June 13, 2009 - 8:00 p.m. - South Florida JAZZ welcomes An all-star band of New York heavyweights, The NUTTREE QUARTET, making its North American debut after two successful European tours and two acclaimed CDs.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is excited to feature a unique band comprised of modern jazz luminaries, featuring guitar icon John Abercrombie, saxophonist Bill Evans, Hammond B3 organist Gary Versace, and drummer-leader Adam Nussbaum.
This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314. Tickets are $35 ($25 for South Florida JAZZ members and $10 for students at any level with I.D.) and may be purchased from the AutoNation Box Office by calling 954.462.0222 in Broward County; also toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, as well as online at www.southfloridajazz.org, the presenting organization’s official Website.

Nuttree is a quartet comprised of some of New York’s best veteran players, all of whom are in such demand that it hard to put them on the same date. Under the direction of drummer Adam Nussbaum, the group features master players on every instrument.

Best known of the players is guitarist John Abercrombie, who formed binding associations with the Brecker Brothers, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland and other artists on the ECM label, in addition to his friend, Adam Nussbaum. John’s style is infused with the traditions of Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt, retaining his fondness for jazz standards, while incorporating the evolving technology.

Tenor and soprano saxophonist Bill Evans was introduced worldwide in a three-year stint with Miles Davis in the early 1980s. Bill is a dynamic player, equally comfortable in multiple genres from straightahead jazz to fusion, funk and beyond. His current efforts include the Soulbop band he co-leads with Randy Brecker, and his Soulgrass band that is breaking several additional barriers. He is without question among the best and most creative saxophonists on the jazz scene. Because he has been so well received in Europe, American audiences rarely get to see this supremely talented player.

Gary Versace took his masters degree from Eastman School of Music, moved to NYC in 2002 and rapidly became one of the busiest and most versatile musicians on the scene as a pianist, organist, and also an accordionist (Maria Schneider’s orchestra). He is in demand by a number of bandleaders including Adam Nussbaum, John Abercrombie, John Scofield, Matt Wilson, and many others. His style is distinctly contemporary and pianistic, with clear articulation and a deft touch to his provocative harmonic texturing.

Leader Adam Nussbaum has enjoyed a cutting-edge a drumming career playing with John Scofield, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Eliane Elias, Dave Liebman, and even the Gil Evans Orchestra. He has long been associated with John Abercrombie. South Florida JAZZ audiences likely recall a memorable quartet performance at Hollywood’s Anne Kolb Nature Center. Adam is impish at the microphone and explosive on the drums.

The Nuttree Quartet brings a fresh sound and feel to the historic repertoire that most serious listeners associate with jazz – The Real Book.

Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.
