GAINESVILLE, Fla.— The University of Florida is hosting a landmark event in jazz education this June. Gordon Goodwin is a 2006 Grammy Award Winner, 8-time Grammy nominee, and 3-time Emmy winner. New UF Jazz Director Scott Wilson and Gatorland Band Camps have been selected to host the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Jazz Camp June 20-26. The guest artists selected for the camp are the top musicians in the world today and play on your favorite movies scores, for the Grammy Awards, for the Golden Globe Awards, and for your favorite pop and jazz recordings.

Guest artists for the week include Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea), Wayne Bergeron (Maynard Ferguson), Sal Lozano (Stevie Wonder), Andy Martin (Louis Bellson), Bernie Dresel (Brian Setzer Orchestra), Scott Wilson (UNT One O’clock Lab Band), Brian Bromberg (Michael Brecker), and Gordon Goodwin. Please review their international credentials online at the jazz camp website (their bios represent the highest achievements in the field of music performance and jazz education).

There will be a special public appearance by the entire Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23 at the Curtis M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets will go on sale April 15 to affiliates (donors) and April 20 to the general public. Tickets are available on-line at http://performingarts.ufl.edu.

Music students between the ages of 13 and 18 are highly encouraged to attend this life-changing event. Gatorland Band Camps also accept applications from beginning level college musicians and all community college students. Educator tracks are available.

Six Youtube Jazz Scholarships will be awarded nationally from our online Jazz Scholarship Competition. Each student entering the competition will receive $50 of their tuition cost for entering their video online. The Big Phat Camp online website contains instructions on how to enter the scholarship competition and also links viewers to a tutorial video that explains how to upload their scholarship video to Youtube. Students can receive an additional $50 off tuition costs for early registration (ending June 1). This is a total of $100 savings on tuition costs available to all students.

Young musicians and educators are urged to take advantage of this life-changing opportunity to work one-on-one with some of the world’s finest musicians. Likewise, this jazz camp will feature more Grammy Artists then perhaps any other jazz camp in the nation. For this, and many other reasons, it is our hope that everyone involved embraces this opportunity to encourage all musicians to attend so we can build upon the annual success of the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Camp at the University of Florida and keep this opportunity here in Florida for many years to come.
