April is Jazz Appreciation Month

April is "Jazz Appreciation Month" and Gold Coast Jazz Society is celebrating by providing a number of jazz education performances for local school children.

Members of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band will be performing "The Facets of Jazz" for 5th grade through high school students at the Broward Center's Amaturo Theater as a part of the school system's SEAS (Student Enrichment in Arts & Science) Program. Then, it's on to several local elementary schools for performances of the Albert Bishop "Jazz is Elementary" program for students in grade K through 5.

The JazzSLAM program, another jazz education program which focuses on helping students with FCAT skills, is also on the road, with performances at several elementary schools in Broward. Lastly, "Jazz for Wee Ones," a program which introduces jazz, music and musical instruments to smaller children, will take place in four local after-school child care locations in the area with the help of Family Central.

Funding support provided by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, the Broward Cultural Council, NEA Recovery Grant, Broward Public Schools, FAB!, Community Foundation of Broward, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, BankAtlantic Foundation, Music Performance Fund, Children's Opportunity Group and the David & Francie Horvitz Family Foundation.
