Duke Ellington: Jazz Playin’ ManGold Coast Jazz Society Hits the Road with Jazz Education Program

Fort Lauderdale, FL - Duke Ellington was one of the most influential musicians in jazz. He brought jazz to a new level of class and sophistication and introduced millions to the great American music. To educate young people about the jazz legend, the Gold Coast Jazz Society will present “Duke Ellington: Jazz Playin’ Man ” to students from Broward County public schools. Local actor, Larry Robinson, will portray the “Duke” and members of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band will perform Ellington’s music in this jazz education production.

Performances of “Duke Ellington: Jazz Playin’ Man” will occur on April 13 at the Amaturo Theater as a part of the Broward County School’s SEAS program (Student Enrichment in Arts & Science). In-school performances for students will take place at North Lauderdale Elementary School on April 15, Harbordale Elementary School on April 16 and Westwood Heights Elementary School on April 17. All performances are provided free of charge.

Each April the Gold Coast Jazz Society provides jazz education performances for students to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month.

Edward "Duke" Kennedy Ellington was born on April 29, 1899. He was a gifted pianist but gained notariety as a band leader and composer. His orchestra played regularly at the Cotton Club, the famous jazz club in Harlem. A prolific jazz composer, Ellington wrote the Black and Tan Fantasy and jazz standards including Mood Indigo, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) and Take the 'A' Train and "Satin Doll."

The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and presentation of jazz music. For further information about the Gold Coast Jazz Society, call 954-524-0805 or online at http://www.goldcoastjazz.org/.
