compositions were arranged and played so craftily. No band can do it better than this one.

April 9, 2011 – 8:00 p.m.
Amina Figarova Sextet
South Florida JAZZ will feature one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan and sophisticated artists, pianist Amina Figarova, with her international sextet. Here is your chance to discover a treasure and see her in her second South Florida JAZZ performance. The frontline of flute, saxophone and trumpet is renowned throughout the globe. The Amina Figarova Sextet appears courtesy of the Dutch government, which provides transportation to the United States for this engagement.

Martin Bejerano Trio
Cuban-American incendiary and creative pianist, Martin Bejerano, and his New York trio, with bassist Edward Perez and drummer Ludwig Alfonso, will premier Potential Energy Suite, a composition commissioned by Chamber Music America for a grant awarded to him by that organization. Mr. Bejerano is among the fastest rising stars in jazz. He is a fixture in the bands of Russell Malone and the legendary drummer Roy Haynes in addition to leading his own band and following academic pursuits both in New York and Miami.

June 11, 2011 – 8:00 p.m.
Kurt Elling
Chicago native Kurt Elling is the most accomplished male jazz singer extant. In a career spanning 14 years, 42-year-old Elling has risen to international prominence as a jazz artist and creative singer. An intellectual superman, he is a master of “vocalese” and scatting. Each of his eight albums for was nominated for Grammy Award and the most recent won this in 2010. He is a perennial critics poll-winner and his quartet tours the world, performing to critical acclaim in Europe, Asia, Canada, Israel, and Australia. This will be Mr. Elling’s fourth performance for South Florida JAZZ.
