TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA BLUES CLUB RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

Blues Club: Bradfordville Blues Club, Tallahassee, Florida
It may be the coolest juke joint experience outside Mississippi. Drive down a secluded dirt road through fields of cornstalks and massive Spanish-moss-covered live oaks until you see the glowing, cinder block juke in the distance and you've found it. Featuring live blues every Friday and Saturday night since 1964, the BBC has hosted blues royalty like Bobby "Blue" Bland, Bobby Rush, Jimmy Rogers, Pinetop Perkins, Little Milton, James Cotton, Nappy Brown, Ms. Lavelle White, Kenny Neal, Big Jack Johnson, E.C. Scott, Maria Muldaur, Son Seals, and a host of others. When the music gets too hot, you can always go outside to join the crowd surrounding the roaring bonfire (a rarity in today's world) or listen to the blues from the bonfire stage. New owners Gary and Kim Anton took over the club eight years ago and have worked hard to change little.

Statement from Gary and Kim Anton, owners of the Bradfordville Blues Club:

"Hey folks-
The Blues Foundation announced that the Bradfordville Blues Club has received the 2010 Keeping the Blues Alive Award in the blues clubs category! Wow! What an honor. It is a tribute to the club's "irregulars", customers, volunteers, benefactors, blues lovers, bands, agents and writers who have supported the BBC over the years. We've always known that the BBC is special and it is humbling to know that others feel that way, too. Thank you for helping keep the BBC alive so we can keep the Blues Alive and Live!

WOW!"

This is the second time in less than ten years that a Florida club has brought home the award. Skipper's Smokehouse (aka Skipperdome) was recognized in 2001 for their contribution to the blues.

Here is the Blues Foundation's description of the KBA Award:

Each year, The Blues Foundation presents the Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Blues world.

The Blues Foundation will present the 2010 KBA Awards during a recognition brunch Saturday, January 23, 2010, at the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. The KBA ceremony will be part of the International Blues Challenge (IBC) weekend of events. For complete information about the 2010 International Blues Challenge weekend click here.

Unlike the Blues Music Awards, the award recognizing the past year's best in recordings and performance voted on by thousands of The Blues Foundation's members, the KBAs are awarded to non-performers strictly on the basis of merit by a select panel of Blues professionals. Noted educator, author, journalist, and KBA Chairman Art Tipaldi notes "The KBA may be awarded for the recipient's work in the past year but most often reflects a lifetime of work; we don't view the recipient as the winner of a 'best of the year' category. Consistent with this philosophy, the committee generally refrains from awarding the KBA to an individual or organization more than once. Rather, we select a new deserving winner each year, except in rare cases when a significant period of time has elapsed since the first award."
