The Carlisle Floyd House at Millstone Institute

Carlisle Floyd, one of the most celebrated of American opera composers, wrote his world famous opera, Susannah, in a small house in Tallahassee in the mid-1950’s, during his time on the faculty of the School of Music at FSU. With the recent expansion of the FSU campus, the house was in danger of being demolished. Through a generous donation, the house was moved from its original location near FSU to the peaceful setting of the Millstone Institute. Upon restoration, the Floyd House will be used as a creative retreat by composers, musicians, scholars and artists. Millstone is holding a benefit jazz concert and reception to help raise the $25,000 that it will take to fix up the Floyd House.
